1 St. Pat s Knightly News Knights of Columbus St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Council #14155 Newsletter August 2015 Council Information The Council meets on the first and third Mondays of the month. We begin with the Rosary at 6:45 PM and the meetings start at 7:00 PM in the Crites Room of the Holy Family Center. The first meeting of the month is scheduled as the Business Meeting night, whereas the third Monday of the month is more of a Social Night. We hope to have plans for the Social Night planned in advance. From Deputy Grand Knight Rob Gilsdorf I hope that everyone had a good and safe 4 th of July. Summer is half way over and the kids are starting to get ready for school. At the last Business Meeting I passed around a sheet looking for Brother Knights to serve as Program Directors. I had hoped that we could fill all the slots with Directors, but we still have two open programs. The Youth Activities program and Family Activities are still vacant. Please consider volunteering to fill one of these spots. It is an important way to get our mission in front of the Parish. Contact me if you are interested or need more information. St. Pat s Parish Festival just ended. Thank you to everyone who was able to take the time to volunteer this year. I hope that you had as enjoyable experience as I did helping support our Parish and Community. Coming up on 7/25 is the Tanzania Relief Salisbury Steak Dinner. We also will be hosting an Ice Cream Social after the 5:30 Mass on 8/23. This is a great opportunity to reach out to the Parish youth. Events like this are only possible thanks to the hard work and dedication of our Brother Knights. Thank you for taking time to do these things. Upcoming 1 st Degrees schedule as of right now are on the following Tuesdays: Aug. 11 th, Sept. 8 th, and Oct. 13 th. If you know of someone that would be a great addition to our brotherhood, recruit them and get their Form 100 to the Grand Knight so we can take them to one of these next Degrees. We still are looking for a few good men (and women) to joins us on Sunday Aug. 9 th for our visit to the Ohio Vet s home. Let me know if you are interested. On Wednesday, Aug. 12 th at 7:00 PM we are joining Councils from the Toledo Chapter to host an evening for a meet and greet with the seminarians at The Pines in Fremont. We have some upcoming Mud Hens games that we need workers for. Sun. 8/9, Tues. 8/18, Tues. 8/25, Sat. 8/29, and Mon. 8/31. These games help fund many of our social events. Contact Ray Darr at , if you can help All of these events are only possible because of the continued volunteering of Brother Knights. I often see a lot of the same faces at these events. It would be refreshing to see some new ones helping out. After all, that s why we are Knights, and we all joined to help and serve the Lord.

2 Field Agent s Report for August 2015 Ask Eligible Men to Join Today, I want to address the growth of the Order. Membership growth is the fuel that keeps this great fraternal engine running. All of our charitable works at the council, state, national and international level are thanks to our hard-working members. And more members equals more charity. We know that the membership blitz is a tried and true way for councils to get more men to join. We see these pushes often in March, in celebration of Founder s Day, and again in October. These drives are successful because brother Knights have increased visibility speaking or presenting during and after Masses and at special events. We must remember that we have a duty to ask each and every Catholic gentleman to join our ranks for the good of the Church, the community and the Order. During the rest of the year, we often forget to ask men to join and to bring their families into the Knights of Columbus family. You probably know an eligible Catholic man you could ask today. What if the only reason he hasn t joined is because no one has asked him yet? When telling a prospect about the strengths of the Order, don t forget our greatest fraternal benefit: our insurance program. This is often a selling point to a potential member who is on the fence. Many members become Knights simply to be able to buy coverage to protect their family. Soon after, they realize the good our charitable works do for their community, and they are proud to be members. 3 From Past Grand Knight Ray Darr One of the things that concerns me about our Council is the limited participation of many of our members. This is a problem with many older Councils. Every Council in the Order faces this issue at one time or another. What concerns me at St. Pat s is that we are a newer Council. We will be 7 years old on October 10 and yet there are many who have not attended one meeting, helped at one event, sold one ticket. As a familiar saying goes, we want to nip it in the bud. What are we doing wrong? What do you want from YOUR COUNCIL? Attendance at meetings is not a requirement, although we d love to see you. Surely there is some event that perks your interest. Everyone is busy these days. You don t have to help at every event. Help out at one or two a year. That s all we ask. Some members have said that all we do is sell tickets. Not true! We have 2 Statewide raffles per year the upcoming Football Sweepstakes which benefits our general fund and the Charity Campaign which generates funds for our Charitable activities. Charity is the first principle of the K of C. We collect for our Citizens with Developmental Disabilities in the Spring and we cook and serve at St. Louis Helping Hands just to mention a couple activities. We have many other activities planned for the year. Many involve the youth, your spouse, and your whole family. Instead of the second meeting during June, July, and August we have a Cookout. We had a cookout on July 21 and will have another on august 17. Not interested? Tell us what would interest you. We can t change anything unless we know what you want. If you really are proud to be a Knight and want to be a part of YOUR COUNCIL, let the Grand Knight or me hear from you. The Knights of Columbus truly is an Experience of a Lifetime. Blood St. Pat s There always is a need for blood donors. Have you considered donating blood to the Red Cross? It s very easy and there are only a few simple requirements. If you are able, please consider donating at St. Pat s on Monday, August 18. Donation times are Noon 6:00 PM. For further information and to schedule a donation, call Bill Thome at Give the gift of life! Give blood! K of C Council Golf Shirts & Jackets Golf shirts can still be ordered through PGK Ray Darr. All sizes are available. They are green with beige trim with the K of C emblem with St. Pats Council on the left breast and your name on the right. These shirts are embroidered, not silk-screened. We also have St. Pat s jackets in True Hunter/True Navy in all sizes. Several men and women have already received the first shipment. The jackets have a lightweight fleece lining and are great for Fall and Spring. With a sweater or sweatshirt they can also be worn in all but the coldest temperatures. Prices will be adjusted slightly upwards for shipping on single order items.

It s a magnetic needle in fluid that points north. There are so many different compasses out there, pointing us in so many different directions. There are compasses that will lead us to fame and fortune, and there are compasses that lead us to a life of crime. There are compasses that lead us to a life of public service, compasses of healing work and of educational service as well. And there are compasses that show us of a life we wish we could have, but there is only one true compass. That compass I m referring to is our spiritual compass. People use it as an important equipment to steer them the way to their destination, whatever the conditions encountered similarly. When we embark on our spiritual journey, we need a spiritual compass to help us steer our way through the minefield of life s hurts, failures, and defeats that the deceiver uses to lead us astray. People have always used their conscience as a guide in our spiritual journey, but in today s lives of compromise, our conscience is not always a sure guide. As we travel on our journey of life we need constant reminders that we are children of God by referring to his Holy Word. We as Knights of Columbus need to be more in tune with the Word of God, as we do our works of charity and duty to our Church, and to our fellow Knights and Community. This is never an easy job but if we look to our souls and our hearts we will find the strength to do what we must for the Church, our Community and for our Country. So as we move into a new fraternal year, let us all look ahead to what we need to make our Assembly the best we can be. And let us DARE TO DREAM. Birth: August 12 Death: August 14 Venerable, Fr.
