The grant money will be used for a pilot study, Effectiveness of Silver Diamine Fluoride in Arresting Early Approximal Carious Lesion Progression. The study will compare conventional prevention to conventional prevention plus silver diamine fluoride (SDF) in the management of early approximal carious lesions. The hypothesis for this research is that SDF, added to a conventional caries prevention program, will be more effective than a conventional caries prevention program alone in the management of early approximal lesions in adults. Dr. Michael Kanellis, Clinic Administration and Pediatric Dentistry, is a co-principal investigator. Other faculty and staff involved with this study include Dr. Steven Armstrong, head, Operative Dentistry; Dr. Howard Cowen, Preventive and Community Dentistry; Dr. Deborah Dawson, director, Biostatistics and Research Design & Department of Pediatric Dentistry; Dr. Alberto Gasparoni, Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine; Dr. Sandra Guzman-Armstrong, Operative Dentistry; Dr. Nidhi Handoo, Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine; Karen Kluesner, Iowa Institute for Oral Health; Dr. Justine Kolker, Operative Dentistry; Amber Marolf, Iowa Institute for Oral Health; Dr. Teresa Marshall, Preventive & Community Dentistry; and Lynn Schaul, Iowa Institute for Oral Health. Colgate Oral Care Brigade The UI College of Dentistry Student Go Green Committee has placed Colgate recycle boxes near the south elevators on all four levels of the DSB. What can be recycled? Toothpaste tubes and caps, along with the outer packaging; floss containers; and toothbrushes! Note: Any brand may be recycled, besides Colgate. We will send the waste to Terracycle where it will be recycled into various products. The College receives money from Terracycle to donate to the 2011 Fund, which was established by the Class of 2011. Gifts to this fund subsidize the cost of treatment for patients in need and enable pre-doctoral students to gain essential experience and training. If the College is the top school to send in waste, we will win a bench from recycled material. So start collecting and contributing! (See page 6 of this issue also.)
