A Match Made in Orthodontics Page 2 It isn t often that the College of Dentistry, or the Department of Orthodontics for that matter, can provide a romantic setting, but Drs. Suzanne Stock and Nathan Holton can attest to Dr. Thomas Southard s matchmaking skills. Orthodontics department head, Dr. Southard, says when Suzanne was first introduced to him as a pre-doctoral student, he recognized that she was beautiful, gifted, and personable, with a strong work ethic that rare combination of terrific clinician and warm person. She is a lady, gracious, kind, adored by her patients, generous and loving. Dr. Nathan Holton, a postdoctoral fellow who has been working on research with Dr. Southard for seven years, is described by Southard as one of the most talented and exceptional individuals I have ever met Nathan is brilliant, creative, imaginative, self-motivated, and enthusiastic. After receiving her DDS at Iowa in 2007, Dr. Stock began graduate work to complete her MS in orthodontics. Soon after, Dr. Southard introduced Suzanne to Nathan. Their first date, says Nathan, took a bit of work on my part but I eventually got her to agree to go on a date. A year later, when Nathan and Suzanne were engaged, they asked Dr. Southard to marry them. He was the first to suggest that Nathan and I see each other socially, Suzanne says. I think he had a fun time playing matchmaker. But that was not the sole reason, she adds. He s been an important figure in both of our careers and our lives. Nathan agrees: We asked Tom to serve as the officiant, and he did a wonderful job. It meant a lot to have him officiate since he had played a role in getting us together in the first place, not to mention that he can be rather entertaining. The wedding was held in October 2010 at the Hotel Vetro in Iowa City. The 10 guests included family, friends, and many members of the dental and orthodontic communities. Iowa dental alumni included Dr. Robert Staley, Department of Orthodontics; Dr. Axel Ruprecht, Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine; Dr. Karin Southard, formerly Department of Orthodontics; Dr. Sonya Newstrom (DDS 07); Dr. DaNae Krutzfeldt (DDS 07); Dr. Laura Low (MS Orthodontics 09); and Dr. Clayton Parks, adjunct faculty in the Department of Orthodontics. Dr. Southard, says Suzanne, told several stories of how we got together, and we got many compliments from our guests about how personal he made the ceremony. The newlyweds plan to stay in Iowa City. Suzanne is now in a private orthodontic practice in Iowa City. Nathan will continue conducting joint research projects on craniofacial development and evolution in the Departments of Orthodontics and Anthropology. Both Suzanne and Nathan love Iowa City Suzanne says, We are very excited that the opportunity to stay became available. Thanks to the matchmaking skills of Dr. Thomas Southard! Nancy Slach, Her Daughter, Emily, and Dr. Rick Walton Participate in the Muscatine Try Melon Tri Page 3 (Left to right): Nancy Slach, Periodontics; Dr. Rick Walton, Endodontics; and Emily Slach, an Iowa sophomore. On Sunday, January 30, Nancy Slach, Department of Periodontics; her daughter, Emily, a sophomore at Iowa; and Dr. Rick Walton, Department of Endodontics emeritus, participated in the Muscatine Try Melon Tri, an indoor triathlon. Athletes swam 878 yards (1/2 mile), then rode 10 miles on a stationary bike set at level, and last, ran 40 laps (2 ½ miles). There were 80 individual competitors and about 30 relay teams. Nancy finished first in her age group (1:02:05), Emily placed fifth in her age group (1:0:29), and Rick finished fourth in his age group (1:0:05). Dr. Walton commented, I did OK. I am not a great swimmer and probably swallowed half the pool! I made up for the swim with the bike and run somewhat. Nancy reports that they had a great cheering section her husband, Ray, and two daughters, Megan and Natalie, yelled encouragement (see photos on page 5). The triathlon was held to raise funds for the Muscatine YMCA so children whose parents cannot afford to send them to the YMCA will not be turned away. For additional photos, see page 5.
