1 Partners to Stop Diabetes SCRIPT Andre: Good Morning My name is Andre DuPlessis and I m the Chief Operating Officer for Presbyterian/St Luke s Hospital and the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children. I m also the Colorado Community Leadership Board Chair- Elect for the American Diabetes Association. I would like thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to attend today s breakfast. We re excited about today s program and hope you ll find it valuable. Our goal is to convey how critical diabetes is and the need to address diabetes prevention and management in the workplace.*** We all know diabetes is an epidemic. 26 million Americans have diabetes with an additional 79 million who have pre-diabetes. But what most people don t realize is that diabetes is serious and deadly. The American Diabetes Association conducted research to determine people s perception of diabetes across the US. To our dismay, but to not our surprise, diabetes didn t rank in the top 10 serious diseases, even though it kills more people than AIDS and breast cancer combined. But more than being an epidemic, it s personal. It impacts people we love and care about. We all know someone with diabetes. Perhaps it s your son or

2 daughter, husband or wife, mother or father. How many of you know someone with diabetes, please raise your hands? Diabetes is pervasive Diabetes is complicated. Managing diabetes is a 24/7 365 days a year disease. It s not just about taking a pill or insulin. A lot more is involved. To provide you a glimpse into a life with diabetes, we re going to ask you to count the number of carbohydrates in your breakfast. This is one of the many tasks people with diabetes have to do multiple times every day. Take a moment and write your best guess down on the card provided at your table. ADA staff will come around and collect them and we will present a prize to the winner at the end of this morning s presentation. Mike: Introduce yourself and what you do as the President of the Community Leadership Board. The Magnitude (slides 5-6): Every 17 seconds, someone new is diagnosed with diabetes 316,000 Coloradans have diabetes. That s over 4 full Sports Authority Fields. 90,000 don t even know they have it (Turn 1.14 of the Sports Authority Fields red)

4 The Danger (slide 7): If current trends continue, 1 in 3 children born today will develop diabetes in their lifetime. The Cost (slides 8-10): The total costs of diagnosed diabetes have risen to $245 billion in 2012 from $174 billion in 2007 Medical costs for people with diabetes are 2-3 times higher than people without diabetes In addition to the 26 million Americans who have diabetes there are 79 million Americans with pre-diabetes. 7% of your employees drive 16% or your healthcare spending There are pie charts in your packets that will show you the impact diabetes has on your company. Just think, 1-in-12 of your employees is dealing with diabetes. 1-in-12. (Pause for effect). This is why diabetes needs to be stopped. It is affecting our community, our companies, and our loved ones. Today, we hope to focus on that need, but also on why it makes sense, from a business standpoint, to align your companies with the American Diabetes Association. 5 Sue: Good morning, my name is Sue Glass and I m the Executive Director for the American Diabetes Association. Pat: Own talking Points Sue: Thank you Andrea Thank you Pat. We appreciate your willingness to share with us today. So far you ve heard about the financial, personal and business impact of diabetes. While diabetes is a devastating disease and has reached epidemic proportions, the good news is that you can prevent complications associated with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes by 58%. However, to do so, there has to be a critical focus on diabetes in the workplace.

7 Investing in awareness, education and team building can help improve your employees health and productivity just as Pat shared with us. The American Diabetes Association has a solution for employers that will help them achieve those outcomes. Stop Work is a program focused on bringing vital knowledge and awareness about diabetes prevention and management in the workplace. It is designed to dovetail into your current wellness program or help you jump start one. o The program has four components, both online and on-the-ground. o 1 st Component Employer Portal (No Cost to All employers) Through the portal you can download turnkey wellness materials from the ADA that can be co-branded and shared with your employees all year long. The employee portal includes many wonderful tools which are listed on the slides. I would like to highlight just a few. A Wellness Calendar which provides monthly health topics with supporting materials, including articles and recipes. Healthy Living Worksheets are available in English and Spanish, they can be customized with your company logo. Topics include preventing and managing diabetes, healthy eating, exercising, and changing and monitoring habits. Healthy Meetings Guide Integrate healthy behaviors into your corporate culture and become a more health-conscious and productive place to work. MyFoodAdvisor This award-winning nutrition tool allows users to explore foods, track their daily meals, find healthy substitutions, analyze recipes and find new recipes. Recipes for Healthy Living Each month, new recipes, meal plans and cooking tips are posted.

8 Living with Type 2 Diabetes a program for people newly diagnosed with diabetes to manage and live with diabetes. Diabetes 24/7 This personal health record allows people to better manage their diabetes by tracking data and sharing data with health care providers. My Health Advisor - This powerful risk assessment tool demonstrates how making lifestyle changes can lower users risk for developing type 2 diabetes and its complications over an 8 year period. Team Fitness Challenge The Association has two wonderful events that provide employers the opportunity to create a culture of wellness by engaging employees in fitness events like Tour de Cure and Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes. Our staff is more than happy to provide an onsite inspirational kick-off to get employees registered, moving for their health and raising critical funds to Stop Diabetes. o 2 nd Component Employee Portal (It s at no cost to employers) Your employees have access to a co-branded webpage that will provide seasonal materials to help them learn about healthy lifestyles and track their wellness goals and successes o 3 rd Component Weight Talk and Weight Talk D (Premium service) This is a premium program that offers employees personalized weight loss coaching over the phone and online with an evidence-based curriculum for those with and without diabetes. o 4 th Component which we re very excited about and is unique to Colorado is an onsite educational classes provided by local health and wellness professionals. This feature is only available to those companies that support the American Diabetes Association either through sponsorship or corporate fundraising teams.

9 The American Diabetes Association will deliver a program to your company that will meet your specific wellness needs through four categories: Nutrition Fitness Psychological Well-being Prevention/Diabetes Management So how does that work? Well it s simple If your company supports the American Diabetes Association s efforts to Stop Diabetes through sponsorship or a corporate team for one of our events you will gain points you can spend on classes in those four categories. $5K-$14K = 500 points $15K-$29K = 1,000 points $30K+ = 3,000 points What can the points earn you? Well let s use 500 points for example. For 500 points, we ll come to your office and provide the following classes: Reading Food Labels, Stress Management and Zumba, but of course you choose the date and time. I hope you can see how the Stop can serve as a solution to address diabetes in the workplace. I would now like to turn it back to Andre to provide a few closing remarks. Andre: (Slide 22) As you ve heard and seen this morning, the American Diabetes Association can not only meet your marketing business needs, but also improve the health and well-being of your employees. There are many opportunities for your company to

Programs like Stop Work, Por Tu Familia, Family Link, Camp Colorado and the American Diabetes Association Expo or events like Father of the Year Gala, the Tour de Cure cycling event and Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes.
