2 Introduction The organising committee of the conference is pleased to present this exciting new venture which will bring together knowledge, practical expertise and management aspects of Restortive Dentistry. It will be of direct relevance to all of those with an interest in Restorative Dentistry. The conference provides an outstanding opportunity to hear international experts in their fields and to network with like-minded colleagues. It will be of particular interest to: general dental practitioners, vocational trainees, specialists, academics, dental technicians, hygienists, therapists and dental students. The first day of the conference will offer parallel sessions in the afternoon and delegates will have the opportunity to move between sessions to listen to the speaker of their choice. The second day of the conference will be a single main session offering speakers of particular interest to all disciplines. On the second day of the meeting, there will be the opportunity for delegates to present a 10 mintue oral presentation of a clinical case relevant to Restorative Dentistry for the British Society for Restorative Dentistry Gary Pollock Postgraduate Clinical Prize. The Society encourages applications from all postgraduate students, higher specialist trainees and foundation trainees. 4 Speakers Dr Paul Baker Paul Baker qualified in 1992 from Kings College School of Medicine and Dentistry. He spent two years working in hospital oral and maxillofacial surgery followed by a short stint working in general dental practice. In 1996 he started an MSc in periodontology at Guys Hospital. In 1998 he continued with a Master of Clinical Dentistry degree at Kings College London, which he passed with distinction. He was one of the first dentists to finish a specialist training pathway recognised by the General Dental Council and after passing the Royal College of Surgeons Membership in Restorative Dentistry was awarded a certificate of completion of specialist training in Since 2000 he has worked in specialist practice, limited to the treatment of periodontal disease and implant surgery. He has taught at all levels within dentistry, from teaching undergraduates at Guys hospital to specialist level courses on advanced surgical techniques for the British Society of Periodontology. Colette Bridgman A Consultant in Dental Public Health (CsDPH) Public Health England April 2013, a member of NHS England National Commissioning Group for dentistry as Chair of the sub task group on Oral and Maxillo Facial Surgery and member of the national vulnerable people sub groups. Prior to this she was seconded to the NHS Commissioning Board, as clinical and public health lead, on the development of securing excellence strategy for commissioning secondary, primary and salaried dental services in England. She has been an Associate Specialist Clinical Adviser with Primary Care Commissioning PCC national dental team since Her interests/special projects encompass clinical leadership, referral management, oral health needs assessment, service redesign in primary dental care, workforce and skills development, within a care pathway approach. She has contributed to the development of the Pilot Dental Quality and Outcomes Framework and clinical training programme. She has contributed to the DH advanced care pathway groups. Ian Burn Ian has over thirty years experience in general dental practice and during this time kept a keen interest in the profession with regional roles in clinical audit, as postgraduate dental tutor and in undergraduate teaching at Manchester Dental School. More recently he has concentrated on undergraduate teaching and is currently a Senior Clinical Teacher at the School of Dentistry, University of Central Lancashire, with a lead role in teaching periodontology. Professor Nico Creugers Graduated from Radboud University Nijmgen where he also got his PhD. Worked as a general practitioner until 1994, in which year he was appointed professor and head of the Department of Oral Function and Prosthetic Dentistry. He is drirector of the dental educational programs of the Radboud University Medical Centre since He published more than 180 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
5 Speakers Dr Ulpee Darbar Ulpee is a full-time Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and is on the specialist lists in Restorative Dentistry, Periodontology and Prosthodontics. Her clinical expertise lies in the management of patients with complex and multidisciplinary problems including tooth loss, soft tissue loss and replacement with dental implants. She lectures nationally and internationally and is extensively involved in post-graduate level education and training for dentists, specialists and dental care professionals. She wrote the first book on dental implants for dental nurses. She has an active role in research as co-investigator and has published more than 30 papers. She is currently Clinical Director at Eastman Dental Hospital where she manages the service. This has involved pathway redesign, protocol development and reshaping service delivery in line with high quality patient care. She additionally holds Board positions in Royal Colleges and associations. Dr James Field James is a lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at Newcastle University. He leads a number of internal and external skills courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level. His main teaching interests are Prosthodontics and Key Clinical Skills, delivering over 300 hours of simulator teaching each year. Since completing his MA in Education, James has initiated a series of innovation-fund projects to improve the student experience at Newcastle. Most recently he received the coveted Vice-Chancellor s Distinguished Teacher award and the Association for Dental Education in Europe s Educator Award, in recognition of his exceptional contribution to teaching excellence. Dr Gurpal Singh Gosall Dr Gurpal Singh Gosall is a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist. He looks after inpatients in the Psychiatric Intensive Care Units in Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust. He studied medicine at Cambridge University and Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals in London. He has a long-standing interest in teaching and information technology. In 2000 he founded a medical training company, Superego Cafe, which runs websites and courses for healthcare professionals, including criticalappraisal.com. He is an international speaker on critical appraisal skills and runs regular courses in the UK, Middle East, Hong Kong and Australia. In September 2012 his book, The Doctor's Guide to Critical Appraisal (PasTest, 3rd edition), won first prize in the Basis of Medicine category at the BMA Medical Book Awards 2012 in London. Dr Steve Jarvis Steve specialises in pilot performance and training optimisation; conducting research for organisations including British Airways, Thomsonfly, easyjet and the RAF, and performing human error investigations for companies including Thomas Cook Airlines and Air New Zealand. Simulators are a key resource in this, and having qualified as a Boeing 737 pilot, Steve has experienced simulation from both sides of the fence. Although now independent, he remains a visiting fellow at Cranfield University and visiting lecturer at Kings College London.
