1 Bulletin Monday 13th October 2014 I S S U E N O / 1 5 Meets weekly at Benito s Restaurant 1196 Nepean Highway, Mount Eliza pm for 6.30pm start TOM S TALES Hello Rotarians October is Vocational Service Month It was good to hear from our District Governor Charlie last week who reminded us that Rotary is a world organisation which is apolitical and non religious. He stressed also that as Rotarians we tend to hide our light under a bushel and we should promote our projects and Rotary more. He also brought us up to date on Polio plus and the fact that it is going well with some different strategies which with luck will be successful. The work done so far is amazing in having saved millions of children from the scourge of polio in the last thirty years and it is frustrating to be so close to removing polio from the world completely It was a very busy week for us last week with Lets Go Crusin and the car parking at the Archibald Prise and the working bee at the Portsea Camp, big thank you to all our members who helped out Tonight is our combined membership and Pride of Workmanship award night and I welcome all who have not been to a Rotary meeting please ask questions of any Rotarian about Rotary and to our members I m sure you will seek out and make most welcome our guests tonight. The Pride of Workmanship Program enables managers in our society to help employees achieve the goal of job satisfaction, and publicly recognize them for their efforts. Participating businesses promote the Pride of Workmanship theme of "Do it once- do it well" throughout their organization and nominate employees worthy of recognition, not only within the organization, but the wider community. Nominees of the Pride of Workmanship Program are presented with a trophy in recognition of their achievements. Meeting Notes-Bill Cummins Notes of Rotary Club of Mt Martha Meeting President Tom welcomed Rotarians, their partners, visiting Rotarian (Mt.Eliza) Lara Barrett, Phyllis Scales ( David Piper's guest) and District Governor Charlie Speirs and his wife Janne. Charlie was making his official visit to the Club. Announcements : John Marshall reminded all of the Lets go Cruisin bbq tomorrow night and volunteers for the working bee at Portsea Camp on Saturday and Sunday this week. Rob Davies handed out and spoke about the next play "Whose Wives Are They Anyway" being undertaken by his group. This will be held at the Mt Eliza Community Centre.in late November early December. Please contact Rob for further information and bookings. Maybe we could make up a table? Dee Tozer called for more past copies of the RDU magazine and reminded us of the Membership Information night next Monday. The meeting is 6.30pm for a 7.00 pm start. please RSVP the names of guests by noon Friday. Greg Buchanan handed out a roster sheet for the Archibald parking on Wednesday. Two persons required per shift. Five shifts in total. Acting Sergeant Greg : Many fines handed out, amongst which were : Roger Skipsey spotted getting a haircut, David Crane had a badge mix up, all Rabbitohs supporters, Barrie Sweeney for an All Blacks loss, Rob Davies for an Argentinian win, Yvonne Marks dressed for church- wrong day, last Saturday's sausage sizzle members for leaving the sign out, all the PDG's and President Tom for breaking the handle of his shovel. Bill Cummins fined,on behalf of the Club, for gaining a Presidents Citation for our efforts last year. Roger Annear, the swindler : Once again we failed to get a winner with the stakes standing at $275. President Tom, Greg Buchanan, David Piper and John Marshall were the unsuccessful members. With only a hand full of cards left, surely it will go off next week.

