3 The Danger of Pain Medication and the Signs of Addiction Connie Robinson, LICDC, MPA, ICADA, CCJS, MA Cleveland Clinic Foundation August 11, :00 AM - 4:00 PM Entry/Intermediate Level Must have CDCA/SWA or Higher Credential 5.5 RCHS PVN-CP 5.5 CPE Provider #RCS FEE: $45 This workshop comprehensively explores the risks of prescription drug use. Some prescription drugs save lives, some control everything a person does (including regulating breathing and heart rate, movement, cognitive thoughts and emotions), and many create unwanted side effects (illness, toxicity and death.) Prescription drugs are extremely difficult to control without professional assistance. By studying addiction and understanding the pharmacological effects of opiod agonist, professionals can identify drug craving and other compulsive behaviors. Professionals will come away with a more complete knowledge of the early warning signs of an addiction to prescription pain medication and where to go for help. Working With Adolescent Girls and Young Women: Two-Day Workshop Tonya Birney, BA, LCDC II, OCPS-I Training Officer, ADAMHS Board August 17 & 18, 2010 (Must Attend Both Days) 9:00 AM 4:30 PM (Foundation II- Prevention of Chemical Use/Abuse Dependency) (Prevention Domain II- Education and Skill Development) (Prevention Domain V - Professional Growth & Responsibility) Entry/Intermediate Level Must have CDCA/SWA or Higher Credential 12 RCHS PVN--CP 12 CPE Provider #RCS FEE: $90 Designed to build awareness of the unique factors, cultural perspectives and potential circumstances that put adolescent girls and young women at risk for substance abuse, this is an in-depth look at gender-specific resources, approaches and techniques to effectively work with this target population. Integrated Dual Disorders Treatment Christina Delos Reyes, MD Chief Clinical Officer, ADAMHS Board September 13, :00PM - 4:15PM 3 RCHS PVN-CD 3 CPE Provider #RCS FEE: $25 Integrated Dual Disorders Treatment (IDDT) is an evidence-based practice which has been studied for over 20 years. While some agencies and clinicians have embraced and implemented this model, there are still those who are just beginning to learn about IDDT. This training will provide an overview of the ten principles of IDDT and will also explain the organizational and treatment components of the model. Additionally, variations of the model will be discussed (including an inpatient adaptation) and data from Ohio s efforts to implement IDDT will be presented. IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND A WORKSHOP FOR WHICH YOU ARE CONFIRMED, PLEASE CALL ADAMHS BOARD TRAINING OFFICER TONYA BIRNEY AT (216) Participants who were denied admission to a closed workshop will be placed on a waiting list and granted admission in the event of a cancellation. Wait-listed individuals will be contacted in the order in which the requests were received.

4 Understanding Craving Richard Romaniuk, PhD, LISW, LICDC The Louis Stokes Cleveland Veteran Affairs Medical Center September 16, :00 AM 4:30 PM Entry/Intermediate Level Must have CDCA/SWA or Higher Credential 6 RCHS PVN-C 6 CPE Provider #RCS FEE: $45 Medication Treatments for Mental Illness and Addiction Christina Delos Reyes, MD Chief Clinical Officer, ADAMHS Board September 27, :00PM - 4:15 PM 3 RCHS PVN-CD 3 CPE Provider #RCS FEE: $25 One of the biggest mysteries of addiction is the uncontrollable desire for a drink in spite of the obvious negative consequences of alcohol consumption. Understanding the brain processes leading to self-destructive behavior seems to be a key factor in choosing the most appropriate treatment for the afflicted individual. This workshop will give you tools specific to the psychobiology of craving to help individuals battle substance dependency. Medications are commonly used in the treatment of mental illness. Recently, several medications have been developed for the treatment of substance use disorders. This training will provide information about the medications most commonly used to treat both mental illnesses and substance use disorders. Information about each medication will include mechanism of action, indications, and adverse side effects. Because so many individuals have co-occurring mental illnesses and addictions, there will be a focused discussion on interactions between medications and substances of abuse and strategies to deal with medication nonadherence. ADAMHS PROVIDER AGENCIES ONLY The Proof is in the Pudding: Drug Abuse, Addiction, and the Adolescent Brain Tonya Birney, BA, LCDC II, OCPS-I Training Officer, ADAMHS Board September 21, :00 AM 4:30 PM (Foundation II- Prevention of Chemical Use/Abuse Dependency) (Prevention Domain II- Education and Skill Development) Entry/Intermediate