Whether you are a teacher or a practising restorative dentist this conference is a must for you. Join us for two days in the fabulous setting of the Institute of Civil Engineers in the City of Westminster. The conference will be spearheaded by the BATCD meeting exploring the issues that affect the quality of clinical learning and teaching in restorative dentistry in undergraduate UK and ROI dental schools. SPEAKERS - BRITISH ASSOCIATION FOR TEACHERS OF CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY DR. ANGELA FAIRCLOUGH Graduated from Liverpool University in 1980.

She graduated with a Masters in Education for University Lecturers in1994, followed by a PhD in 2004 on the subject of Women returning to dentistry after a career break returning and retraining

Angela is the Editor of Teaching in Higher Education, has presented nationally and internationally on dental education and has published papers, made teaching videos and contributed chapters to books

PROFESSOR ANDREW RAWLINSON Graduated from the University of Leeds, entering directly into general dental practice.

He has worked at the University of Sheffield since joining the Department of Adult Dental Care as a lecturer in 1982.

ANGELA FAIRCLOUGH Graduated from Liverpool University in Subsequent to hospital posts at Liverpool until 1983 she crossed the Pennines to Sheffield and took up a lecturing post in restorative dentistry. She graduated with a Masters in Education for University Lecturers in1994, followed by a PhD in 2004 on the subject of Women returning to dentistry after a career break returning and retraining issues. She is currently a Senior Clinical Teacher at Sheffield and Director of Learning and Teaching School of Clinical Dentistry since Angela is the Editor of Teaching in Higher Education, has presented nationally and internationally on dental education and has published papers, made teaching videos and contributed chapters to books on education issues. She is involved with the new curriculum and assessment procedures about to be implemented at Sheffield and is passionate about developing enthusiasm for learning and teaching. PROFESSOR ANDREW RAWLINSON Graduated from the University of Leeds, entering directly into general dental practice. He then held various hospital positions in Leeds, and academic posts at the University of Leeds and the University of London, before moving to Sheffield. He has worked at the University of Sheffield since joining the Department of Adult Dental Care as a lecturer in During this time he has taught on every clinical course in the department at undergraduate level, and on the taught Master s courses in his specialist area of periodontology. Since 2003, Andrew has been actively involved in the development of the new undergraduate curriculum due to be implemented in September He has particular leadership for the development and integration of the restorative dentistry curriculum. His research interests include the microbiology of periodontal diseases and the effects of treatment, investigations on host factors in gingival crevicular fluid, clinical trials on aids to oral hygiene, the effect of psychological stress on the outcome of periodontal treatment, the development of image analysis techniques, and quality of life measures to determine patient centered outcomes. MR. MATTHEW JERREAT Graduated at Bristol University in 1999 and completed his Fellowship in Restorative Dentistry in 2006 (Royal College Surgeons, Edinburgh). He is currently a Year 4 Lead /Honorary Consultant and Specialist in Restorative Dentistry at Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry. He is responsible for the overall co-ordination of the fourth year of the programme which includes student learning and wellbeing and delivery of the curriculum. He holds NHS Restorative Dentistry contracts in Musgrove Park and Royal Devon and Exeter Hospitals and provides management of patients with head and neck cancer and developmental disorders. His specialist interests include multidisciplinary care of patients with orthodontic-restorative needs and the rehabilitation of cancer patients with dental implants. PROFESSOR LAWRENCE MAIR Graduated at the University of Liverpool in 1975 and went straight into general dental practice for two years. He returned to the dental school as a lecturer and was promoted to senior lecturer in Recently he has been appointed as head of the new School of Dentistry at the University of Central Lancashire. Lawrence s research has focused on wear mechanisms in the mouth and fatigue failure in resin bonded restorations. In his present role he is engaged in working with PCT providers and postgraduate deans to understand the roles of dental education centres, outreach attachments and VT training in the education of dentists. DR. ROBERT MCANDREW Is a typical ISTJ who lists consistency as one of his major attributes in life. Robert, please never call him Bob or Bobby, is a Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Cardiff University. He qualified from the dental school in 1986 and worked in various academic and health service positions before settling in Cardiff in His PhD examined the effect of training on decision making in restoration replacement amongst dentists and his Master s thesis was on the Biomechanics of post crown systems. Robert is heavily committed towards undergraduate and postgraduate education in dentistry and regularly lectures and provides hands-on courses throughout the UK to all members of the dental team. He is an external examiner for the ORE and MFDS examinations. He sits on the editorial board of Dentistry magazine, and is director of CPD to the journal CPD in Practice. Robert is a single handicap golfer and ECB approved level II cricket coach, who also enjoys playing cricket and squash and reading James Herbert in the little spare time that he gets.

