1 DSB WEEKLY NO. 784 November 12, 2007 Department of Periodontology Faculty Attend the 2007 AAP Annual Meeting The annual meeting of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) was held in Washington, D.C., October 27-30, and attended by several members of the Department of Periodontics, including Drs. Steve Clark, Ali Fakhry, Lewis Humbert and Georgia Johnson. At the opening ceremonies, Dr. Georgia Johnson received a Special Citation Award recognizing her contributions to development of revisions in the accreditation standards for advanced education programs in periodontics. She chaired the AAP Task Forces to review these standards in and Dr. Ali Fakhry presented a lecture, Reconstruction of the Alveolar Ridge Using a Novel Inlay/Onlay Bone Grafting Technique, which highlighted site development for dental implant placement using autogenous bone. Dr. Fakhry s lecture was well received and featured digital video of surgical procedures. On October 27, Dr. Mike Franzman (Iowa DDS 2004; certificate in periodontics and MS oral sciences in 2007) competed in the prestigious Balint Orban Research Competition and was awarded first place in the Basic Science division for his presentation, Targeted Antimicrobial Activity of SMAP28 Conjugated to P. gingivalis Antibodies." His primary research mentor for this project was Dr. Kim Brogden, Department of Periodontics and Dows Institute for Dental Research. Dr. Franzman s research focused on a novel approach to develop a selective antimicrobial agent that can eliminate a specific periodontal pathogen (e.g., P. gingivalis) from patients with periodontal disease without harming the normal commensal flora. Such an approach would target the antimicrobial activity towards the pathogen only and would be void of adverse reactions often associated with the use of broadspectrum antibiotics. For this, a potent antimicrobial peptide was linked to an antibody specific only for the outer surface of P. gingivalis. The selective activity of the new antimicrobial agent was then assessed by adding it to an artificially generated microbial community containing equal concentrations of three bacteria associated with periodontal disease. At select concentrations, the antimicrobial agent was specific and killed P. gingivalis. Dr. Babatunde Bamgbose Wins University of Lagos Best Researcher of the Year Award Dr. Babatunde O. Bamgbose, OPRM resident, has won the University of Lagos (Nigeria) University Best Researcher of the Year Award for his outstanding research efforts. He is one of six faculty from the university who are receiving the award. Dr. Bamgbose is a faculty member in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Lagos. College of Dentistry Researchers Part of Cavity Research Project Dr. Steven Levy, Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, will be subcontract project director of a multi-site research consortium that has received more than $1 million from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. During the two-year project, several researchers from The University of Iowa and other institutions will study the genetic and environmental causes of cavities. The research will be part of the National Institute of Health s Genes, Environment and Health Initiative. Investigators and staff from the Colleges of Dentistry and Medicine will include Dr. David Drake, and Dows; Drs. Teresa Marshall and John Warren, Preventive and Community Dentistry; Dr. Andrew Lidral, Department of Orthodontics; Dr. James Wefel, Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Dows; Dr. Julie Gilmore, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry; Barbara Broffitt, Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry; Sally Santiago, College of Medicine; and Dr. Marcia Willing, College of Medicine. The University will receive $156,000 of the total grant funding. Other university participants in the research will include the Universities of Pittsburgh; Washington; Michigan; and California, San Francisco. The overall director of the research project will be Dr. Mary Marazita, University of Pittsburgh. 1
