Perry, M.D., Ph.D and Ira J. Chasnoff, M.D. Ventura County Key Policy Makers Dialogue with Bruce Perry, M.D., Ph.D and Ira J. Chasnoff, M.D. Bruce Perry, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Bruce Perry is the Senior Fellow of the ChildTrauma Academy, a not-for-profit organization which promotes innovations in service, research and education in child maltreatment and childhood trauma ( He is a renowned teacher, clinician and researcher in childrens mental health, and has done extensive research on the long-term effects of neglect and trauma in children, adolescents and adults. His work has been instrumental in describing how childhood experiences, including neglect and traumatic stress, change the biology of the brain, and thereby, the health of a child. His work has greatly impacted how systems (such as child protective services, mental health, education and juvenile justice) respond to families experiencing trauma. Dr. Perry is the author of over 200 journal articles, book chapters and scientific proceedings and is the recipient of numerous professional awards and honors. Ira J. Chasnoff, M.D. KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Dr. Ira J. Chasnoff is President of the Children s Research Triangle ( and a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He is one of the nation s leading researchers in the field of maternal drug use during pregnancy and the effects on the newborn infant and child. His research projects include a study of the long-term cognitive, behavioral and educational developmental effects of prenatal exposure to alcohol, cocaine, and other drugs and the effects on birth outcome of prenatal treatment and counseling for pregnant drug abusers. His current work focuses on community approaches to the integration of behavioral health services into primary health care for women and children. Dr. Chasnoff is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Society for Pediatric Research and the Society for Research in Child Development and is the author of five books and numerous articles on the effects of drug use on pregnancy and on the long-term cognitive, behavioral, and learning outcomes of prenatally exposed children. DAY TWO GOALS This conference is designed to educate physicians, nurses, primary care providers, MFTs, LCSWs, other professionals, and caregivers on the impact of family violence and perinatal substance abuse on families, the development of children and the communities that serve them.
