1 The Moonshine The Official Newsletter of the Cho-Gun-Mun-A-Nock Lodge 467 February 2018 Vice Chief of BSA Affairs Theodore Collins Associate Lodge Advisor of BSA Affairs Sarah Harris Brothers, My name is Theodore Collins and I am your 2018 Vice-Chief of BSA Affairs. I have been in Boy Scouts since 2010, and have been a member of the lodge since the fall of I became an Eagle Scout in August I have worked at Howard H. Cherry Scout Reservation for the past four summers, and will be coming back again this summer. My only major involvement in the lodge up to this point has been participating in summer call-out ceremonies, attending a few lodge events, serving as an Elangomat, and being a co-chairman for the 2017 Fall Fellowship Planning Committee. I ran for lodge positions because I wanted to have more youth involvement this upcoming year by using different strategies. Parent informational meetings and outreach events to attract new Elangomats are just a couple of ways this can be done. One thing is for sure, I do my best to serve my chairman in the BSA committee. At the January and February LEC meetings I gave a challenge to each of my chairman for them to work on through the year. Spring Fellowship is just around the corner and the sign-up will soon be live on the lodge s website. OA Troop Reps, it is time to start spreading the date, March 9-11, with your units. If you want to help staff or be a trainer contact the activities chairman or lodge chief for more information. I also invite you to attend the LEC meeting after the Spring Fellowship. This is the quickest way to get involved and to know what is going on with the lodge Theodore Cho-Gun-Mun-A-Nock Lodge Members The Lodge Executive Council is sincerely trying to use our financial resources wisely. We have determined to reduce one expense by reducing the number of Moonshine newsletters printed and mailed. Our goal is to send the Moonshine to your primary address on file starting with the summer issue (likely after Spring Conclave). If you desire to still receive a printed/mailed Moonshine, please mail us a postcard so we can retain that information on file. The postcard should be sent to: Cho-Gun-Mun-A-Nock Lodge, Hawkeye Area Council Attn: Lodge Secretary nd Ave SW Cedar Rapids, IA If your household receives multiple copies of the Moonshine and still wants to receive a printed Moonshine, we will automatically reduce your household to one printed copy. Thank you for helping us financially sustain our lodge with this initiative. Sincerely, Sarah Harris Associate Lodge Adviser of BSA Affairs
2 Publications Chairman Mitchell Anderson Report from the 2017 OA National Planning Meeting I traveled to Texas the last week of December to take part in the 2017 OA NPM. The focus of this conference was the planning of the 2018 National Order of the Arrow Conference, being held July 30-August 4 at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. The theme was also announced; it will be Decide Your Destiny. Section and region chiefs are working hard to integrate the theme into the conference. Several hurricanes devastated the southeastern United States this past fall; this included Boy Scout property. In response, the Order of the Arrow has organized two events this March to help the recovery effort. The first will be Sea- Break, hosted by the Southern Region. It will take place March Arrowmen who attend this will be helping repair Sea Base, Camp Sawyer, and Big Munson Island. The next week, Section NE-5 will host the Puerto Rico Arrowcorps, taking place March at Camp Guajataka, Puerto Rico. Participants will help rebuild the camp. The best part of these events? Chief Scout Executive Mike Surbaugh has committed to pay for all program fees, so the only out-of-pocket cost will be transportation to and from the events. Consider serving your fellow brothers this spring break! Ben Eden and Matt Lorenzen pictured on the right, recognized for Black Crescent Exemplary Service Award Joe Podzimek and Jacob Lorenzen Pictured at the left, recognized for the Founders Award Dear Arrowmen, I hope that last year had been filled with great memories and learning opportunities, which I hope that the OA has influenced a little. Last year brought great things to your lodge. For example, we have sold a tremendous amount of our inventory, which is still occurring. We also have two things that were addressed during LLDC, which hopefully bring insight to how the LEC runs a budget and bring you a new item to purchase. I would like to first inform you that the Moonshine has been brought to the attention of LEC members, and they have voted to put the Moonshine on the website. Reasoning behind this is to reduce the lodges cost for our budget for this next fiscal year. Trends have shown that