Marco is also a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Dental Research, Journal of Dentistry, American Journal of Dentistry, International Journal of Prosthodontics and Journal of Adhesive Dentistry; is the Editor of International Dentistry South Africa, and acts as a referee for 8 additional international journals. S JEREMY HAYES Is a Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry and Honorary Associate Specialist at the School of Dentistry, Cardiff University; he is on the General Dental Council, UK Specialist List in Endodontics. He was the first UK Dental Defence Union Dental Teacher of the Year in 2000/1 and is an examiner for MFDS and the General Dental Council, UK International Qualifying Examination. Jeremy is Associate Editor of the International Endodontic Journal REINHARD HICKEL Graduated Dr.med.dent. in He has been Professor, Chair of the Dental School and Head of Department of Conservative/Restorative Dentistry, Periodontology and Paediatric Dentistry, Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich since He is currently President of the German Association for Dental Education and President-Elect of the IADR-CED and is a past-president of the European Federation for Conservative Dentistry ( ). He is an Editorial Board member of eleven journals, including Journal of Dental Research, American Journal of Dentistry, Dental Materials, Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, Journal of Adhesive Dentistry and Journal of Computerized Dentistry. His research interests are: new restorative materials (especially composite, GIC, composite- and ceramic-inlay, veneers, CAD-CAM systems) minimally invasive dentistry; toxicology and side effects of restorative materials; lasers in endodontics, periodontology and restorative dentistry; wear and erosion; prevention (new diagnostic systems) in paediatric dentistry. He has published extensively with over 300 publications, 4 books and 19 book chapters. WILLIAM SAUNDERS Graduated from the Royal Dental Hospital of London in December Spent five years in the Royal Air Force and then entered general dental practice. He was a Principal for six years and then became a lecturer in Conservative Dentistry at the University of Dundee in 1981 where he completed Higher Specialist Training in Restorative Dentistry and a PhD. Appointed to a senior lectureship and consultant post in the University of Glasgow Dental School in Appointed to a Personal Chair in 1993, first as Professor of Clinical Practice and then Professor of Endodontology. Appointed Professor of Endodontology, University of Dundee in 2000 and also appointed Dean of Dentistry and Head of Department in the same year. Research interests include broad aspects of Endodontology and Applied Dental Materials. Clinical interests are linked mainly to endodontics, especially surgical and non-surgical root canal retreatment. He has been President of the British Endodontic Society, Chairman of the Association of Consultants and Specialists in Restorative Dentistry and is currently Chairman of the Education Committee of the European Society of Endodontology. He was Editor of the International Endodontic Journal for seven years from and is now a Consultant Editor. He is on the refereeing panel for a number of peer-reviewed journals and he sits on the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Dental Faculty. He is Chairman of the Speciality Advisory Board in Restorative Dentistry at the Royal College, responsible for standard setting in the monospecialities of Restorative Dentistry. He is Congress President-elect of the European Society of Endodontology for He is Chair of the Council of Heads and Deans of Dental Schools. He has lectured and provided hands-on courses throughout the world. CALLUM YOUNGSON Qualified from Dundee in 1982 and took a House Officer post in Restorative Dentistry at Leeds. Following further House Officer posts in Dundee he worked briefly in practice in Edinburgh and Perth before returning to Leeds as a temporary lecturer. After 21 years Callum left Leeds, having acted as Director of Taught Postgraduate Studies and Head of Conservative Dentistry with FDS, DRD, MRD and FDS (Rest Dent) from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, FDS RCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a DDSc from Leeds University. He was appointed as Professor/Head of Unit of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Liverpool in January 2004 and appointed to Head of Division of Dentistry with operational responsibility for the BDS programmes in January Callum s research interests are centred on materials and techniques used in the restoration of teeth and factors leading to their failure. Teaching interests are across the wide area of restorative dentistry to undergraduate and postgraduate dentists but with a special interest in teaching of occlusion and fixed (non implant) prosthodontics. Clinical interests are mainly in the field of restoring the worn dentition including the restoration of amelogenesis and dentinogenesis imperfecta.
