1 Hill District Center for Nurturing Families UPCOMING EVENTS PITTSBURGH ZOO & PPG AQUARIUM Thursday, June 16 th 11:00AM 3:00PM Come join us for a field trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium. This will be a fun and educational time for the children as they learn about the different animals. You will need to bring lunch or purchase it at the Zoo. A bus has been reserved so it will be on a first come first serve basis. May 2016 *There is a $5.00 deposit if you plan to attend and it must be paid by Friday, June 10 th. FAMILY SOCIAL EVENT Tuesday, June 21st 9:00AM 4:00PM The Parent Council in conjunc- tion with the center is hosting a Family Social Event at Family Resources Retreat Center in Mars, Pa. There will be many activities such as swimming, catch & release pond, kickball, three-legged race, hula hoops, bubbles, just to name a few. You will have a chance to win prizes with some of the games and we will raffle off some special gifts. We will provide a morning snack and lunch. To be eligible for this event, you must be an active participant in the center. *A deposit of $5.00 is required and must be paid by Monday, June 13 th. PIRATE GAME Monday, June 20 th 7:05pm The Hill District Center for Nurturing Families in conjunction with the Fatherhood Collaborative Council will be attending a baseball game (Pittsburgh Pirates VS San Francisco Giants). This is a special event for Fathers and their children so please contact Kenneth Strother at by June 10th if you are interested in attending. 2 NURTURING FATHERS Thursdays, May 5 th, 19 th & 26th 11:00AM 1:00PM The Nurturing Father s Program was created to cultivate and support the attitudes and skills for male nurturance, hoping to benefit men, women and children in family relationships. The program utilizes an experiential learning model, which provides activities that ultimately thinking and feelings in a supportive group atmosphere. If you are interested in joining Mr. Ken, facilitator and other fathers, for the Nurturing Father s Program, please contact him. PARENT COUNCIL Tuesday, May 10 th 10:00AM 12:30PM CENTER PROGRAMMING We had a wonderful Mini Training Series last month on Live Well Allegheny. Sheila Beasley from the Office of Child Development will continue this month with the Mini Series on Governance using Family Support Governance and Leadership Resources. Sheila will share information on fine tuning parent councils to ensure that: (1) Meetings are empowering; (2) Meetings are a great way to communicate; (3) Meetings develop work skills and leadership; and (4) Meetings are morale boosting. Parent Leader, Cachet and staff Latashia attended the trip to Harrisburg on April 19 th so we are excited to have them share information on that experience. John, Darla and Cachet will also give an update from the last Community Voices Meeting. We will continue with our planning for the family social event in June. We hope that you will join us for the training and event planning. If you are available to attend, please contact the center by Monday, May 9th CUDDLE TIME Wednesday, May 11 th 10:00AM 12:00PM Topic: Gross Motor Skills The next session for Cuddle Time will focus on gross motor skills. We will talk about the benefits of gross motor and some activities for your infant. You will make a toy that can be used to assist in the development of your infant s gross motor skills. Please RSVP to attend this program by Monday, May 9th. FAMILY FUN NIGHT Friday, May 20 th 5:00PM 7:00PM Our Family Fun Night will be focused on Bears. We will feature the book, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. You will also create your own bear mask and go on a bear hunt. You have to come and see what the bear hunt is like and what else might be in store for you. Dinner will be served so please RSVP by Tuesday, May 17 th. 2

3 MY PARENT & ME Wednesday, May 25 th 10:00AM 12:00PM During this group, we will have various activities on the book Touch and Feel Animal Colors. There will be game that focus on sorting the animals by color, connect animals to the type of home they live in and you will have an opportunity to make an animal. Each family in attendance will receive a copy of the book. We hope that you can join us for this interactive play group. Please RSVP by Monday, May 23 rd. Your will hear information about the parents trip to Harrisburg. Please contact the center to attend this meeting. We will provide transportation. This is a great opportunity to meet other parents, see other family support centers and to be a part of the family support network. 3

4 Family Resources offers free PARENTING CLASSES for expectant parents and families with children birth through 18 years old that reside in Allegheny County. Utilizing the evidenced based Nurturing Parent Curriculum, a program with over 25 years of research recognized as one of the top parenting programs in the country designed for the treatment and prevention of child abuse and neglect. Parents learn how to replace old unwanted abusive parenting patterns for more caring, nurturing ones. Certificate of Completion is provided to all enrolled participants after successful completion of the 15 week series. 5 WHAT: Mission of Mercy (MOM-n-PA) The (MOM-n-PA) is a large-scale dental clinic where dental treatment is provided at no cost to individuals who cannot afford dental care. Treatment is provided first-come, first-served and it is expected that several hundred individuals will be attending this year's event, so please come early! Patients do not preregister. WHEN: Friday, June 3 & Saturday, June 4, 2016 Come early! Patients will be lining up starting Thursday evening. No appointments will be taken or are necessary. Patients are seen on a first come - first serve basis. The number of patients seen will be limited to up to 1,000 patients per day. Once the total number of patients we can see each day have been registered, no additional patients can be seen. Please be prepared to wait several hours for service. WHERE: David L. 6 SANCTUARY THEME Emotional Intelligence Emotional Intelligence - One of the Seven Commitments The ability to perceive accurately, appraise, and express emotions; to access and/or generate feelings when they facilitate thought; the ability to understand emotions and emotional knowledge; and the ability to regulate emotions so as to promote emotional and intellectual growth Mayer, J.D. and P. Salovey, What is emotional intelligence?, in Emotional Development and Emotional Intelligence: Educational Implications, (p.10). As this definition suggests, emotions play a significant role in our ability to think and evaluate as well as determining the nature of our relationships with others. But we can help ourselves and each other When people are in a certain mood, whether elated or depressed, that mood is often communicated to others. When we are talking to someone who is depressed it may make us feel depressed, whereas if we talk to someone who is feeling self-confident and buoyant we are likely to feel good about ourselves. This phenomenon, known as emotional contagion Emotional Contagion by Hatfield, Cacioppo and Rapson 6

7 ENVISION HEALTHY EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE Emotions are recognized as an important component of thought and it is universally understood that our emotions help us to value what is important in life when rational thought alone may betray us. Emotions are always considered as a part of solving problems, individually and collectively. Homes, schools, workplaces and communities are safe, secure, reliable, playful, loving and compassionate because we understand that people are better able to learn to manage their emotions and work effectively in such environments. Everyone learns ways in which their emotions can be manipulated by others and are therefore able to adequately protect themselves. Parents and leaders understand that a key part of their job is to recognize, contain and manage emotions in their homes, organizations and communities. 7