technology is becoming more popular and the cost of printing and mailing the Moonshine rising, it was decided that it would be more appropriate to put the Moonshine on the Lodge s website. Lastly, I would like to announce that it have been approved by the LEC to have a lodge fleece and polo available for purchasing. To purchase one of these, members will need to make a pre-order and pre-pay for the item. There will be two examples hanging in the lodge house for viewing. If you have any more questions about this, feel free to the trading post chairman or their adviser and/or treasurer chairman or their adviser. It has been a pleasure to be your 2017 Lodge Treasurer. I will be your 2018 Publications Chairman. Don t be a stranger, always say hi, and never hesitate to ask me questions! WWW Mitchell
3 Awards and Rec Chairman Keaton Stokes Awardsand Lodge Secretary Ben Eden The Awards and Rec Committee would like to thank all those who nominated people for this years awards. Congratulations to the following 2017 award winners: Founders Award: Joe Podzimek and Jacob Lorenzen; James E. West Fellowship Award: Curt Morrison; Arrowmen of the Year: Josh Cheatum for Old Capital Valley, Jacob Lorenzen for Three Rivers, and Clint Hill for Red Cedar Red Arrow Award: Kathy Waterman Black Crescent Exemplary Service Award: Matt Lorenzen and Ben Eden The Awards and Rec Committee will be accepting applications for the Black Crescent scholarships which awards two $500 scholarships to be given out at Spring Fellowship. I am Patrick Conway and I am the new Three Rivers Chapter Chief. Our chapter campout was great. We spent the morning doing work for camp, made regalia, and watched movies in the afternoon. The District Arrow of Light ceremony will be March 24th, and we need arrowmen to help work stations and to perform in the ceremony. Please RSVP to trchapterchief@chogun.org if you are able to help. Finally, I am setting a challenge to our chapter. If we have the largest youth contingent at Spring Fellowship then the chapter adviser, Matt Lorenzen, will bring pizza to the April chapter meeting. Patrick Conway Three Rivers Chapter Chief Patrick Conway TRChapterChief@ChoGun.org Brothers, First off, Congratulations to our newest Vigil members! We had two successful Vigil weekends. Thanks to everyone who came out and attended to make these weekends go smoothly. Congratulations to everyone who received awards at Winter Banquet! Thanks to our amazing caterer! It was amazing food as always. We are officially into 2018 and it will be a very busy year Jacob can use any help he can get. We need people to help with our Section Conclave as well as our LEC. If you are interest, send him an at LodgeChief@chogun.org As I hinted above, Chogun will be hosting the Section C-3A Conclave this year. We need all areas, help people find their way around camp, kitchen staff and many other positions. If help. Paul Swanson is helping facilitate this event, so if you have any comments, concerns or can help in any way, please send him an or give him a call. Like every Spring, we have Spring Fellowship coming up. If you have any training cells you would like to see or run, send the Activities Committee an at Activities@chogun.org. Inductions will be looking for people to go through their Elangomat Training cell to get ready for next Conclave. Don t forget that every Saturday is a Camp Workday. Call Ranger Josh (319) if you plan to attend so that he can feed you lunch. Lastly we have NOAC this year! If you are interested, but can t go in the contingent, go as staff! It is an amazing event. If you are unable to attend NOAC, please consider attending Mini NOAC in Dubuque, hosted by our Lodge I m Looking forward to an amazing year with many new faces and many new memories! Let s make it a good one! Ben
4 Inductions Chairman Caleb Brandauer Brothers, In the last Moonshine, I highly encouraged the new ordeals who are able to, attend the Fall Fellowship. It s a great way to get introduced into the Order of the Arrow. As you are aware, the LEC had recently approved of a third brotherhood conversion opportunity. At the Fall Fellowship on November 4th, we had 20 new ordeals in attendance, and 9 ordeals complete their Brotherhood, which is only one less than during our conclave! I would like to congratulate our new Brotherhood members! At our upcoming Spring Fellowship, there will lots of things to see and do. One of which is the Elangomat training. You remember your Ordeal, right? Remember your Brothers who were there to help you during this experience? They chose to help you by sharing your Ordeal with you, didn t they? Well, the Ordeal candidates need you! The Lodge needs you! The future Ordeal candidates need your experience and help in their Ordeal, and we need