What s Out There? qcollege campuses are high risk environments for contagious illnesses. qsome more serious illnesses include: Influenza (Flu) Infectious Mononucleosis (Mono) Meningococcal Meningitis
Influenza q Seasonal flu can keep your student out of class for a week or more. q Everyone should get vaccinated every fall, but the vaccine isn t complete protection because flu viruses are constantly changing and adapting. q The best way for your student to prevent flu is to get vaccinated, avoid exposure (by washing hands and not sharing food and drink), and keep the immune system strong with a good diet and adequate sleep.
Infectious Mononucleosis q Mono can put your student out of class for a month or more, and there s no vaccine. q The only protection is to avoid exposure, and some people who are contagious for the mono virus don t look sick. A person can catch mono from their oral secretions, just by eating or drinking after them or kissing them. q Eating right and getting adequate rest help to strengthen the immune system and increase resistance.
Meningococcal Meningitis q There are several types of meningitis. One type is caused by a bacteria called meningococcus. q Meningococcus lives in the throats of many healthy people. You don t have to get exposed to someone who s sick. q Meningococcus may already be living in your student s respiratory passages or in their roommate s.
Meningococcal Vaccines q 2 doses of a quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine (Menactra, Menveo) are required for college entry in Louisiana. They help to protect your student, but like all vaccines they aren t 100% effective. q One of the meningitis B vaccines (Bexsero, Trumenba) may provide extra protection, but they are not required. q Eating right, getting enough rest, not smoking, and avoiding drinking and eating after friends all help to protect your student from this dangerous disease.
ULL Counseling and Testing Center Staff q Brian P. Frederick, PhD- Director q Kristy D. Fusilier, PhD, LPC- Assistant Director q Lorraine Hebert-Palmer, MS, LPC- Counselor q Sara Trahan, MS, PLPC- Counselor q Ashley Reed, MA, PLPC- Counselor q Karlie Butterworth, MS, PLPC- Counselor/Testing Supervisor q Beverly Craig- Administrative Assistant

About the Counseling Center q We offer an unlimited number of sessions, free-of-charge to University students, faculty, and staff. q Our goal is to provide a wide range of professional services which prolong wellness and support each person's continuing participation in higher education, development as a person, and success as a member of the university community.
