4 Page 4 Jane King s Parents Celebrate Their 70th Wedding Anniversary (Above, Jane King, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Above) Margaret and Allen Sprague Meet Allen and Margaret Sprague, my mom and dad. November 2, 2012, they will be married 70 years! They are 88-years-old and healthier than most. They still live on the family farm, have a big garden and, yes, flowers, flowers and more flowers. Early in their marriage they survived four children in five years! At the age of, with four small children to support, my father lost his prominent hand in a farming accident. In order to learn to write again, he started keeping a diary. Every day since the fall of 1957 has been recorded. At the age of 4, my mother started college and obtained her teaching degree in four years. She is a breast cancer survivor and one of the strongest people I know. Twenty years ago we lost my sister, Mollie, to a brain aneurysm, and then nine years ago we lost our sister-in-law, Pam, to brain cancer. What a devastating time for everyone. As any parent will tell you, it is not supposed to work that way. As difficult as these two events were for them, my mom and dad continued to be strong for each other and for the rest of our family. My parents are an example of what all parents should be. Their unconditional love and support is immeasurable. I know many of you feel the same about your parents as I do mine. I feel most fortunate that I still have mine and I just might be part of a small group who can say they can celebrate their parent s seventieth wedding anniversary with them! We are having a family celebration on Saturday, November. We would like to shower them with cards. Their address is 474 State Hwy 10, Clinton, IL I know most of you do not know them, but for those of you who do, please feel free to drop them a card/note. Actually, even if you don t know them, if you think being married to the same person for seventy years is amazing, feel free to let them know. Thank you for letting me ramble on about my mom and dad. You should know that you are friends with me one of the most blessed, most fortunate, and most proud to say that I am one of Allen and Margaret Sprague s children. Michelle and her husband, Tom, donated items for the baskets, along with the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic and several departments at the College of Dentistry. The basket s theme was dental care for all ages and included toothbrushes, toothpaste, Spry gum, brushing timers, t-shirts, mugs, temporary tattoos, dental health tips, brochures with information about becoming a patient at the College, and even CoD Tiger Hawk sunglasses, which Ella sported during the photo. She is a preschooler at Preucil. Tom Hermann took the photo.