Elangomats. If you haven t been an Elangomat, you can take the Elangomatting class at Spring Fellowship. I highly recommend that anyone who would want to be an Elangomat to take this class. And, if you like getting all those beads for your log chain, you can get the WHITE Elangomat Bead! By taking the class, and being a Elangomat during a conclave. Just like being an Elangomat, the bead doesn t end there; you need at least 33% of your clan to come back within a year to complete their brotherhood. The white bead is a fairly rare bead, and for a good reason. It can be difficult to stay in touch with your clan to encourage them to come to the events, and to work to get to brotherhood. I personally have never attended a conclave as general membership. I have always either been an Ordeal Candidate, Elangomat, or Chairmen of Inductions. It s really fun to help Ordeal Candidates with their ordeal, and I d recommend it for everyone. I am looking forward to seeing YOU there! Caleb If you have not heard our Lodge will be hosting this years Section Conclave on September 14th-17th This is a fantastic opportunity for all of our lodge members to attend and have fun and come together in fellowship with other lodges in our section. There will be trainings, games, competitions, shows, Pow Wow, and of course great food. We are also asking since we are the Host Lodge that if you can help out in areas for a short time please consider doing so, This is a wonderful opportunity to have our lodge shine in the Section. If you are interested please Paul Swanson at pswanson@goodwill.org Josh Cheatum with Sarah Harris, Jacob Lorenzen with Matt Lorenzen, and Clint Hill with Bill Schlotfelt pictured above, recognized for Arrowmen of the year Above: LEC Youth Below: LEC Adults Thank you for your year of service! 7 Native American Events Chairman Jonathan Schlotfelt OCV Chapter Chief Mason Erger Fellow Arrowmen Please join us at Spring Fellowship for our Pow- Wow. This is open to dancers of all skill levels and is a great opportunity for beginners to learn. We will have competition for every skill level. Prior to the Pow-Wow, there will be a basic dance class offered so you can join the fun. The Pow-Wow begins Saturday night about 7pm and is open to the public. There will also be classes in the morning for those interested in being on Ceremonies teams. Some of the topics that will be covered are memorization techniques, symbolism, and regalia building. Ceremonies are extremely important because they give our new members their first message of what it means to be an Arrowman! We hope you join us for a great weekend of fun and fellowship! Jonathan Arrowmen, In six months we will have two events going on at the same time, NOAC and Mini-NOAC. All of the spaces are full for NOAC, but you still have time to register for Mini-NOAC. You can register here: Check out the Mini-NOAC Facebook page for more information about this exciting event: Arrow In seven months we will be hosting the C3A Section Conclave. This will be an awesome event held at HHCSR! We are the host lodge. We can use lots of people for staff; if you are interested, contact Paul Swanson. Yours in Service, Ben National Events Chairman Ben Alden NationalEvents@ChoGun.org Greetings fellow arrowmen! I hope that you all had a Happy Holiday season. I will be serving this year alongside Gibson Lowenberg, the Vice-Chief of BSA Affairs, and Sam Baily, the Vice-Chief of OA Affairs. With the new Year upon us, I thought I would take this time to remind you all of our big events coming up. First order of business, Spring Fellowship and Spring Conclave are March and May I know they seem like a long ways off but now is the time to start thinking about them. By attending our monthly chapter meetings you will be ready for these events. WWW Mason My Brothers, I m working on writing a history of the events of our lodge that took place in If anyone has feedback for me about the OA events that occurred or suggestions of things that I should include I would find that very helpful. I will hopefully be able to finish and share it with the membership of the Lodge in a Moonshine after the first of the year. This Spring Conclave we will be having a Broken Arrow ceremony. This ceremony is for Gary McClure Troop 100 and Chad Holden Troop 227. I hope you all will be able to come to this ceremony. On the topic of conclave, we will need drummers for the Heartbeat. If you don t know how to drum, but you are interested in learning you can contact me. We would like the drum to start before the ordeals arrive, so we need volunteers starting Friday at 5pm. If you are interested in drumming, or giving me your feedback about the events this year me at my lodge Ethan Traditions Chairman Ethan Brandauer Traditions@ChoGun.org
