3 February 1-28-Small Steps to Health and Wealth Online Challenge Begins February 1 Are you trying to rescue a failed New Year s resolution? It has been well documented that, when people monitor their behavior and measure how they are doing, they are often inspired to do better and achieve positive results. We are launching an online Challenge called Henry County, KY Small Steps to Health and Wealth. This national four week program is designed to help you improve both your health and personal finance behaviors. It will run for the month of February and is done On-Line. To sign up follow the Chal lenge link available at Register an account by creating a user name and password, and download the simple one-page user s guide with instructions on how to enter a challenge. Enroll in the challenge titled Henry County, KY Small Steps to Health and Wealth. The Challenge is part of a national Cooperative Extension program built around a framework of 25 research-based behavior change strategies. The Challenge is based on the performance of ten recommended daily practices: five that involve health and nutrition and five that involve financial management. Ten points are given for performing each one for a maximum of 700 points per week and 4,200 points for the entire challenge. As participants enter their personal data, they will see their point totals for each day of the week and for each of the ten activities. They ll also see a bar graph that compares their personal progress to the average scores of everyone else participating in the Challenge. Daily motivational messages will also be provided to participants. February 9-County Homemaker Spring Council Meeting: Our spring council meeting will be full as we plan our annual meeting and look toward the future. Please be sure that club officers attend if at all possible. We will meet at 1:30. If the weather is bad please give us a call. We do not cancel just based on the schools as sometimes by that time in the afternoon the roads are clear! February 9-County Homemaker Cultural Arts Exhibit: Our county exhibit will be held at the County Council meeting. Items will be judged on Friday, February 10. Items must be entered by 10 am, on the 10th. You may want to bring your items to the meeting the day before or any time earlier in the week. Doing even one of the ten recommended daily practices is a great way to get started on the path to better health and improved financial security. The more Challenge activities that are performed by participants, the better.

4 Area Homemaker Cultural Arts Contest: February 24 at the John Black Center in Oldham County. Entries are at 9:00 a.m. Maryellen will take our entries over for judging that morning. March 6-April 24-Antique Classes: R.E. Wells, a noted antique authority from Versailles, Kentucky will be hosting the 8 week series at the Spencer County Extension Office. The cost is $60.00 and there are two sessions available on Mondays. One from 1:00-3:00 and the other from 6:30-8:30. The topics are: March 6-Introduction to Antiques March 13-Paperweights March 20-Fine Continental Porcelain March 27-Nineteenth Century Japan April 3-Victorian China April 10-Antique Boxes April 17-Popular Pattern Glass April 24-Antique Road Show Participants may bring one item to be appraised each week. Make checks payable to: Jefferson County Extension Council and return to-jefferson County Extension Service/Valerie Holland at 200 Juneau Drive, Suite 400, Louisville, KY Deadline to register is February 27. March 28: Savvy Sellers Many of us have items in our home that have been kept long beyond their usefulness. These items often clutter our houses while we scratch our heads wondering what to do with them. Many times, clothes, bags, furniture, or odd knick-knacks are still in good condition, yet we no longer have a use for them. This program highlights the difference between yard sales, consignment shops, and thrift stores. It also helps you identify items that could be sold and determine which outlet would be the best fit to sell those personal items. Jane Proctor, Trimble County Extension Agent will teach this program at 1:30 on Tuesday, March 28. This is the club lesson for April but everyone is invited to attend.

5 April 6-Virtual Dementia: The Virtual Dementia Tour which was developed by the founder of Second Wind Dreams is a scientifically proven method of building a greater understanding of dementia through the use of sensory tools and instruction. During the experience, participants are guided through the Tour that alters their senses. Tasks and exercises that are part of the Tour enable caregivers and professionals to experience for themselves the physical and mental challenges facing those with dementia. We have offered this program to the staff at New Castle Nursing and Rehab for the past several years and this year we will be able to open it to the family members and others in the community. It will take you about 30 minutes and you will need to schedule an appointment which will run from 11-2:00. Call the Extension Office for more information. April 28-AARP Safe Driver Class: For those over age 55! This class offers you a discount on your car insurance. To find out how much your discount is you need to contact your insurance carrier. (The discount goes up with age). The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. There is no driving test or written test. The class runs from 12:00 until 4:00 and a light pizza lunch will be provided at 11:30. To register, send your check made out to AARP to us at Box 246, New Castle, KY March 30: Truth and Consequences This is a new 4H/School program designed to help Freshmen students understand the consequences of using drugs or alcohol. We will need about volunteers. As a volunteer you will walk with a student acting as a parent/guardian who will guide them through each booth and help them understand the consequences of actions related to drug and alcohol abuse. A native of East Tennessee, she began working as a dispatcher for the Indiana State Police. Following years of dispatching help to others, Burns found herself on the receiving end of dispatch help when she was involved in a near fatal accident. Burns faced years of reconstructive surgeries, while at the same time she had to accept the total loss of her sight. She began piecing quilts in the year 2000, twelve years after she became totally blind. She is an avid quilt maker who has won many Best of Show ribbons for her work. She is a member of the Highland Homemakers in Washington County, Indiana and a member of several quilt guilds.

7 April 20-Chautauqua Returns-Aunt Molly, Pistol Packin/Woman: Mary Magdalene Garland, later known as Aunt Molly Jackson was involved with coal mining in eastern Kentucky and the conflicts between miners and operators. She was actively pro-union, was a nurse, midwife, and songwriter who visited the homes of the miners and their families. The story goes that she marched into the company store and ordered a sack of groceries. When the clerk handed them over, she told him she would be back to pay the bill, but she had hungry children to feed first. When he tried to stop her, she pulled a.38 Special out of her pocket and backed out the door. This program will be held at 1:30 in the dining room at Twin Oaks Assisted Living. Everyone is welcome but please call the Extension Office to register so we will know how many to expect. Refreshments served after the program. This program was funded in part by the Kentucky Humanities Council, Inc. and the National Endowment for the Humanities. April 28-Travel Safety Know Before You Go: The club lesson for May will be on Travel Safety. Being prepared for any travel makes the trip more enjoyable and safe for everyone. This program will help you complete necessary travel arrangements and be prepared if the unexpected happens. Simple actions can keep you and your property protected while you travel. This program will guide participants in identifying common travel scams, determine personal travel insurance needs, identify safety practices for travel, and much more. Everyone is welcome to attend this program at 1:30 at the Extension Office.
