1 Rare Meat The newsletter of the January 2019 Serving the citizens of Albany, Troy and environs since 1925 OFFICERS MEMBERSHIP President: CAROL QUANTOCK VICKI ADLER 1st Vice-President: URSULA DESSINGUE MICHELLE BAKER 2nd Vice-President FRAN MCDOAL JEFF BENNETT JOANN BEACH JOHN BIANCO DR. ROB BRASS 3rd Vice-President CHRISTOPHER BURKE Secretary: JERRY GORDON Treasurer: PAUL VERGONI, Club LARRY KRUG, Char Fund Tail Twister: TOM HART Lion Tamer: RUTH SANO Report of the party held on December 5 at Valente s Our annual holiday party was another success, thanks to the efforts of Lion Maryanne, who always manages to come up with funfilled ways to keep us entertained. The re-gifting exchange provided lots of laughs, as well as many lovely things for some lucky folks. (We can hardly wait to hear how happy Michele was with what John brought home.) And when it comes to drawing reindeer who knew we had a club full of Rembrandts? (I am referring, of course, to Lefty Rembrandt, the famous one-armed paper hanger.) Permanent Director PDG DAVE HARRIS JANE CHOUINIERE MONA CONNERNEY DOUG DAVIS URSULA DESSINGUE KATHY DORN DENNIS FAGAN MIKE FARRELL DR. STEFAN FOSCO JERRY GORDON MARYANNE GORDON PDG DAVE HARRIS DR. VICI HARRIS Directors, 1st year of 2: CHRIS HORAN MIKE O BRIEN DIANE BURKE HART TOM HART CHRIS HORAN Directors, 2nd year of 2: JOHN BIANCO ELENA WATSON DR. DAVID LEVINE Membership Chair: MARYANNE GORDON KRISTIN MCVEIGH LARRY KRUG FRAN MCDOAL MICHAEL O'BRIEN Immediate Past Pres: CHRIS HORAN ALBANY & TROY LIONS PO BOX 192 TROY, NY (518) info@albanytroylions.org ALBANYTROYLIONS.ORG Rare Meat editor: JERRY GORDON JERRYGORDON@JUNO.COM YOUR SUBMISSIONS ARE ENCOURAGED! CAROL QUANTOCK RUTH SANO Our next general meeting Is Wednesday, January 2, at the Red Front. Our speaker will be Joanna Patterson from Cornell Cooperative Extension, who will talk to us about keeping our homes safe and secure. We call the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m., but please try to be there by 5:45 so you can place your dinner order and have a few minutes to socialize. The restaurant likes a head count, so please tell Lion Jerry ( or jerrygordon@juno.com ) whether you ll be there. Telling him your intentions will be one less follow-up phone call that Lion Mike will have to make. SUE SHIPE PAUL VERGONI ELENA WATSON DR. ALLEN ZIEKER

2 Bring a potential member to a meeting. Page 2 AlbanyTroyLions.org January 2019 Zone meeting! Our Zone Chair Liza Tougher says, I have finalized the details for a Zone Club gathering. It will be at Valente's Restaurant in Watervliet on Wednesday, January 9, 7 to 9:30 P.M. It will be a way for me as ZC to get to meet everyone and for all of you to network and to 'just have a great time' with Lions from other clubs. [FYI: the other clubs in our zone are Bethlehem, Duane, Greater Ravena, Town of Wright/Schoharie Valley and Waterford.] DG Michele O'Hare will be there as well as IPDG John McDonald. So we are very excited! A&T Lion Chris Burke, executive director of NABA, will speak about their grant request from the Brandel Youth Foundation to help their KidSight program. It will be a buffet-style Italian Dinner with cash bar. Price/person will be $24, including coffee, tea or soda, cookies, tax and tip. Pay with cash or a check payable to Valente s. Put this networking activity on your calendars. I will have a suggestion box on the sign-in table. Please feel free to place any comments ( good or bad), suggestions, photos, zone project ideas, in the box. if you have any ideas to add to our evening, contact ZC Lion Liza Tougher at pansymoo@aol.com or Please let Lion Jerry know whether you ll be at the zone meeting no later that Jan 2. You can tell him at our meeting, or let him know ahead of time at jerrygordon@juno.com or KidSight Vision Screenings Kathryn Miklowitz, NABA s LPN who conducts their KidSight vision screenings of pre-schoolers, always appreciates our help. They usually start around 9:30 a.m. and last an hour or two. Her January schedule: (Most are in our area; the last two are further out.) Thu 1/3 Albany School of Humanities Wed 1/16 Pine Hills in Albany Wed 1/9 Philip Schuyler in Albany Fri 1/18 Paige School in Schenectady Mon 1/14 Pineview in Albany Fri 1/25 Woodlawn in Schenectady If you d like to sign up for one or more, please contact Kathryn at kmiklowitz@naba-vision.org and mickeyskat@gmail.com or call her on her cell at for time and address details. Lansingburgh Boys & Girls Club Lion Maryanne says, A representative of the LB&G Club has gotten back to me with some suggestions for how we can be of service to the community by helping them. In late March & early April, they send out 20,000 general appeal letters that need to be stuffed and labeled. This can be done at the club, at our meeting or taken home. Any amount we do is helpful. They hold three fundraisers during the year at the club (501 4th Ave, Lansingburgh): A spaghetti dinner in April, a chicken barbeque in August and a fall brunch. They need help serving at all of them. [In addition to being helpful, it s a chance to wear Lions shirts and aprons and be visible in the community.] And finally, anytime anyone feels like reading to or playing with the younger children, it would be very helpful. We ll be working on a formal club response for their mailing and serving requests, but if anyone wants to spend some personal time working with children, reach out to Lion Maryanne ( ) for more info on what s involved.

3 January 2019 AlbanyTroyLions.org Page 3 Seal Campaign This project is one of our major fundraisers. We added over $1400 in each of last two years to our charitable fund. So far this year, we have received $870. There s still time for you to send a check to the Albany & Troy Lions Club, PO Box 192, Troy, NY Happy Birthday! Happy Anniversary!
