1 Cm-D 3010 American Sign Language I This curse meets Cuncil n Educatin f the Deaf Standards 1.1, and Instructrs: Radfrd, King, Kelley-King, Burns Office Hurs: TBA Phne/Vide Phne: Curse Objective: Students will gain expressive and receptive cnversatinal skills in American Sign Language and basic knwledge f Deaf histry and culture. This curse is taught in an ff-vice, ASL-nly ttal immersin atmsphere. Students are expected t respect the ff-vice language plicy in the classrm. Sign Language Lab in rm 002 f the Lillywhite building: 1. Lab assistants available during lab hurs 2. ASL DVDs n a variety f ASL and Deaf Culture tpics fr practice 3. Vide phnes prviding access t members f the Deaf cmmunity frm acrss the natin. Yu may make vide phne calls fr live interactins and discussins with Deaf peple anywhere in the U.S. Curse Requirements: 1. ASL-English Tests: Yu will have apprximately 5 ASL tests, ne n each mdule/lessn. These tests require students t translate sentences frm ASL int written English and answer questins abut stries signed in ASL. Tests 3 and 4 include an expressive cmpnent where students will translate sentences frm English int ASL. 2. Required Reading: Yu will have exams and quizzes cvering the required readings in each canvas mdule. 3. Final Creative ASL Prject : Students are required t prepare and present stries and a final creative prject in ASL.

2 4. Sign Language Lab Attendance (50 pints) and Lab Fee Infrmatin: This curse requires a $ lab fee. The fee is used t prvide ut f class practice with native users f ASL in a labratry setting. Students are required t attend lab ne hur per week. Additinal pprtunities fr practice are als prvided during pen lab drp in hurs and ccasinal immersin, ff-vice activities that are planned fr students t interact with ther users f the language. Mst activities ccur n campus but there will als be activities students can attend with the Deaf cmmunity utside f Cache Valley where there is a larger Deaf cmmunity, i.e. the Sandersn Cmmunity Center f the Deaf in Suth Salt Lake City. The lab fee als pays fr lab equipment such as vide cameras fr filming ASL prjects, cmputers fr viewing ASL literature, stries, flklre, etc. and DVDs f ASL and Deaf Culture instructin. Yu will sign up fr a lab the first week f class and labs begin the secnd week f class. Yu will interact with ther students, and a lab instructr, meeting in the ASL lab at the same time every week. This is a place where yu can get live interactin, and wrk n yur individual prjects. Please respect the ff-vice, visual cmmunicatin nly plicy in the ASL lab. 5. Fur ASL immersin interactins with Deaf Adults (25 pints each): Yu must meet smene wh is deaf during this semester. Lcally, there are Deaf Educatin Student Assciatin events. Yu culd visit the Sandersn Cmmunity Center f the Deaf in Salt Lake City r attend any ther wrkshps, activities, r meetings lcally r ut f twn during which yu have an pprtunity t have meaningful ASL cnversatins with Deaf adults. Interactins during which yu are using spken English r cmmunicating thrugh an interpreter r interactins with children d nt satisfy this requirement. Write a paper describing each activity and include the fllwing: date, time, place, peple yu met, nature f the activity, what yu learned frm the interactin, and yur impressins f the interactin. Attendance at Silent Weekend r Winter Wrkshps will cunt fr tw interactins. 6. Final Exam (200 pints): The final exam is cmprehensive and must be taken at the scheduled time. The final exam will cver vcabulary and cultural and grammatical infrmatin that is cvered in class and in the lab sessins. The grading scale based n percentage earned f the ttal number f pints pssible A B C D A B C D B C D+ Extra credit is nt available fr any student. Yu receive the grade yu earn based n test scres nly. Attendance: Yu must attend all classes in rder t keep up with the new vcabulary and sentence structures that will be intrduced. Makeup tests are nt given. Any test missed will result in a zer. If an emergency causes yu t miss a test, yu must ntify yur instructr t explain the situatin in rder fr accmmdatins t be made.

ASL Cnversatin/Vcabulary tpics: TOPICS COVERED IN ASL I: Family Relatinships Learning t make intrductins and discuss family Questins and Time The timeline in ASL, time-related vcabulary, the tempral aspect and rules and vcabulary assciated with asking questins. Classifiers, prnuns and stry telling making links between cmplex ASL expressins and their English equivalent. Mney-related ASL phrases, expressins, and vcabulary Verbs, Adverbs, Adjectives in ASL Expressing emtin Debate techniques in ASL; respnding t statements, expressing pinin and facts; discussing plitics and U.S. Histry Use f ASL t teach academic subjects ASL and English literacy as a part f bilingual bicultural educatinal prgramming fr deaf children Linguistic/Culture/Histry/Deaf Educatin tpics: (As the semester prgresses, sme f these discussins are cnducted in ASL prviding students with the infrmatin and practice cmprehending and expressing cmplex tpics in American Sign Language.) Intrductin t ASL: Myths and Facts Cmmunicating with Deaf and Hard f Hearing peple: scially/culturally apprpriate behavir Basic rules and grammatical structure f ASL and their English equivalents. 4 COURSE POLICIES: Syllabus Changes This syllabus is subject t change. I will ntify the class regarding all changes. Dates fr individual assignments and exams are tentative and may be altered based n class prgress at the discretin f the prfessr. In the event f any discrepancy between this syllabus and cntent fund in Canvas, the infrmatin in CANVAS WILL TAKE PRECENDENCE. Late Wrk Late wrk due t prcrastinatin will nt be accepted. Late wrk due t legitimate emergency may be accepted. The due date and time assciated with each quiz, discussin, exam and assignment are stated clearly in Canvas. Withdrawal Plicy and I Grade Plicy Students are required t cmplete all curses fr which they are registered by the end f the semester. In sme cases, a student may be unable t cmplete all f the cursewrk because f extenuating circumstances, but nt due t pr perfrmance r t retain financial aid. The term 'extenuating' circumstances includes: Incapacitating illness which prevents a student frm attending classes fr a minimum perid f tw weeks, A death in the immediate family, Financial respnsibilities requiring a student t alter a wrk schedule t secure emplyment, Change in wrk schedule as required by an emplyer, Other emergencies deemed apprpriate by the instructr.
