The new system will have excellent new features that we will roll-out a little bit at a time. As always, we are working hard to bring you quality programming by strengthening our offerings. We are now accepting both SilverSneakers AND Silver and Fit! Your Wellness Team was hard at work, advocating for the program to come to Tanglewood Park. We could not be more excited to welcome SilverSneakers to our list of opportunities to participate in our programs. SilverSneakers is the nation s leading exercise program designed exclusively for Medicare-eligible adults. SilverSneakers offers physical activity, health education and social events, helping to reduce health care costs driven by the physical and mental effects of aging and physician and hospital visits. Check-in at the Wellness Office to find out how your insurance coverage works with this program and determine your benefit eligibility. AgeWell Services has been working hard behind the scenes on a new participant tracking program to better serve our guests at the Wellness Center. We want to help the transition by checking our processes and procedures. After the New Year, Wellness team members will be stopping all current members to ensure their information is up to date in the new system Update From Wellness: The Wellness office will be implementing a new check-in process in the upcoming new year. Please be aware that our friendly Wellness Team will be stopping you as you come in the building for a time; to ensure we are able to update our new system and also to ensure you are receiving your new barcoded check-in device. Perhaps you could also use this time to be sure you are getting the most out of your membership! If you are an individual who runs by the Wellness desk trying to get to your class on time, please do us a favor (and alleviate the frustration you ll feel when we stop you) and get here a little early as we will be stopping you to check you in and get updated information. We are hopeful that this process will be short-lived and you ll be able to check in with your new membership badge relatively soon. We are asking for some grace during this time as we try to better your entire Wellness experience! Happy New Year and be well!

3 Members Corner AgeWell Wellness Center Success Story Name: Bobby Whitlock AgeWell Member Since: 2017 What classes have you taken at AgeWell? My first class at AgeWell was a Matter of Balance class. I met great seniors using a curriculum that would keep me from falling using materials that were produced by Boston University. I then started a class called Hot Dog Weights produced by the American Arthritis Association The purpose was to strengthen my ankles and legs to maintain my muscles and balance. I also took Hatha Yoga, Tai Chi, Sit & Fit and other classes. What is your greatest success since becoming an AgeWell member? In Chicago they have discovered that socialization will almost stop Alzheimer s Disease. After my wife s death, I needed this place. One of my greatest successes is my new-found self-discovery. Grief groups help, but this is a place I can come every day I wish. Hear it from Bobby: The remarkable assets here are: the amazing people, the instructors, and all of the staff. The staff is kind, caring and competent. I hope I have helped others as much as I have been helped. This is an outstanding group of people who give of themselves for others. 5 SPECIAL EVENTS & ACTIVITIES Advance Directives The Charted Healthcare Planning Coalition recommends that adults over the age of 18 have an Advance Directive in place. This allows an individual's designated healthcare proxy to make medical decisions on their behalf if they are no longer able to make their wishes known. Contact the Wellness Office to schedule your 30 minute appointment: (231) FREE Blood Pressure Checks Did you know AgeWell Services offers FREE blood pressure checks every Monday? Stop by the Game between 9:30 a.m.-noon. FREE and open to the public. No appointment necessary. Group These FREE sessions will be with Sheri Goik- Kurn, Masters of Science on Thursdays, from October 4 - December 20. Possible topics include: Creating Healthy Boundaries, Understanding Feelings and Defenses, Co- Dependency, How old tapes and self-talk affect our attitudes, Tossing out that old baggage & Serentity-Courage to Change. Foot Care by Lynda Take care of your feet with Lynda, licensed cosmetologist for only $15! Appointment includes: foot soak, nail trim, massage, lotion and polish. 6 FITNESS CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Beginner Level Classes Seated Hatha Yoga 1: In this class you will be guided through a safe and gentle series of exercises to improve relaxation, flexibility, strength, range of motion, mental focus and breathing. Modifications for those with special needs will be offered. This entire class is done in a chair and there is no floor work. Hot Dog Weights: Do you have lower extremity joint pain & stiffness due to osteoarthritis? Using half lb. to 10 lb. weights, we will build up your leg strength, improve your balance & increase your self confidence while managing your arthritis. Seated Cardio Class & Strength: This class starts with a stretch, continue into drumming and shakers moving the body and having fun. This is a seated class, moving the body and just plain fun. This is great for people with walkers, canes or wheelchairs. All are welcome. Stretch N More: In this class you will learn a combination of health tips (arthritis and other), relaxation techniques and a majority of stretching exercises. You will work at your own pace to increase flexibility and reduce levels of pain and stiffness. This class can be done sitting in a chair or standing. *This class is endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation. Easy Level Classes: Early Bird Stretch with Ball: In this class you will revitalize your body by stretching all your major muscle groups. This class will help keep your back healthy with some stretches on the stability ball. This class gets on the floor, but you may stay seated. Heavy Hands Cardio Plus: In this 30-minute class you will use light hand weights at all times (optional) while wearing a pedometer and recording each week on how many steps you can get in 25 minutes while doing cardio moves at your own pace. Seated Zumba with Golden Beat and Balance: This class combines Latin rhythms with easy-to-follow moves to create an enjoyable cardiovascular and mind workout to improve coordination, balance and memory. No dance skills needed. Seated Zumba Toning: Zumba class from your chair. Burn calories and exercise muscles using toning sticks. Enjoy exercise done to Latin music. Moderate Level Classes: s Alive Combo: In this class you will enjoy drums, cardio, and hand weights to help keep your strong. It is three classes in one: Silver Fun & Fit, Zumba Gold, and s. *This class is endorsed by Silver & Fit. Enhanced Fitness: Combines 4 classes in 1 Strength Training, Flexibility, Aerobic Exercise, and Balance. Hatha Yoga 2: In this class you will work on relaxation, strength, balance and flexibility techniques with emphasis on proper body alignment and improved breathing. You should have prior yoga experience or be comfortable standing, sitting and getting up and down from the floor. Line Dancing 1: In this class you will have moderate movements to keep your heart healthy and burn calories. Senior Shape Up: In this class you will work on strengthening your muscles and enjoy some aerobic walking and dancing. Silver FUN & Fit: In this class you will enjoy a variety of fun, low impact aerobics, light weights, tubes, and Zumba. Zumba Gold: This class combines Latin rhythms with easy-to-follow moves to create an enjoyable cardiovascular workout. No dance skills needed. Challenging Level Classes: Cardio Circuit: In this 40 minute class you will do kickboxing steps, ab work, drums alive, and working with weights and bars. Cardio Dance & More: In this non-stop class you will enjoy cardio, weights for shoulders and an ab workout with a cool down at the end. Dumbbells & Weights: In this class you will challenge both muscular strength and muscular endurance by incorporating dumbbells (hand weights) and weights (with a bar) designed to work the major muscle groups. Hatha Yoga 3: In this class you will improve your flexibility, strength, balance, while learning additional poses and stretches. Line Dancing 2: For the crowd who has done more than a year of dancing and like it faster with new moves. Get heart rates to target and burn calories. Zumba: This class combines Latin rhythms with easy-to-follow moves to create an enjoyable cardiovascular workout. This class burns about 800 calories per hour while engaging the core, upper and lower body. (Music is loud!) Zumba with Zumba Toning: This 60-minute class combines Latin rhythms with easy-to-follow moves to create an enjoyable cardiovascular workout. Burn extra calories and exercise muscles using toning sticks. This class burns about 800 calories per hour while engaging the core, upper and lower body. Page 6
