2 Relay News Meet your 2017 event chairs Lori Ewing After being diagnosed with breast cancer in the spring of 2010, Lori joined the Relay For Life of Liberty with Team Ewing. She has been part of the Committee since 2011 and this will be her 8 th Relay season. I Relay so my daughter will not have to hear the words you have cancer and for the many friends and family members that have been affected by this terrible disease. Julie Davidson This is her 20th year with relay and her 10th year in Liberty. Julie got started in relay when her mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer and her mother a year later. She started as a team captain and then joined the committee serving in every volunteer role. She has been event chair or co chair for 6 of those years, and was on regional leadership for 2 years. Julie is a cancer survivor herself, she was diagnosed on January 6th, I relay for all my family and friends that have been diagnosed with cancer to help find a cure and I love working for such a great organization. Lynne Blyss- She has been relaying for 11 years. In 2010, Lynne s mother passed away from cancer and their family formed a team in her honor called Maxine's Garden. She has been a team captain for 7 years and on the event committee for the past 5 years. She has also coached teams from her job and church. She has been working on fundraisers for 3 separate teams and being on the event planning committee is challenging, fun and rewarding for her. I relay to honor my mom and to help find a cure for cancer. My hope is that someday we won't have to. 4 March is Colon Cancer awareness month! Mission Moment is brought to you by North Kansas City Hospital, our prevention & early detection sponsor Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in both men and women and, when men and women are combined, the second most common cause of US cancer deaths. Early colorectal cancer usually has no symptoms. Warning signs typically occur with more advanced disease and may include rectal bleeding, blood in the stool, a change in bowl habits, or cramping pain in the lower abdomen. Opportunities Prevention Even though the exact cause of most colorectal cancers isn t known, prevention and early detection are possible because most colon cancers develop from polyps. Early detection tests for colorectal cancer can help find polyps, which can be easily removed, thereby lowering a person s cancer risk. Risk may be further reduced by regular physical activity; getting to and staying at a healthy body weight; limiting intake of high saturated fat foods, not smoking; limiting alcohol intake; and eating plenty of fruits, veggies and whole-grain foods. Detection Colorectal cancers are more successfully treated when detected early. Beginning at age 50, people at average risk with no symptoms should follow one of these testing options: Flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years or Colonoscopy every 10 years, or Double contrast barium enema every 5 years, or CT colonography every 5 years 4
