2 I hope you will join me on December 4 to help recognize an extraordinary group of business leaders Meredith Anderson, Sean Armstead, Mary Clare Bonaccorsi, Nicole Pecoulas and Lauren Wulf who are partnering with young people from our city s poorest communities to create a more inclusive Chicago. Every day, our dedicated All Stars team brings together young people from Chicago neighborhoods including Englewood, Austin, Bronzeville and North Lawndale with caring adults from our business community. In our Afterschool Development programs, everyone is supported to leave their comfort zone and create something new together. I am inspired daily by the transformational impact this has for the young people whose lives are constrained by poverty and for the adults who see how they can build developmental relationships with Chicago s youth. One need only pick up a newspaper to be reminded of the challenges we face as a city and they are many. But whether it s on the streets of south and west side Chicago or in the corporate suites of downtown, I have met thousands of caring adults including business, faith-based, cultural and education leaders who are choosing hope over cynicism by creating opportunities for the youngest of our poor to shape, not only their future, but the future of our city. The All Stars is honored to recognize Meredith, Sean, Mary, Nicole and Lauren for their deeply felt commitment to making new things happen for our young people, and for stepping up as champions of our campaign to establish a Center for Afterschool Development in the heart of downtown Chicago. While the All Stars will always go into the poorest neighborhoods because that s where our young people are, the Center will give everyone who believes in change for Chicago a space where we can come together to create social development and economic opportunity. The All Stars Project is brilliantly using the concept of performance as a strategy for development, transforming the lives of young people living in some of the poorest communities across the country. We hear a lot about income inequality and how the poor are having real problems generating traction to escape poverty. The All Stars Project is a critical lifeline for young people from poor and working class backgrounds to gain exposure to the broader business and economic world. The goal is to help these kids see real and tangible possibilities for themselves. In my view, it s time for those who fortune has favored to step up. If we don t reach out to these young people and give them an opportunity to connect to the mainstream, who will? THE HONORABLE SONIA SOTOMAYOR Associate Justice, Supreme Court of the United States There are a few causes that motivate me, that keep me excited about being a judge, and about being a human being. The [Development School for Youth] is one of those programs As I am growing older, and as I hope to continue making contributions to developing my society, I realize that it s meaningless unless the generation that follows me picks up the battle and continues it. And the battle is to be better citizens, to be better family members, to be better friends, community members, and to give back to our society and make it better for everyone. This program, I believe, does that.

4 ALL STARS PROJECT, INC. Founded in 1981, the 100% privately funded All Stars Project involves over 20,000 young people annually in Chicago, New York City, Dallas, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Newark and Jersey City, New Jersey. In Chicago, the All Stars Project has reached more than 35,000 young people and families since 2007 in neighborhoods hardest hit by violence, including Englewood, Gage Park, North Lawndale, Little Village and Austin, with the opportunity to participate in its free Afterschool Development programs: The All Stars Talent Show Network involves young people ages 5 25 in producing and performing in hip-hop talent shows in their neighborhoods. Everyone who auditions makes the show. Hundreds of community members come out to each show to volunteer and cheer every performer on stage. In the Development School for Youth (DSY), young people learn to perform in business settings through leadership training and paid summer internships in partnership with caring executives in Chicago s business community. In 2016, All Stars Project of Chicago launched a 5-year $14 million campaign to establish a Center for Afterschool Development in the heart of downtown Chicago. Modeled after All Stars centers in NYC (Times Square) and Newark, New Jersey (downtown arts district) the Chicago center will serve as a hub to connect youth from the south and west sides to each other, to caring adults who are their partners in growth, and to the city s success. It will be home for everyone who wants to bring performance and development to our city. More than $6.5 million has already been raised, entirely through private sources.
