Page 2 Rich Tack Receives College of Dentistry Ambassador Award For over five years, Rich Tack, Ed Media coordinator, has provided excellent assistance to the College of Dentistry. In serving faculty, staff, and students, he goes above and beyond the call of duty and often donates personal time to meet the needs of the college. Rich provides invaluable expertise, substantive knowledge and assistance, and excellent problem-solving skills. He is an exemplary teacher and adviser on media technology. Rich is dependable, meticulous, competent, kind, thoughtful, and has a good sense of humor. He is a true team player and makes the college a more professional institution and a happier workplace. If anyone has the Midas Touch, it is Rich Tack. Everything he touches at the college turns to gold: a PowerPoint, sound, lighting, etc. The College of Dentistry is fortunate to have Rich. He is a great asset to the institution and is most deserving of the honor of Ambassador for the College of Dentistry. Sean Kelley, manager of Ed Media, reports that the award celebration took place on May 7 at the Hamburg Inn. Attendees included Dean David Johnsen and Ed Media staff: Sean, Pat Conrad, JoAnne Montgomery, Eric Corbin, Rich Tack and his wife, Rhonda. (Kasey Befeler was unable to attend.) As the honoree, Rich enjoyed a jumbo cheeseburger and strawberry milk shake, both of which he pronounced of excellent quality. Dr. Satheesh Elangovan Becomes Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology Congratulations to Dr. Satheesh Elangovan, who is now a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology! A diplomate is a periodontist who has made significant achievements beyond the mandatory educational requirements of the specialty and who is certified by the American Board of Periodontology. This includes successfully completing a written, qualifying examination followed by a comprehensive oral examination covering all phases of periodontal therapy, including dental implants. One hundred eighty-seven candidates participated in the oral examination, which was held May 2012 in Dallas, and 152 were successful, with a pass rate of 81 percent. Dr. Richard Walton is President Elect of the UIRA Richard Walton, professor emeritus in the Department of Endodontics, is now president elect of the University of Iowa Retiree s Association (UIRA). His major responsibility will be to chair the organization s program committee, which selects and manages monthly programs during the academic year.

Dr. Kim Brogden Receives the 2012 AAP Teaching and Mentoring Award at Iowa Dr. Kim Brogden, Department of Periodontics and Dows, is the recipient of the 2012 American Academy of Periodontology Teaching and Mentoring Award at the University of Iowa. This award is given to an educator who has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in providing education and who relays that enthusiasm to students. Professor Brogden has mentored numerous graduate students and dental students in their research projects, many of which have won awards in local, regional and national competitions. In addition, he enriches the periodontics program through the scientific perspectives he brings to literature reviews and seminars. Dr. Brogden received his awards at the Department of Periodontics Recognition Luncheon, which was held June 5, 2012. Drs. Clark Stanford and Julie Holloway Attend Prosthodontics Workshop Clark Stanford, associate dean for research, and Dr. Julie Holloway, head of the Department of Prosthodontics, attended the 2012 International Journal of Prosthodontics/Academy Karlsruhe Clinical Prosthodontics Educators Workshop, which was held in Baden-Baden, Germany, on June 7-10. Dr. Stanford gave a presentation, On Planning a Well-Conducted Clinical Research Study. The workshop is held biennially and supported by the International College of Prosthodontists (IJP). These workshops are a result of the IJP s editorial group s efforts to function as an international faculty in their efforts to encourage and develop clinical prosthodontic scholarship. The initiative strives to underscore the international nature and commitment of the discipline.
