EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR COMMENTS Annually the Board of Health reviews the Strategic Plan and progress on the goals set. Representatives from the Advisory Boards attend this meeting. This year Megan Andrews will be attending to represent Environmental Health Advisory Board. At last month s meeting this board had discussions on things that have an impact on our community and received information on the Appreciative Inquiry/Health Equity. Next month a final report will be presented. A Needs Assessment Survey for community stakeholders was distributed. This is required by our federal partners. Board members were asked to fill out survey and leave face down on the table. V. RESILIENCE TO ADVERSE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE & SEVERE WEATHER STEVE CURATTI Mr. Curatti reviewed a power point presentation (see attached) on progress on the BRACE (Building Resilience Against Climate Effect) program. Applied for grant two years ago purpose is to build resilience to effects of weather. We will be starting the third year of the grant. All units are involved in the grant deliverables. Several vulnerabilities were defined: Flood, tornado, respiratory (asthma/copd), vector borne illness, increased heat and cold, psychological duress, polluted water. First year of grant the program was introduced to the public. Priorities originally chosen were mental health well-being, vector borne illness and chronic respiratory disease. After first year added water scarcity, water conservation and skin cancer. Thirty-seven ticks were submitted to the University of Massachusetts for testing and 41% tested positive for Lyme disease. Staff collected these ticks at area forest preserves Reviewed ways we are increasing awareness of chronic respiratory disease and mental health stress impact. In year three: -Will continue mentoring Whiteside County Health Department on their programs for BRACE. -Residents can upload a picture of a tick on our web page to be identified by staff. -Seasonal safety bags will continue to be available Environmental Health Advisory Board February 13, 2018 Page 1
