Every member of the department is responsible for the care of facilities and equipment with particular attention to the activities, which they are responsible for. All members of the department must count equipment out and in, in each lesson. Any breakages or losses should be reported to the Subject Leader.

4 NATIONAL CURRICULUM AREAS OF ACTIVITY COVERED AT NSG COURSE OUTLINE The curriculum should meet the needs and capabilities of all individual students and allow opportunity for particular interests to be developed. The programme includes elements from the following areas. GAMES A structured programme that develops understanding and skill in a range of individual, paired and teamed activities, which promote and encourage involvement, commitment, and enjoyment leading to the development of a lasting interest. The range of games are immense; it is therefore the policy of the department to select a range of games that are representative of each of the types of games available. To a certain extent this choice will be influenced by the expertise of the staff and the predominant sporting interests of the students involved. GYMNASTIC AND TRAMPOLINING A programme showing progression and continuity in the acquisition of skills mobility and strength based on the needs of the individual students. This offers imaginative and challenging activities on the trampoline and using the gymnastic equipment. The programme provides opportunities for students to plan, perform and evaluate sequences of movement. DANCE A programme which provides the students with the opportunity to learn and develop a range of dance skills. They will be able to compose, perform and evaluate their own and others performances. Various stimuli will be used including repertoire, poetry, art and those of professional dancers through video and music. ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES A structured programme to develop skills and understanding in a range of running, jumping and throwing activities. This area also provides the opportunity to learn the basic principles of aerobic and anaerobic training in order to plan and carry out an effective personal training schedule for a chosen event.
5 OUTDOOR ADVENTUROUS ACTIVITIES This programme provides the opportunity to be taught the skills and techniques specific to problem solving tasks and team work challenges. SWIMMING A structured programme to develop skill in a range of swimming strokes enabling students to plan, understand, apply and evaluate appropriate techniques for starting, turning and finishing. It also provides the opportunity for students to experience a variety of game forms and water based activities, such as personal survival and life-saving skills. HEALTH-RELATED EXERCISE Although health related issues are covered across all activity areas, the PE programme has included a separate unit of work within Key Stage 3 and 4 covering HRE. A programme which provides students with the opportunity to learn, develop and extend their knowledge and understanding of key issues towards maintaining and promoting health and fitness. Various fitness tests and methods of training and basic planning of health-promoting programmes will be strongly encouraged.
6 Northampton School for Girls YEAR 7 PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND DANCE In Physical Education and Dance you will take part in a range of activities, some will be new to you others will be a progression from skills learnt in primary school. AIM: In all your lessons you will be encouraged to: Take part and enjoy activities both in and out of school. Improve your personal standards in a range of activities by planning, performing and evaluating your own and other s work. Improve your understanding of the activities and knowledge of the rules. Understand how regular exercise can keep you fit and healthy. COURSE CONTENT: You will have TWO fifty minute lessons per week. You will have 7/8 lessons of netball, football, rounders, 10 lessons of athletics and basketball and you will complete 12 lessons of dance, swimming and gymnastics. You will be taught the following: Basketball/Netball/Football/Rounders/Table Tennis: You will cover basic level skills, techniques, rules, scoring and how to umpire/referee. Athletics: You will take part in running, jumping and throwing events and may have the opportunity to complete the Athletics Awards. Swimming: You will cover various basic stroke techniques, water skills and personal survival skills. Dance: You will cover various dance themes and will be working on your own, in pairs or small groups. You will learn and develop your movement vocabulary, composition using different styles, ideas and music. 8 Northampton School for Girls YEAR 9 PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND DANCE In Physical Education and Dance you will take part in activities previously learned in Year 7/8 but you will be expected to perform at a higher level on a regular basis. AIM : In all your lessons you will be encouraged to: Take part and enjoy activities both in and out of school. Improve your personal standards in a range of activities by planning, performing and evaluating your own and other s work. Improve your understanding of the activities and knowledge of the rules by developing skills, techniques and tactics. Understand how regular exercise can keep you fit and healthy. COURSE CONTENT : You will have two fifty minute lessons per week. You will have 7/8 lessons of each activity. You will be taught the following: Basketball/Netball/Football/Badminton/Rounders: You will cover basic and higher level skills, techniques, rules, scoring and how to umpire/referee. Athletics: You will take part in running, jumping and throwing events and may have the opportunity to complete the Athletics Awards. Swimming: You will cover various basic stroke techniques, water skills and personal survival skills. You may also have the opportunity to complete the ASA Water Skill Awards. Dance: You will cover various dance themes and will be working on your own, in pairs or small groups. You will learn and develop your movement vocabulary, composition and evaluation skills using different styles, ideas and music. Trampolining: You will learn how to perform and develop movements and techniques and be able to link these movements to form a routine. You may work towards completing routines from the BSGA Star Award Scheme. Health Related Exercise: You will take part in a range of activities to assess and develop your own and other s personal level of fitness. You will cover aspects of pulse reading and its meaning and be involved in various fitness tests. You will also experience other fun and enjoyable ways of becoming fit and healthy for example, aerobics and circuit training. In addition you will extend your understanding of the processes of warming up and cooling down and the effects of exercise on the body. Basic principles of planning programmes will also be covered.
9 ASSESSMENT: You will be assessed throughout the lessons and at each of the activities using the National Curriculum Levels. You will be assessed on your: Attendance, participation and appropriate use of PE kit. Own personal performance, individually and as a team/group member. Ability to plan, perform and evaluate your own and others work. Knowledge and understanding of the activities. Understanding of the importance of warm-ups and cool downs, including safety points.
10 KEY STAGE 4 STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS At Key Stage 4 activities are programmed in half term modules. In Year 11, participants are able to select their specialised areas from a limited option programme. Key Stage 4 (Year 10) Basketball Badminton Netball Volleyball Athletics Rounders Trampolining Health Related Exercise Team Building/Orienteering Key Stage 4 (Year 11) All students will follow a 30 week course. The option programme offers opportunities to specialise in different activities or participate in interform competitions. This programme may include: Games: Basketball, Netball, Volleyball, Football, Hockey, Rounders, Softball, Baseball, Cricket, Rugby, Tennis, Badminton, Lacrosse. Gym Activities: Trampolining, Aerobics, Yoga, Health Related Exercise Swimming: Swim Fit, Stroke improvement, Personal Survival, Life-Saving, Water Skills Awards. Athletics Outdoor Education Any event(s) student wishes to study further. Problem-solving, team-work, orienteering Options are dependant on facilities available, time-tabling of staff and groups, and the specialisms and interests of the teaching staff.
