4 JANUARY 2011 SAMAJ DARSHAN: A GUJARATI SAMAJ OF DETROIT PUBLICATION Page 4 GSY 2011 It s the beginning of a new year for GSY, and already they ve had successful events that are worth remembering. Before the New Year, GSY had gone and participated at Focus Hope, like they have done in the past years, but had a new experience this time around. Instead of packaging food into boxes, they packaged boxes into cars. And this definitely wasn t the easiest job. Running into a few difficulties with the weight of the boxes and the weather, in the end, they were able to supply boxes of food to 700 families, and this would not have been possible without the help of the generous parents who took their time to bring GSY to Focus Hope and even help distribute boxes. Even the weather wasn t able to stop GSY from making a difference. After a wonderful Christmas break and New Year s, GSY did something completely new, that they hadn t done in past years. This year, GSY held a lock-in with JOY at the Holy Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church. Starting at 8:00 pm on Friday, January 14 th, GSY and JOY bonded with each other till 8:00 am on Saturday, January 15 th. Both GSY and JOY were separated from their own groups and put into groups with other GSY and JOY members they didn t know too well, and throughout the night spent time to get to know these new faces. Throughout those 12 hours together, GSY and JOY boards had put together activities that required teamwork, but also kept a fun and welcoming atmosphere for all. With wonderful help from the parent chaperones, everything stayed organized and everyone got home safe the next morning. GSY board is extremely happy with the outcome and feedback of the lock-in and is even happier to see their GSY members broaden their horizons to get to know new people. Along with all these activities, GSY and JOY are still thinking about others, by collecting old clothing that members brought in and spending these clothes to a charity in Gujarat. After such a successful event, GSY is looking forward to working with JOY again in the near future. As of now, GSY is working hard towards their annual Valentine s Dance. Tickets have been distributed between members and sales have already started for the dance, on February 4 th from 7:00-11:00 pm at Club Inferno. GSY is also started to occupy themselves in Holi Program plans and getting ready to have another remarkable performance at Holi Program, like their past years.
