6 Blessings Beyond Expectation in Community August Merker and his wife had been a part of a Crossroads Small Group for two and a half years when Be The Church, an all-hands-on-deck service weekend at Crossroads, was about to start. This event offered service opportunities for August and his Small Group to be involved beyond the walls of Crossroads. The leaders of the Small Group discussed projects that would be the right fit and reach out into the community. They got the chance for a connection to bless a single Mom. The Small Group planned to attend to some needs in her home by taking care of some yard care and housework for her and her children, including a new baby. August and his Small Group planned to finish getting the home ready for the newborn by decorating the nursery, putting together some furniture, and building a closet. The mom was apprehensive to accept help from the Small Group, and felt undeserving of their offer to help her due to some anxiety she had about her family situation. However, the leaders of the Small Group assured her that they just wanted to serve. It did not matter what her story was. They desired to show her God s love. The leaders of the Small Group asked August to head up this specific service project in their absence. August recounted his unsettled feelings about being asked to lead for the first time, I didn t know what I was getting myself into. I wasn t ready to lead in that way. Through God s nudge, August willingly followed through and guided the Small Group in their efforts to assist this Mom and her children, and was even the last person to leave that day after some difficulties with hardware sent him in search of parts to complete the task. I went to a few hardware stores to find stuff to complete the closet because I didn t want to leave anything unfinished, but I finished much later than I was supposed to, he shared. At the time I was pretty frustrated and didn t feel like the projects turned out to be as smooth and helpful as I had hoped. Shortly following the service project, the leaders of the Small Group excitedly told August that his group s faith in action had not gone unnoticed. This single Mom was taken aback by the Small Group s generosity and August realized the positive impact he and the other Small Group members had made. In extending their time and service, the Mother was able to have a furnished, freshly put together nursery for her baby and her outdoor area revamped. She could not have been more appreciative of the group s efforts. The impact continued, as he was just recently made aware of the amazing transformation God brought about in this young Mom s life. She had reunited with her family and together they began attending Crossroads Hampstead shortly after the campus launched. This Mom is now taking on the next step of becoming a Small Group leader and carrying on the ministry that meant so much to her and her family. This awesome change all started with a simple service project. August was blown away by the power of God and how He had used him to make a difference. God took a frustrating situation that didn t go as planned, that I wasn t prepared for and made it good. Made it His. I was the most irritated in the midst of it all, but the most surprised with what God did through it, he stated. God brings blessings through our involvement in community and through connections like Small Groups. It s not about the amount of people gathering, or about the actual task being accomplished, but the willingness to do something together for someone else.

7 Small Groups Sunday, Aug. 20th between services Growing spiritually means becoming more like Christ. One great way to do that is having intentional relationships with people who have the same goal, like in a Small Group. Groups meet 2-3 times each month to pursue spiritual growth and healthy relationships. You will build lasting friendships, care for each other, serve together, grow spiritually, and have a ton of fun. You can meet Small Group leaders in the lobby before and after each service at our Grouplink event Sunday, August 20th. We want you to find a Small Group that fits with your life space and schedule. We hope you will take this Next Step - Life Is Better Together Monday Care Nights Various Groups ~ Westminster Begins Monday, September 11th 6:30-8pm Save the date for Monday Care Nights!