3 DG Charlie Spiers TONIGHTS Visit MEETING to Our AND DIARY Club DATES President Tom then introduced DG Charlie Spiers. Charlie began his presentation with the words "get involved" and "come along and play". Which is very much in line with this year's Rotary Theme of "LIGHT UP ROTARY". It is more than a theme, it is how we live in Rotary, think in Rotary, how we feel and how we work. It is how we make a difference every day throughout the world. We are part of an International Community but we fail to capitalize on all the good works that are being carried out throughout the World by Rotary. We must tell the World of the positive things being achieved instead of always having the negatives reported. A good example is Polio Plus there were 200 polio cases reported 2012 " " " " " " 2013 " " 400 " " " 2014 " " 209 " " " Of the 209, 174 are in Pakistan and recently the WHO/Rotary had Imran Khan, ex Pakistan cricket captain and current leading politician and "cult figure", visit the infected area of Pakistan and meet with tribal chiefs in an attempt to convince them that the vaccine for the treatment of Polio is okay in Sharia Law. we can only hope they see it that way. It is planned to vaccinate between thousand in that area. Charlie finished by encouraging us to find new members, help or start up a Rotoract Club or another Club within our own for younger members. The RC of Doncaster recently started a Club for up to 30 year olds within their Club. It does it's own thing, meets when it needs to, dispensed with all of therotary protocol, do their own fund raising but join the main Club for major projects and a meeting once a month. WE CAME TO PLAY- WE COME TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. DG s Wife Janne Told us about her great project in Bangladesh DG's wife's project: Janne spoke to us about her project for the year, which is Operation Cleft. Janne's interest in Bangladesh, which is where this project is being conducted, goes back to when her father spent some time in Bangladesh and came to care for the people a lot. In 2005, the RC of Box Hill Central agreed to fund a pilot program of 60 cleft repair operations. With the great success and the simplicity of the trial they decided to make Operation Cleft a Rotary International project. A $250 operation, would allow an underprivileged child to feed themself, speak properly, go to school and gain employment. It is estimated that there are 300,000 Bangladeshis born each year with a cleft lip or pallet. The operations are undertaken by Bangladeshi Plastic Surgeons.

HUANG PRESIDENT In October 1914, Jonas Salk was born a man who would change world history by inventing the first effective vaccine against polio. When the vaccine was introduced in the United States in the 1950s, polls indicated that polio was one of the nation's two greatest fears, second only to the fear of atomic war. And with good reason: In the 1952 U.S. polio epidemic, 58,000 cases were reported, with 3,145 deaths and 21,269 instances of permanent, disabling paralysis. Globally, polio paralyzed or killed up to half a million people every year. Soon after the Salk vaccine was created, Albert Sabin developed an oral version, allowing tremendous numbers of children to be immunized quickly, safely, and inexpensively. In 1985, Rotary's Polio Plus program was born, with a simple goal: to immunize every child under age five against this crippling disease. Thanks in large part to the initial success of Polio Plus, in 1988 the 166 member states of the World Health Assembly unanimously set the goal of global polio eradication. At the time, the idea was breathtakingly ambitious, and many called it impossible. Today, we are closer to this goal than ever before, with only a few hundred cases of polio reported per year, and just three remaining endemic countries. We are on track to achieve full eradication by 2018 if we can keep up the momentum that has brought us this far. And this month, we will mark World Polio Day on 24 October, and celebrate the 100th anniversary of Dr. Salk's birth. I ask you all to Light Up Rotary this month by doing whatever you can to shine a spotlight on our efforts to eradicate polio. 7 TONIGHTS MEETING AND DIARY DATES October is Vocational Service Month When men and women join a Rotary Club, they do so as a representative of their vocational classification their particular business or profession. Rotarians have the dual responsibility of representing their vocation within the Club and exemplifying the ideals of Rotary within the workplace. Vocational Service calls every Rotarian to: Aspire to high ethical standards in their occupation Recognise the worthiness of all useful occupations Contribute their vocational talents to the problems and needs of society. Ethics One of the central goals of Vocational Service is to promote and advance Rotary s high ethical standards. Two useful tools Rotarians have to assess these standards are The Four-Way Test and the Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions Vocational Service Month Every October, Rotarians are encouraged to focus their attention on vocational service. Vocational Service Month is an opportunity to begin year-long vocational service activities, ranging from Rotary discussions to awards to community projects. At our meeting on Monday night Pride of Workmanship awards will be again awarded as a part of recognizing the above qualities in the work place. *********************************************************************************************** * Recent Events Lets Go Cuisin last Tuesday night, another Successful fun night, raising funds to assist the community. Archibald Art Display Parking - Another opportunity to have an involvement in a local activity and raise some money to use in the Community. One of our esteemed members at work.
