3 A Look Back Painting Class Caramel Apple Bar Welcome November! I can t believe that we are into the eleventh month of the year already. Two of my favorite days of the year fall in November. The first is fallback, the end of daylight savings time on November 4 th when we gain an hour of sleep! The second is, of course, Thanksgiving, and all the food and family that make that day special. I am looking forward to seeing our residents and their family members at our Thanksgiving Dinner on Saturday, November 17 th. Just a reminder to our pet parents, please make sure that you are using the Dog Waste Stations located at the main entrance and in the courtyard. We provide the bags and the can for disposal. If an accident happens inside the building, please inform a team member immediately so we can make sure to spot clean the carpet. Also, be careful when walking your pets now that it is getting colder. We salt the sidewalks, but sometimes spots just stay slick. Use caution if you go out early morning or in the evening. Keep in mind that your fur babies paws may be sensitive to the salt and they may prefer to walk in the grass or even snow. Chris Ruzicka, Manager Greetings Celebrations I can t believe its November already. This year is almost coming to an end. Time flies so fast, doesn t it? This month brings us Thanksgiving, Veterans Day, and more. Did you know it s also the awareness month for prostate and testicular cancer? November has another secret holiday that s popular with the younger crowds. It s called No-Shave November or Movember where men grow out their facial hair to raise the awareness for cancer. My husband, Binod also actively participates for this awareness by growing out his moustache. I am so excited about this month, because on November 8 th it will be a year of working here at Garnett Place. I am truly blessed to a part of such a wonderful place, and to work side by side with such loving and caring people. I will be also traveling to Seattle with my husband in November. My in-laws from Nepal and my sister-in-law from Virginia will be joining us as well so it will be a good family reunion. We will be celebrating our nephew, Yanish s, rice weaning ceremony. Yanish is five months old, so he ll be introduced to solid food for the first time. It is always so exciting in our culture to celebrate these kind of occasion with the family. This is also going to be our first Thanksgiving with the whole family. Overall, this month is all about the celebrations for me. I would like to wish a very happy thanksgiving to all the residents and families. May you all have a wonderful time with your loved ones. I would also like to honor our veterans that have protected our country. Thank you to all of the vets out there for your service. 4 Drink Up and Calm Down H aving a stressful day, need to calm down? Here are five drinks that can help. 1. Drink a glass of milk. It contains tryptophan, which as it is metabolized is converted to mood-boosting serotonin, plus its calcium, magnesium and potassium content may help keep blood pressure down. 2. Drink hot cocoa. Warm liquids raise your body temperature, a feeling we associate with comfort, so it triggers a similar response in our brains. 3. Order black tea instead of coffee. A study by University College London shows that drinking black tea four times a day for six weeks lowered the stress hormone cortisol after a stressful event. 4. Drink green tea. This is packed with theannine, which increases the brain s output of relaxation-inducing alpha waves and reduces the output of tension producing beta waves. 5. Drink a glass of cold water, then go for a walk. The water gets your blood moving and fresh air invigorates by stimulating the endorphins that de-stress you. Referenced from the Reader s Digest. Thank you to our veterans for serving our country. We have many veterans and spouses living in our community and your service has not gone unnoticed. I m really looking forward to our Thanksgiving meal with your families and spending time with my family this holiday season. I am very blessed to work at a such an amazing community. I am very thankful for all of you, since I started working here it feels like I have gained 70+ grandparents. Also, I have officially worked at Garnett Place for one year since October 30th! 5 Greetings Holiday Madness I s the title of Chris Anderson s article making anyone else feel behind on their holiday shopping? If so, don t hesitate to check out the various store trips we offer on Friday afternoons. I will have you note, on Black Friday we will not be having a store trip. We ll go earlier in the week, and that morning we ll visit Fareway. We made these changes to help cut down on the traffic we run into with the Black Friday madness. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding. It may seem early to mention this, but our Christmas decorating day is November 26th, the Monday after Thanksgiving. We could use all the help we can get, as we have around eight different trees to decorate! We hope you ll join us for some holiday fun. Apologies in advance to our housekeepers, for all the glitter. The Ding-A-Lings have a very busy holiday schedule. Starting in November, they currently have over fourteen holiday shows booked. Make sure you get a chance to attend one of their amazing holiday programs! I hope you re looking forward to some of the crazy activities we have planned for November. I heard there s something about turkey races and decorating cupcakes to look like turkeys. Since Uno Club has been incredibly popular, we re expanding it to two groups, beginners and experts. I love getting to spend Thanksgiving with my family. It s our tradition that on the day after Thanksgiving, everyone eats leftovers. Since that leaves the kitchen free, my mother and I make ALL of our holiday cookies. That means we churn out hundreds of cookies in one day (or weekend). It s quite the process, and it gets the whole family involved. We cover every flat surface in the house with wax paper, even the beds, so we have somewhere to cool all of these cookies. When that s done, we ll go drive around and check out all the beautiful holiday light displays. Kari Santos, MA, CTRS Life Enrichment 8 weeks Until the Year End N ovember is here. That means only 8 weeks left in That also means the holiday season is upon us. We have put away the outside patio furniture, and will soon have the salt and sand out. Night time temperatures are dropping below freezing, so please watch for slick sidewalks. Your apartments will also be getting colder, if you notice any problems with your furnace let me know. The water line replacement in the 202 building is done, which I think we will all glad to see. If you have any issues with your water, let me know so we can take corrective action. Once its done, Rod and I will begin working on repairing drywall and covering the pipes in the hallways. Thank you for your patience. Chris Anderson, Maintenance Garnett Place Thanksgiving H ello Garnett Place residents, as we are approaching thanksgiving remember that our thanksgiving meal is November 17 th. If you are wanting to attend with family members make sure you get your reservations in before November 9th. We will be having turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes & gravy, green bean casserole, dinner rolls and an assortment of pies. I hope to see all of you and have the opportunity to meet some of your family members. 6 Wilson s Orchard Walk to End Alzheimer s Photos We had a fabulous time at Wilson s Orchard. We learned all about their orchard, and we tasted several varieties of apples.
