Dean David Johnsen and Dr. Rebecca Slayton, head of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, visited the Iowa State Capitol on February 11 to witness Governor Terry Branstad sign a proclamation declaring February as Children s Dental Health Month. As part of Children s Dental Health Month, many Iowa dentists participated in Give Kids a Smile day by assisting children from lowincome families. Dentist participation included visiting daycare centers to talk to children about the importance of teeth brushing and establishing healthy dietary habits; providing free exams and cleanings; and/or providing free extractions and restorative work. There are other examples of how Iowa dentists provide programs and services to members of their community who don t have dental insurance or the ability to pay for services: Donated Dental Services (DDS) is a program that assists disabled or elderly people who cannot pay for dental treatment and who lack financial assistance. The Iowa Mission of Mercy (IMOM) provides two days of free dental care on a first-come, first-served basis. Last year, Iowa dentists who participated in IMOM served almost 1,400 patients with more than $950,000 in free dental health services. This year, the 2011 IMOM will be held in Sioux City, Iowa. Georgia and Bill Johnson at the Riverside Casino. On February 14, 1974, Dr. Bill Johnson, head of Endodontics, first met his wife, Dr. Georgia Johnson, head of Periodontics. After they married, the honeymooning Johnsons attended a club in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where the Righteous Brothers (Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield) were performing. It was an unforgettable evening. Fast forward to Valentine s Day, To celebrate this romantic date when they first met, and to relive their memorable honeymoon evening, Bill took Georgia to a performance given by Bill Medley at the Riverside Casino. The Johnsons review: Awesome concert! The Righteous Brothers first began singing together in Some of their well-known hits include You ve Lost That Lovin Feelin, You re My Soul and Inspiration, Just Once in My Life, and I ve Had the Time of My Life. Their music also appeared in several movies: Top Gun, Ghost, Dirty Dancing, and Naked Gun. Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in March Bobby Hatfield died later that year, but Bill Medley continues to perform.

3 Page 3 Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses Faculty and staff are reminded of the following policy regarding work-related injuries and illnesses. All faculty and staff members must be initially treated at UI HealthWorks in North Liberty for any work-related injury or illness (Note this change in location from UIHC Employee Health Clinic to the North Liberty clinic). EXCEPTION: care needed as a result of needle sticks, blood borne pathogens, and infectious diseases will continue to be provided by the University Employee Health Clinic at UIHC. UI HealthWorks is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Workers Health Clinic, Clinic A, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. If possible, please phone UI HealthWorks ( ) or the Employee Health Clinic ( ) prior to arriving for treatment. When UI HealthWorks or the Worker s Health Clinic is closed, the UIHC Emergency Treatment Center should be used. You must inform the Emergency Center staff that you are requesting treatment due to a workplace injury. Emergencies are considered to be the sudden, serious, and unexpected onset of symptoms that require immediate medical care. Please carefully note the following important fact: any initial treatment for a workrelated injury or illness received outside of UI HealthWorks, the Workers Health Clinic, or University Hospital Emergency Center will not be covered by either Worker s Compensation or your University health insurance plan. If you have questions, please contact Dental Human Resources at Charlotte Meyers, Former Endo Clinic Clerk Visits the Department of Endodontics (Left to right): Karen Wallace, Lisa Harless, and Charlotte Meyers. Charlotte worked in the Department of Endodontics as their clinic clerk for 19 years. She celebrated her 81st birthday recently and brought her birthday treats (caramel bars) for the Endodontics faculty and staff. Karen, Lisa, and Charlotte talked about the old days when there were no computers. Says Karen: Charlotte is always welcome to the Department of Endodontics, especially when she brings her caramel bars. We love them! Nobody makes caramel bars like Charlotte! Note: Charlotte was recently called back to work at ACT!

8 Page 8 Monthly Health Feature March 2011 Celebrate National Nutrition Month with these Simple Tips! by Emma Hulseberg, UI Wellness Spring 2011 Practicum Student It s National Nutrition Month! Why not use this month as a stepping stone for making some healthy lifelong changes? It can be hard changing habits, but remember to take it slowly and only make one or two changes at a time. Here are some ideas: Think small steps. Bringing your lunch is a great way to save money and eat healthy, but it can be hard to bring lunch every day. Think about phasing it in try 3 days a week for the first step. Remember to eat slowly. It takes about minutes for your brain to identify that you are full. Think about ways you can slow down at meal time: ideas include putting your fork down between each bite, having a drink of water between bites, adding a clear broth soup as a side to your meal, or using a small eating utensil. Take advantage of the UChoose program on campus. If you do happen to eat a meal at any of the various cafeterias, you can find yellow apple symbols in the dining areas denoting foods that meet the healthy UChoose food criteria. Right now, UChoose is available at UIHC and in Burge and Hillcrest Residence Halls. Try to eat a balanced breakfast every morning. It is very important to jump-start your day with enough energy to last until your next meal. Eating breakfast will also help you prevent overeating when it comes time for lunch. Substitute one or two of your sugary drinks for water. By making this choice, you can avoid empty calories and improve your hydration. Keeping yourself hydrated can help satiate you throughout the day. A few small nutritional goals a week can lead to great victories in your lifelong journey of healthy living.
