3 Rotary Club of Mount Martha SATELLITE ROTARY CLUB GUIDELINES BACKGROUND At the 2013 Council on Legislation provision was made for the formation of satellite clubs and these Guidelines are prepared for the purpose of assisting clubs in the District to understand the provisions and implement action to form satellite clubs if so desired. What is a satellite club? A satellite club is defined as a potential club whose members shall also be members of the sponsor club. It is likely that the satellite club would not initially have the required number of members to charter a club and the purpose of conducting the satellite club is to give the potential club time to obtain the required number of members for chartering. Thus there needs to be a sponsor club which forms the satellite club in the same locality as the sponsor club, or in the surrounding area. The name of the satellite club shall be the Rotary Satellite Club of (insert name which does not have to mirror exactly the name of the sponsoring club but needs to be an adjoining location, eg. Eynesbury for Melton Valley RC). The members of the satellite club shall also be members of the sponsor club until such time as the satellite club shall be admitted into membership of RI as a Rotary Club. Satellite clubs shall hold regular weekly meetings just like any Rotary club at a time and day decided by its members. Governance of a Satellite Club! The sponsor club shall provide such general oversight and support to a satellite club as is deemed appropriate by the sponsor club s board. There shall be a satellite club board comprising a chairman, immediate past chairman, chairman-elect, secretary and treasurer as well four to six other members of the club. The board shall be elected annually by the satellite club members. The satellite board shall be responsible for the day to day organization and management of the satellite club and its activities in accordance with rotary rules, requirements, policies, aims and objectives under the guidance of the sponsor club. It shall have no authority within, or over, the sponsor club. A satellite club shall annually submit to the president and board of the sponsor club a report on its membership, its activities and programs, accompanied by a financial 2 statement and audited accounts for inclusion in the sponsor club s reports for its annual general meeting and such other reports as may, from time to time, be required by the sponsor club. The satellite club shall be subject to the sponsor club s rules and bylaws. District 9820 is keen to support any existing club that wishes to become involved with the Rotary Satellite Club initiative.

5 Rotary Club of Mount Martha Commentary on History of Rotary by Esther Murray Recently I put up my hand up to do a piece on Rotary from the wonderful book Doing good in the World Rotary Foundation first 100 years. I felt I couldn t put the book down once I opened it as it is full of stories of great people, ordinary men and women, who together, across the world, have made so many people have great life changing moments. One item in particular I wanted to share and this is straight from the book: Whilst World War Two was raging, Rotarians in London staged a conference and invited highranking ministers and government officials who were living in exile in England. Improbable as it may have seemed to be planning for peace while bombs were raining down on the British capital, it was nevertheless Rotary s goal to plan cultural and educational exchange that would foster understanding between people of different nations once the fighting had ended. Called CAME the Council of Allied Ministers of Education this group laid the groundwork for what would become the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation or UNESCO. In 2011 The Rotary Foundation formed a scholarship partnership with UNESCO to provide up to 8 scholarships annually for the study of water and sanitation at UNESCO prestigious Institute for Water Education in the Netherlands, in 2013 the number of scholarships increased to 16. This is a fantastic effort and what a great outcome in such difficult times. Proud to be a Rotarian, Esther Murray Thank you from Mornington Secondary College Principal, Linda Stanton for funds provided by RCMM for the Recipe for Success program Thankyou Peter, and please thank the President Tom Goulding and the Rotary Club of Mt. Martha. This generous donation will allow the Recipe for Success program to continue until the end of the year. It is an extremely valuable program for many of our students and families. Our students are becoming skilled at making nutritious meals and allows their families to eat a healthy meal one day of the week. Your support is very much appreciated. 6 Recipe for Success Cooking sessions for at risk students Outline Mornington Secondary College runs an afterschool program that uses food as a vehicle to support and engage at-risk students to develop life skills and confidence in the cooking of food for themselves and their families. The program was developed and is currently run by the Food Technology coordinator and teacher. The program is supported by the Adolescent Health Nurse, Department of Education and Training staff member Suzie Adsett and MSC teacher George Wardle. We are also working in strong collaboration with 3 volunteers from the Mornington community. Our Aim To foster an environment that provides an opportunity for at-risk students to experience a sense of achievement and pride, to build social skills and engage positively in school life. To provide positive role models for students To develop strong ties with community. Purpose To help at-risk students stay engaged in school life. To empower students to develop positive relationships with their peers, teachers and community members. To help students foster positive relationships with family members. To provide students the opportunity to learn valuable life skills. To empower students to make a positive contribution to their family life by taking products/meals home. To offer students an after school activity. To allow students the opportunity to develop a sense of achievement and pride. To encourage students to realise their talents/strengths, develop goal setting skills, foster self-worth. How we do this: We run the program in the MSC kitchens on Tuesday afternoons, 3pm 4.30 pm. Dishes cooked are simple to allow for different skill levels. Dishes cooked cater for allergies, intolerances, food preferences. Dishes are cooked in quantities suited to the student s family size. Dishes are cost effective - to ensure students can replicate the dish at home. The program currently has 8 attending students, 2 teachers, 1 wellbeing staff member and 3 community volunteers (required funds = $150/week).
