Bulletin Monday 24th August 2015 Meets weekly at Benito s Restaurant 1196 Nepean Highway, Mount Eliza I S S U E N O / pm for 6.30pm start August is Membership & Extension Month Hello Rotarians Hello again Rotarians, a big thank you to PP Greg for his presentation last week at short notice, as usual it was great to hear from one of our own. Greg certainly has had an interesting and varied life, his insight into the recent fires at Newport was terrific, thanks again Greg. This week we have Grahame Gordon talking about membership as this is membership month. Grahame has been very successful in gaining and retaining new members at his own club. I would like to remind members of our two upcoming guest speakers Dr. Patrick Tolan on this 31st August, speaking on mental health, DG Merv will also be in attendance on this evening along with Rotary International Director Guiller, on the 7th September we have Sue Williams CEO of Peninsular Health Sue recently spoke at the International Woman s Breakfast and was very well received. An invitation is extended to our partners for both of these speakers. I will send a sheet around at Monday s Meeting. Yours in Rotary D A VID S DRIVEL David Wheeler,Vice President Rotary Club of Mount Martha PO Box 342, Mornington 3931 District Governor 9820: Merv Williams Assistant Governor 9820: Lynda Morris President: Peter Warren peter.warren5@bigpond.com Secretary: Barrie Sweeney lorbar@internode.on.net Apologies and Guests: Barrie Sweeney by Monday midday at the latest lorbar@internode.on.net Bulletin Editor: Colin Stokes Contributions by midday Thursday please chstokes@optusnet.com.au Website Editor: Colin Stokes chstokes@optusnet.com.au

LAST MEETING AT BENITO S RESTAURANT Members present: 22 Apologies : Tom Barrett, Bernard Butler, Byron Groves, Martin Lowe, Pat and Martin Reid, Peter Warren LOA : (PDG) David Crane, Bill Cummins, Adrian Davis, Wayne Norris, Justin Orr,Dee Tozer NOTES FROM RCMM CLUB MEETING MONDAY 10th AUGUST Minutes taken by Peter Rawlings Sergeant Paul introduced Vice President David Wheeler, who was filling in for President Peter for the next fortnight. David then welcomed all members including Rotarian, Greg Buchanan as tonight s guest speaker. David Piper advised the Club that 22 members had paid their subscriptions with a few still outstanding. Rob Marks advised that there is a potential World President from a Melbourne bayside based Rotary Club. Colin Stokes thanked Jonathan Mayne and Peter Rawlings for helping out with the Bulletin during his leave. David Wheeler announced that the speaker for the 31 st August is Dr. Patrick Tolan, speaking on TMS, with a focus on mental health. The Club also has Sue Williams, CEO at Peninsula Health as an upcoming guest speaker. Freda Bowie Horoway spoke on the Ageing Well Expo to be held at New Peninsula. (See details further on in this newsletter.) A letter was received from the local Pistol Club thanking our Club for the donation of chairs. The meeting was then handed over to Chairman, Roger who introduced Sergeant Paul Clark. There were many and various fines with Barrie Sweeney copping a slap and a sledge for New Zealand s efforts in the Netball World Cup and the Rugby. Jonathan Mayne again received a fine for his flash jacket whilst Bill Mackenzie scored a fine for his tartan scarf. Roger Skipsey did well with his correct answer of 500,000 attendees at the first Woodstock. Roger then officiated at the swindle, with Peter Rawlings winning $230, leaving the Club all the more poorer.

LAST MEETING AT BENITO S RESTAURANT Chairman, Roger then introduced Greg Buchanan who welcomed Greg as the biggest crane owner in Moorooduc! Born and bred in Mornington in 1957, Greg took us through part of his early life which saw him educated locally at Vale Street Primary and then on to Dromana Tech. As a boiler maker and mechanic in his younger days, Greg went on to do an apprenticeship in Sandringham for four years before becoming a draftsman. In the late 1970 s he then travelled with two friends around Australia, taking out the back seat of the car to provide room enough for a fridge and their bikes. Arriving in Darwin on a Friday, by the Monday all three had jobs where they stayed for some eight months. Having worked in the local quarries and continuing with his mechanic, boiler making and engineering feats, Greg diversified further into the crane business. He now has four cranes which he and son James operate locally and further afield. Buying their current property in Moorooduc in 1990, Greg and Melanie were married the same year and have three wonderful children, James, Sarah and Alex, of whom they are justifiably proud. Joining Rotary in mid-1985, Greg is a Past President of our Club, reflecting so positively on his Rotary life and the many friendships he has made over the years. Not only taking us down memory lane, Greg gave us a good insight into his background and he was duly thanked by Roger before passing the meeting back to VP, David Wheeler. *********************************************************************************** Friday, 24th July 2015 marked a significant day in Rotary's campaign to rid the world of polio. It is one year since the last case of polio was reported in Nigeria. Often the final steps are the hardest but Rotarians around the world are determined to see this through.

TONIGHTS MEETING AND DIARY DATES

August is TONIGHTS membership MEETING AND and DIARY Extension DATES Month Is retaining existing members just as important as inducting new members The answer is obviously yes. In looking at the somewhat static membership of RI over the past years it is a question worth asking. Although over 1 million new members have joined Rotary over that period the total membership of RI has remained around the 1.2 million mark. On that basis 1 million have left, the vast majority through choice, so why is that? Read more... This article is from the District newsletter Follow the link above. This is relevant reading for tonights speaker.

TONIGHTS MEETING AND DIARY DATES The Lawyer One afternoon a lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the road-side eating grass. Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate. He asked one man, "Why are you eating grass?" "We don't have any money for food," the poor man replied. "We have to eat grass." "Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll feed you," the lawyer said. "But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree." "Bring them along," the lawyer replied. Turning to the other poor man he stated, "You may come with us, also." The second man, in a pitiful voice, then said, "But sir, I also have a wife and six children with me!" "Bring them all as well," the lawyer answered. They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine was. Once under way, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, "Sir, you are too kind Thank you for taking all of us with you." The lawyer replied, "Glad to do it. You'll really love my place. The grass is almost a foot high." Thanks John Marshall Just a reminder about the Article on Organ Donation in Rotary Down Under and in our Bulletin a few weeks ago. Over 1100 Rotary Clubs across Australia are urging families to have the chat about organ and tissue donation with their loved ones and register their donation decisions during DonateLife Week. Rotary s participation in DonateLife Week 2015 was prompted by the story of Jack Wilson, the grandson of one of the 21 Rotary District Governors in Australia. Read more...
