2 Press Information The Philippine Physical Therapy Association, Inc is a local professional organization of Filipino Physical Therapists duly recognized by local government bodies like the Professional Regulation Commission. The Association is also a member organization of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) and Asian Confederation of Physical Therapy. PPTA members, non-ppta members, and Physical Therapy students annually convene in an event like this that serves as one of the continuing education programs. It aims to reinforce the knowledge and skill a physical therapist should possess by listening to lectures provided by speakers in the field of Physical Therapy and other disciplines related to Physical Therapy. Moreover, research papers are also presented in this event to further ponder the practice of Physical Therapy in the Philippines. In past conventions, PPTA basically highlighted the emerging roles of Physical Therapist in the society and reinforced the definition of Physical Therapy. This year, the PPTA convention will still continue to feature why and how Filipino Physical Therapists are one of the well respected professions in the country. The main objectives of this year s convention includes the following: 1. Explore other possible avenues where a physical therapist can practice his/her skills after acquiring their license 2. Discuss opportunities that await the future physical therapists locally and abroad from the perspectives of fellow Filipino physical therapists who have tried working in rehabilitation facilities outside the country and from the employers 3. Discuss different ethical principles governing international recruitment practices 4. Discuss the present vital issues faced by Filipino physical therapists and the profession 5. Provide a venue for Filipino physical therapists coming from the different parts of the archipelago to interact about their sentiments concerning trending issues of the profession in their respective localities that might have a national impact PARTICIPANTS This one-day pre-convention and one-day convention proper are organized by PPTA members coming from the different institutions from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Expected attendees for this year s convention includes PPTA and Non-PPTA members, students from various schools that may or may not be affiliated with the special project arm of the PPTA which is the Association of Philippine Physical Therapy Students, more popularly known as APPTS, and other professionals that are connected to Physical Therapy. Pre-Conference Seminar/Workshops Oncology in Physical Therapy 101 Speaker: Jeannette Q. Lee, PT, PhD, CSCS, MLD/CDT July 21, 2012, 1:00 4:00 pm at Emilio Aguinaldo College This basic/intermediate level session provides an overview of the role of physical therapy in the management of individuals living with, living through, or living beyond cancer. Basic principles on cancer pathogenesis, diagnosis, and medical management and treatment of common cancers are discussed. Foundational knowledge and tools to perform an initial PT evaluation and develop an appropriate plan of care are presented.

Dorothy Dimaandal, PhD, PTRP is the Program Chair of Department of Physical Therapy, Davao Doctor's College since She received her Doctor of Science (Physical Therapy) Degree and Masters in Health Science (Physical Therapy) from the International University of Health and Welfare Tochigi, Japan in 2007 and 2004 respectively. She earned her degree in Doctor of Philosophy in Education, Major in Special Education and Masters of Arts in Education, Major in Special Education, both from the University of the Philippines Diliman. Edwin Sicat, PTRP is the owner, proprietor and chief physical therapist of Sicat Physical Therapy Centers which specialize in orthopedic cases. These centers include the following: Zambales Doctors' Clinic Physical Therapy Services, ALLIEDCARE Physical Therapy and Chiropractics, and Edwin G. Sicat, PTRP Physical Therapy Center. Marilie Aguila, MPhysio, PTRP is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Physical Therapy of the University of the Philippines - College of Allied Medical Professions. She graduated from UP in 2004 with a degree in BS Physical Therapy. She finished her Master of Physiotherapy specializing on pediatric physiotherapy at the University of Melbourne in She is also a registered physiotherapist from Victoria, Australia. Cheryl Ann T. Xavier, PTRP, MBA is an alumna of Cebu Doctors University with a degree in physical therapy. She then finished her Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Leicester in

6 the United Kingdom. She first worked as a college instructor in Silliman University and Cebu Doctors University before she became a volunteer PT for Voluntary Services Overseas, United Kingdom in 2001 to establish the only pediatric therapy rehabilitation and supportive seating service in the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). Gayline F. Manalang Jr. MOH, PTRP is a Lifetime Member and the incumbent President of the Board of Officers of PPTA. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Phyisical Therapy from the College of Allied Medical Professions of the University. She worked for the same institution after acquiring her professional license in physical therapy (PT), initially as research assistant, and eventually as an instructor of undergraduate programs. She pursued a Masters degree in Occupational Health at the College of Public Health under faculty privilege, completing the program in Harvey Domingo is the incumbent president of the Association of Philippine Physical Therapy Students. He is currently a fourth year student of Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy, College of Allied Medical Professions in University of the Philippines-Manila. Carmelo Cunanan, PhD, PTRP is the current Chair of the Technical Committee for Physical Therapy Education of the Commission on Higher Education. He is also the former PPTA President ( ) and Member of the Board of Directors ( ). Bernadette M. Reyes, MHA, PTRP, RPT is a Member of the Philippine Board of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy of the Professional Regulations Commission. Raul Agustin, RPT, PTRP is a Member of the Philippine Board of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy of the Professional Regulations Commission. Dr. Reynaldo Rey-Matias, PTRP, MSHMS is the present Chair of the Philippine Board of Physical and Occupational Therapy of the Professional Regulation Commission.
