2 OVERVIEW NOBEL Women is a national non-profit, non-partisan 501 (c)(3) organization originally established in 1985 to increase and promote the presence of black women in government and in corporate leadership. NOBEL-Women is composed primarily of current and former black women legislators and a number of appointed officials. Currently, we represent 238 Black women legislators in 40 of 50 states. As an organization, we have four core objectives. These objectives include: (a) creating programs and platforms that advance black women in the fields of public policy, public service and civic engagement; (b) serving as a network and support system for Black women in public policy and corporate leadership; (c) serving as a medium for thoughtful dialogue on issues of public interest between elected officials and stakeholders; and (d) training and educating a class of cultivated and experienced Black women professionals to assume government and/or corporate leadership roles. MISSION STATEMENT NOBEL-Women is committed to increasing and promoting the presence of Black women in government, nonprofit and corporate leadership through training and development; protecting the public interest of women and families; and supporting policy initiatives that contribute to the enhancement and sustainability of the Black community. The NOBEL-Women Annual Legislative Conference provides a Black woman s perspective on public policy with thought-provoking and educational conversations among leaders, the community and stakeholders. Hundreds of attendees from across the country and around the world attend this four-day conference to learn about the challenges and opportunities facing black America. The NOBEL-Women ALC provides the platform for collaboration and policy development to occur among national, state and local leaders and their constituents. We have worked to achieve this goal by ensuring that we provide educational forums, leadership training and development opportunities for black women throughout the country who are ready to lead. 11 HOTEL ACCOMMODATION INFORMATION How To Reserve Your Room Hotel reservations should be telephoned directly to the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino Reservation Department at or Registrants should identify their reservation in affiliation with NOBEL-Women. Check-In: 3:00pm Check-Out: 11:00 am Room Rate: $175/night* *Room Rates vary between $159-$189/per night, plus a resort fee of $9.00 and tax. Rooms are available on a first-come basis. Each attendee is responsible for making their own hotel arrangements. Conference room rates are only guaranteed with block availability until Thursday, May 29, Rates cannot be changed at check-in or check-out for guests who fail to identify their affiliation at time of registration. Registrants should submit a credit card or a deposit equal to the first night s room/suite rate, plus resort fee and tax as a guarantee at the time of hotel reservation. Room reservations not guaranteed will be automatically canceled by the Hotel within fourteen (14) days of the reservation date. Refunds will be issued on individual reservations if canceled at least forty-eight (48) hours in advance of the confirmed arrival date. All guaranteed reservations will be held until 6:00 am only on the day after confirmed date of arrival. Lois DeBerry (TN) Description Named in honor of NOBEL-Women Co-Founder and former National Vice President, the late Representative Lois DeBerry of Tennessee, the Rep. Lois DeBerry Memorial Conference Scholarship is available for paid members of NOBEL Women who are interested in attending our annual legislative meeting in Biloxi, Mississippi at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino. Amount To be determined Eligibility To be eligible applicants must: In 2013, the National Organization of Black Elected Legislative Women (NOBEL-Women) lost one of its most influential and inspirational leaders, Representative Lois DeBerry of Memphis, Tennessee to an on-going battle with pancreatic cancer. Representative Lois DeBerry diligently served Tennessee s 91st District for more than 40 years. DeBerry was elected as the first African American female to serve in the State Legislature from the city of Memphis in 1972 and began service in the legislature in 1973, making her the second African American woman in the history of Tennessee to serve in its State Legislature. DeBerry was co-founder and former National Vice President of the National Organization of Black Elected Legislative Women.