Level Must have CDCA/SWA or Higher Credential 6 RCHS PVN-CP 6 CPE Provider #RCS FEE: $45 Recent research findings on brain development call the adolescent brain a work in progress. The areas of the brain that are last to develop are those responsible for decision making, impulse control, learning, and memory. Because teen brains are not yet mature, teens are especially vulnerable to the harmful consequences of substance use. The human brain is the key to everything. From birth to age 25, the brain is under construction and what happens during these years shapes how the rest of our lives play out. This workshop will explore the disease of addiction and the latest research on drug abuse and the adolescent brain. Evidence-Based Supported Employment: An Overview of the Model Nicole Clevenger, BFA Center for Evidence-Based Practices (CEBP) at Case Western Reserve University September 30, :00 AM 12:00 PM 2 RCHS PVN-R 2 CPE Provider #RCS NO FEE Supported Employment, the evidenced based practice, is unique in that it is based upon seven well-researched principles. This presentation describes each of these principles which differentiate this evidence-based practice from other vocational practices. Topics will also include the benefits of employment for persons recovering from serious mental illness and the efficacy of evidence-based Supported Employment in helping consumers meet their employment goals.

He reviews the importance of having a Sponsor and the support of the fellowship to help guide the recovering person through the steps of recovery. Bob reveals why AA is the Grand Daddy of all self-help groups. RELAPSE DYNAMICS: IT S A THOUGHT PROCESS Bob Francis, LICDC September 20, :30 PM - 6:00 PM 1.5 RCHS PVN-C 1.5 CPE Provider #RCS No Fee What can we do to lessen the bad effects of stinkin thinkin? Bob explores ways to address our thinking that enables us to return to recovery, without having to get a new sobriety date. RELIGION VS. SPIRITUALITY: IT S WAY SIMPLER THAT YOU THINK Bob Francis, LICDC September 27, :30 PM - 6:00 PM 1.5 RCHS PVN-C 1.5 CPE Provider #RCS No Fee This video allows us to follow Bob as he guides a person new in recovery down the path to what the 12 th step refers to as a spiritual awakening. Bob sites what happens for most people who have lost their way through the use of alcohol and other drugs to help them return to a way of living guided by selfaccomplishment and self-awareness. Bob Francis, LICDC has been heavily involved in the chemical dependency recovery community in Greater Cleveland, Ohio, over the past 23 years. His personal recovery began in 1985 and he quickly became active in the chemical dependency and criminal justice field, beginning with his work at the Juvenile Justice center. Bob then went on to work at an adult detox center, a hospital based treatment center, and from there, he went into community corrections. He has developed intensive outpatient programs, halfway house programs, and he was involved at the onset of Greater Cleveland Drug Court. He was the Director of Chemical Dependency Treatment at a community corrections agency that serviced Ohio Department of Corrections, Cuyahoga County Adult Probation, and a variety of local Municipal Courts. Bob currently works with Windsor-Laurelwood Behavioral Health Center, in the Chemical Dependency Intensive Outpatient Program. He is implementing his cognitive behavioral approach to his program Relapse: A Thought Process. Bob has always worked in conjunction with area Judges, Parole Officers, Probation Officers, and other agencies that deal with these entities. He has consulted with them to aid in treating chemically dependent offenders. He has developed and gone through the certification process with Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services to gain certification for several programs in Greater Cleveland. Bob has worked with alcoholics and addicts from all walks of life, and has freely shared his own personal experience with alcohol and drug addiction. He is highly regarded in the recovery community primarily due to his willingness to relate his own history with others and offer a helping hand. Bob was fortunate enough to have entered recovery in the place where it all started. His closest friends include people who have been involved in Alcoholics Anonymous for the past 60 plus years. He has learned to KEEP IT SIMPLE. The simplicity of his message, which includes working the steps, spirituality, relapse dynamics, and basic sober living skills, is what he feels to be the most important factor in leading people to this way of life. If you believe that you or someone you love has had enough, then Bob s got something to tell you. He wants to take you on a DISCOVERY BEFORE RECOVERY.
