2 General Information Course Description The meeting is intended for all physicians involved in the practice of internal medicine. This includes general internists, hospitalists, subspecialists in internal medicine, family physicians, general practitioners, and residents and fellows in internal medicine and its subspecialties. Medical students, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants will find many sessions of interest and will benefit from the scope and depth of the program. Clinically practical presentations that cover a broad range of topics will be offered, enabling the practicing physician to remain up-to-date in the ever-changing practice of internal medicine. Educational Objectives At the conclusion of the course, the participant should be able to: Discuss the advances in pharmacological management of congestive heart failure. Discuss procedures performed by interventional cardiology. Describe the evaluation and management of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Utilize novel agents for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Discuss the evaluation of penicillin allergy. Prescribe an appropriate antibiotic regimen tailored to a specific infection. Identify and manage a patient with sepsis. Assess and manage a patient with lower extremity ulcers. Describe and recognize the clinical features of murine typhus. Evaluate and manage a patient with obstructive sleep apnea. Describe the potential complications of bariatric surgery. Evaluate and manage a patient with primary bone disorders. Evaluate and manage a patient with irritable bowel syndrome. Evaluate and manage a patient with inflammatory bowel disease. Discuss the indications for biological agents in Rheumatic and Oncological diseases. Describe the components of the annual primary care visit. Discuss end-of-life care issues with patient and family. Accreditation The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston designates this live activity for a maximum of 10.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. UTMB designates this educational activity for up to 1 hour in medical ethics/professional responsibility. In accordance with the ACCME standards, presenters are asked to indicate if they have any relationships in which, in context of their presentation, could be perceived as real or apparent conflict of interest (e.g., ownership). A refund (minus a $50 administrative fee) will be provided to registrants who cancel their registration in writing at least a week prior to the start of the conference.