6 Speakers Dr Yuan-Ling (Paula) Ng Dr Ng is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Endodontology at UCL Eastman Dental Institute; she is the Programme Director for the MSc in Endodontics and the MClinDent in Endodontology. She is a UK General Dental Council registered specialist in Endodontics and a certified member of the European Society of Endodontology. She has lectured to both local and international professional bodies. Dr Ng s research interests are focused on the effectiveness and long-term outcomes of endodontic treatment. She has published widely in international peer-reviewed journals with over 40 peerreviewed articles and 80 research abstracts. Dr. Ng s other professional commitments include her membership of the scientific committee of the European Society of Endodontology and Associate editorship of the International Endodontic Journal. Dr Nikos Mardas Dr Nikos Mardas qualified in Dentistry from University of Athens in 1992, completed his 3 year specialist training and the Master of Science degree in Periodontology at the Royal Dental College, Denmark, in 1997 and was awarded his PhD in 2005 from the same University. In 2005, he joined the world known Eastman Dental Institute (UCL) where he is currently Senior Clinical Lecturer (Associate Professor level) and co-ordinator for the MClin Dent in Periodontology program. A member in all the leading National and European scientific and professional bodies in Periodontology and Implant dentistry and Fellow of the International Team for Implantology. He has published many papers in national and international journals in the field of tissue regeneration and dental implants and in 2011 he was awarded the basic research price from the European Association of Osseointegration. Dr Mardas has more than 16 years of private practice and university/ hospital based post qualification clinical experience in Periodontics and Implant Dentistry in Denmark, Greece and UK where is currently consultant Periodontist and implant surgeon in 3 private practices. Mr William McLaughlin Will McLaughlin is a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Cardiff Dental Hospital having been appointed in He is also postgraduate tutor for Hospital Dentistry in Wales since He is currently convenor for part 2 MFDS for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He examines for MRD and is an ISFE examiner for Restorative Dentistry. He is currently in his third term of office on the SAC in Restorative Dentistry, having chaired the subcommittee for Quality Assurance and Enhancement from 2000 to Over the 20 years he has provided over 250 postgraduate courses to practitioners and trainees on a range of dental, medical and medico-legal subjects. From he was Clinical Director of Cardiff Dental Hospital and is currently clinical lead for Restorative Dentistry. Dr Basil Mizrahi Basil specialised in the USA in prosthodontics and implants and is recognised by the General Dental Council as a Specialist in Prosthodontics and Restorative dentistry. He runs a full time, referral based private practice specialising in Complex Rehabilitation and Aesthetic Cases and Dental Implants. He is Director of Mizrahi Dental Teaching where he runs hands-on and didactic courses in all aspects of Advanced Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry. He is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at UCL Eastman Dental Institute and a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics.
7 Speakers Eric Rooney Qualified as a dentist in 1983, he began work doing voluntary VT in Liverpool. He has held a number of roles in the NHS including Clinical Director, Locality General Manager and Medical Director. He was involved in Dental Policy development through the British Dental Association in the 1990 s. In 2008/9 he was a member of The Independent Review Team Led by Professor Jimmy Steele. Since then he has chaired the Department of Health s Quality and Pathways Steering Group and facilitated the development and agreement of the clinical pathways being delivered in the governments NHS dental contract reform programme. He recently chaired a review of the clinical pathways after a year s testing in 70 pilot dental practices and the recommendations were implemented in the revised pilots in April Mr Lee Savarrio Lee is a specialist in Restorative Dentistry and currently works as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Glasgow Dental Hospital where he is currently Clinical Lead in Restorative Dentistry with subspecialty interests in Periodontics, Endodontics and Hypodontia. He is closely involved in the training of hospital staff and also enjoys teaching general dental practitioners and undergraduate dental students. His clinical interests are in surgical periodontics including implant placement, hypodontia and surgical endodontics. Lee also works in private practice mainly providing specialist periodontal care on a referral basis. Lee has published in peer reviewed journals and presented work at a national and international level as well as contributing a chapter to the popular Oxford Handbook of Clinical Dentistry. Frank Schwarz Frank has been Research Associate Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Ludwig Maximilians University, München, Germany. He was then Assistant Professor, Department of Oral Surgery, followed by Associate Professor and since 2010 Clinical Professor at Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf.Main research activities: Guided Bone Regeneration, Growth Factors, Implant Surfaces, Treatment of Peri-implant Diseases. Associate Editor: Journal of Clinical Periodontology. Editorial Board Member: Clinical Oral Implants Research. André Schroeder Research Prize 2007, Miller Research Prize Vice President German Association of Oral Implantology (DGI), Member of the EAO Junior Committee, Expert Council of the Osteology Research Academy. Professor Mark Woolford Mark is Director of Education at King s College London Dental Institute. He was a strand-lead in the haptel project looking at the use of haptic technology in dentistry, a million pound initiative that was funded by the ESRC and the EPSRC. He has an MA in Education and in 2013 won a National Teaching Fellowship.
