This prgram fr students in sixth thrugh eighth grades creates a psitive and cperative learning envirnment that prvides maximum participatin and cmprehensive strategies t develp healthy lifestyle chices fr all children. These activities prmte a healthy attitude tward ttal wellness while enhancing fitness and skills. The curriculum will emphasize skill building and interactin f students with family, cmmunity, and schl thrugh a variety f activities. Healthy Chices Educatin will prvide a mre cmprehensive lifestyle management apprach, encuraging imprved physical fitness and nutritin. Each student is unique; the Healthy Chices educatin prgram will prvide fr the variety f needs thrugh a studentcentered curriculum and will prvide assessment thrugh the use f latest technlgy. Page 3
4 Healthy Chices Educatin Prgram Missin Statement The Des Mines Independent Cmmunity Schl District s Healthy Chices Educatin Prgram enhances each student s ttal wellness thrugh intellectual, scial, emtinal, physical, and spiritual develpment. Assumptins The fllwing assumptins underlie the visin f Healthy Chices Educatin described in this dcument: All Healthy Chices Educatrs are licensed in physical educatin. All Healthy Chices Educatrs are current in first aid and CPR. Equipment is prvided fr each student. Class sizes are manageable and meet district guidelines. Title IX is fllwed and a gender balance is enfrced. All activities are develpmentally apprpriate and prvide a psitive learning experience. All students are assessed Individual Disability Educatin Act guidelines are fllwed. Healthy Chices fr All Students The challenges facing the yuth f Des Mines demand all students experience a meaningful Healthy Chices curriculum. The standards and benchmarks in this dcument shuld prvide a backgrund fr creating a curriculum that will help all students develp a healthy, active lifestyle thrughut their lives. Page 4
5 Infusins The Healthy Chices curriculum includes activities which incrprate multicultural/nnsexist cncepts, glbal educatin, and higher rder thinking skills, schl-t-wrk initiatives, technlgy, and interdisciplinary cnnectins.
