(Birmingham, Ala.) to conduct a study entitled Comparison of the Efficacy of Two Different Surgical Approaches to Increase Peri-implant Mucosa Thickness: A Randomized Clinical Trial. The purpose of this non-inferiority trial is to determine the clinical efficacy of a soft tissue allograft (i.e., acellular human dermal matrix) in the augmentation of facial mucosa thickness around an implant as compared to an autologous subepithelial connective tissue graft in human adults. Dr. Christopher Hutton (left, below), a secondyear resident in the Department of Periodontics, is the main co-investigator; he will use the results of this clinical trial to complete the requirements to obtain his Master of Science degree. Other co-investigators include Dr. Georgia Johnson, DEO, Department of Periodontics; Dr. Kelsey Tengan, firstyear resident, Department of Periodontics; Dr. Chris Barwacz, Department of Prosthodontics and Dows Institute for Research; and Dr. Veerasathpurush Allareddy, Department of Orthodontics. This study is currently ongoing and is actively recruiting patients. Mr. Richard Barwacz is the study coordinator. Dr. Axel Ruprecht to Serve on AAE/AAOMR Special Committee Dr. Axel Ruprecht, Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, will serve as a member on the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) and American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology s Joint Special Committee to Review and Revise the Position Statement on the Use of Cone-Beam-Computed Tomography (CBCT) in Endodontics. Dr. Ruprecht and other committee members will revise and update the AAE 2010 position paper on the use of CBCT in regard to ionizing radiation as well as clinical recommendations, anatomical considerations and appropriate use of CBCT. The committee will also identify clinical situations in which the use of CBCT is valuable for endodontists.

Dr. Adeyemo presented a seminar in the Carver Biomedical Research Building on January 15 entitled, Genetics of Complex Disease: Insights from Multiple Populations. Dr. Adeyemo is a key investigator in the Africa America Diabetes Mellitus Study (AADM), the Howard University Family Study (HUFS). His current research includes the genetic epidemiology of hypertension in African Americans, the genetic epidemiology of podoconiosis (nonfilarial elephantiasis) in Ethiopia and the genetic epidemiology of type 2 diabetes in West Africa. He was fortunate to hear Martin Luther King, Jr. speak several times. On August 27, 1963, George and a friend attended the march on Washington. Before King s speech, the young men were asked if they would help provide security for King and they said yes. After Dr. King gave his I have a dream speech, George, who was standing next to him, asked if he could have King s copy of his speech. He still has King s copy today. Professor Brennan s research interests include the design, fabrication and characterization of tissue constructs with an emphasis on biointerfaces, which mimic natural biosurfaces. Dr. Brennan has published over 100 refereed articles, book chapters and abstracts. He is also an inventor and co-investor on six U.S. patents.
