Keynote Presentation: Dorothea C. Lerman, Ph.D., BCBA-D Vocational Assessment and Training for Adults with Autism: Some Examples from Research and Practice Abstract: Adults diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are underserved in research and practice, particularly those with no or mild intellectual disabilities. This is particularly concerning in light of surveys showing that a majority of these individuals have difficulty obtaining and maintaining employment. In this presentation, I will describe current research on vocational training programs for individuals with ASD, provide guidelines for assisting individuals with employment challenges, and present suggestions for further research and practice. I will also describe a pilot behavioral skills training program for adults with ASD who are interested in learning how to implement behavior analytic interventions for young children with autism. Each participant is trained using verbal and written instructions, modeling, and role-play with feedback. All participants then practice teaching new skills to young children with autism. Results suggest that this pilot program may be useful for preparing individuals with ASD to serve as behavior interventionists as a potential vocation. Learning Objectives Upon completion of the presentation, participants will be able to: 1. Describe the employment outcomes for adults with autism spectrum disorder 2. State the advantages and disadvantages of commonly used vocational assessments 3. Describe recent research on vocational interventions 4. Describe the method and results of the experiments in this training program
Afternoon Workshop 1: Bethany R. Raiff, Ph.D., BCBA-D Using technology to overcome barriers to delivering behavioral interventions for healthy behavior Abstract: Contingency management (CM) interventions, which involve delivering consequences contingent on objective evidence health behavior, have been widely studied and shown to be effective at initiating a number of different health behaviors, such as cocaine and smoking abstinence, as well as diabetes management. Unfortunately, a number of barriers exist that prevent the widespread adoption and dissemination of CM, including accessibility, convenience, cost, and sustainability. To address some of these concerns, we developed an Internet and Mobile phone-based contingency management intervention, where participants earn monetary incentives contingent on web-camera verified evidence of smoking abstinence. Not only has this CM intervention been effective at initiating smoking abstinence (in a recently completed clinical trial, 43% of videos submitted indicate smoking abstinence, compared with only 14% of videos submitted by a control group), participants have also rated the intervention favorably on a number of dimensions. We have also successfully extended the Internet-based CM procedure to a novel populations and target behavior; namely, teenagers diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes who are not adhering with their blood glucose testing recommendations. To overcome additional barriers to Internet-based CM, such as the cost of incentives and long-term sustainability, we are currently developing a videogame-based CM intervention. Smokers will be able to earn game-based resources, or access to special features in the game, in place of monetary incentives. Videogame-based CM will promote widespread access to an innovative, fun, sustainable intervention at a relatively low cost (the game will be available to play for free), thereby offering the potential to have a substantial public health impact. Learning Objectives 1. To understand the theoretical framework used by behavioral economists to understand why people might engage in unhealthy behavior. 2. To know the definition of contingency management and how it can be applied to improving health problems 3. To understand the barriers to the dissemination and adoption of contingency management 4. To know how we have used the Internet to overcome several barriers to using contingency management for smoking cessation and diabetes management 5. To understand how we are planning to use videogames to overcome additional barriers to the dissemination and widespread use of contingency management for smoking cessation
Afternoon Workshop 2: Anthony DeFulio, Ph.D., BCBA-D Ethical and conceptual challenges to contingency management intervention Abstract: The talk will begin with a brief review of the standard procedures and evidence base for contingency management for the treatment of substance abuse. Ethical issues related to contingency management research and practice will then be identified and described in detail. Conceptual challenges for contingency management will also be raised. Means of addressing the ethical and conceptual challenges will be considered, with a special focus on a kind of contingency management called employment-based abstinence reinforcement. The goal of the presentation is to promote an understanding of contingency management as a research area within behavior analysis, and to discuss strategies for implementation of these interventions in ways that are ethical, practical, and scalable. Learning Objectives 1. Describe three ethical issues related to contingency management intervention for substance abuse and how these issues might be addressed. 2. Describe one conceptual challenge to the behavior analytic approach for substance abuse treatment and how it might be addressed.
Keynote Speaker: Dorothea C. Lerman, Ph.D., BCBA-D Dorothea Lerman is currently a Professor of Psychology at the University of Houston - Clear Lake, where she coordinates a master s program in behavior analysis and serves as Director of the UHCL Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities. She received her doctoral degree in Psychology from the University of Florida in 1995, specializing in the experimental analysis of behavior. Her areas of expertise include autism, developmental disabilities, early intervention, functional analysis, teacher and parent training, and treatment of severe behavior disorders (e.g., aggression, self-injury). Dr. Lerman s graduate students serve as behavioral consultants for school districts in the Houston area and provide services to children and families through an on-campus clinic. Dr. Lerman has published more than 60 research articles and chapters, served as Associate Editor for The Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and Research in Developmental Disabilities, was the founding Editor of Behavior Analysis in Practice, and recently completed a term as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. She has secured more than $1.5 million in grants and contracts to support her work. She was the recipient of the 2007 Distinguished Contribution to Applied Behavioral Research Award and the 2001 B.F. Skinner Award for New Researchers, awarded by Division 25 of the American Psychological Association. She also was named a Fellow of the Association for Behavior Analysis-International in Dr. Lerman is a Licensed Psychologist and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.
Presenter Bios (Continued) Bethany R. Raiff, Ph.D., BCBA-D Dr. Bethany Raiff is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Rowan University. Dr. Raiff received her Ph.D. in Psychology, with an emphasis in Behavior Analysis and Behavioral Pharmacology, from the University of Florida in Dr. Raiff's primary research activities involve developing and testing the integration of technological innovations with behavioral interventions for promoting drug abstinence and other health behavior. Currently, Dr. Raiff is developing and testing Internet and mobile-phone based interventions that involve delivering monetary incentives contingent on objective evidence of smoking abstinence in adult smokers. To make this intervention more sustainable, Dr. Raiff recently received an NIH grant that will involve developing and testing a videogame that will be used to deliver game-based incentives (in place of monetary incentives) contingent on smoking abstinence. In addition to her work on smoking cessation, Dr. Raiff received an NIH grant to apply the same Internet-based monitoring system used with smokers to a novel behavior and population to increase adherence with blood glucose testing recommendations among non-adherent teens diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. She is also interested in extending this methodology to other areas, such as weight loss, physical activity, and alcohol abuse. Anthony DeFulio, Ph.D., BCBA-D Dr. Anthony DeFulio got hooked on behavior analysis when he took Ed Malagodi s Behaviorism in Contemporary Society class as an undergraduate at the University of Florida. From there, he proceeded to graduate training in North Texas before returning to Florida to pursue his Ph.D. Dr. DeFulio s experiences in behavior analysis include conducting basic research on conditioned reinforcement and time-out in pigeons, translational research on the development of reading skills in adults with developmental disabilities, and provision of in-home services to children with autism. For the last seven years Dr. DeFulio has worked at the Johns Hopkins Center for Learning and Health, where he has helped to develop a drug abuse treatment intervention called the Therapeutic Workplace. His latest NIH-funded project involves the development of SteadyRX, a Smartphone-based medication adherence intervention for HIV+ drug users.
