2 SUPPORTING THE MOST IN NEED Proudly, Luton has grown from a small boutique Real Estate agency into one of the most successful Real Estate agencies in Canberra. We are committed to the community who support us and we actively support our local community through a broad-ranging community service program. This is lead by our flagship event called the Luton Charity Ball which raises money for selected charities each year. Over the past 6 years our Charity Ball has raised over $1million for local charities and communities within Canberra. Our beneficiary charities for 2017, 2018 and again this year are Karinya House, Project Independence and Hartley Lifecare. We also pledge $10,000 to the Canberra Hospital Foundation and Ozhelp every year. For engagement, we regularly participate in other Charity Balls purchasing corporate tables, buying or donating auction items. Annually, our auctioneers as a group donate significant time to fundraising auction events. We believe in the Canberra community and the power of the people within it. 3 HOMES OF HARTLEY LIFECARE PROJECT INDEPENDENCE KARINYA HOUSE Consider this: You are an ageing parent with two adult sons that have very high and complex disabilities, who require support 24 hours of the day. Who is going to look after your children when you are no longer here? Hartley Lifecare is a local and specialised disability service that has provided high quality residential, recreational, respite, transport and community services for children and adults with physical and complex disabilities since Hartley Lifecare is focused on making a difference for people living with disability, their families and carers within the ACT and surrounding region. We believe that while disability changes lives forever, it does not have to stop a person from participating in their community or diminish their quality of life. With special, intensive ongoing support, people with physical and complex disabilities lead fulfilling lives. While many disabilities develop before birth, the reality is that a disability or brain injury can happen unexpectedly to anybody at any stage of their life. Hartley Lifecare exists to support people with a wide range of complex disabilities through our programs and services delivered by our exceptionally skilled and caring staff. Hartley Lifecare relies on NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) funding, corporate partners and individual donors as well as special events to raise the funds needed to enable us to expand and enhance the services we provide to people living with disability in our local community. All of the funds that Hartley will receive from the Luton Charity Ball will be contributed to our respite care program the renovation of Tanderra House and re-build of Hartley Court. Consider this: You ve been there to support and teach your child valuable lessons that help to build the dignity and confidence they need to take on the world. The realisation has struck that you re both growing older and your child is eager to enter society as an independent adult. Getting the keys to your first home and having the freedom to live independently is a significant milestone, but for those who have an intellectual disability, the dream of independent life can be put on hold, or is out of reach. How can I fix this? Persons with disabilities and in particular persons with an in intellectual disability are often dependent on the care provided by family in meeting their most basic needs. Considerable difficulties can be encountered when these care givers are no longer in a position to provide this level of care, whether through old age, financial hardship or other constraints. Project Independence is the first organisation of its kind in Australia where people with a disability, with preference given to those with an intellectual disability, will achieve ownership of the property, through ownership of a company share, whilst living in a supported, person centred environment that encourages independence through financial and personal growth. Project Independence offers a permanent stable environment for the life of the resident or it can be used as a stepping stone to independent living. Consider this: You are a young woman, living with mum until the hostility reaches breaking point and you have to stay with your boyfriend for a few days. When his controlling behaviour turns into aggression, it is time to sleep on the grubby couch at a friend s place. Add into the mix the shock of discovering you are pregnant. How will you look after a baby when it is already a struggle to look after yourself? Where are you going to sleep tonight? How are you going to keep yourself and your baby safe? Karinya House Home for Mothers & Babies Inc. is a community based, not-for-profit organisation providing supported accommodation, transitional housing, outreach services and support groups to pregnant and parenting women and their families who are in crisis. Our service, which operates on a twenty-four hour, seven days a week basis, is located in the ACT and provides professional and specialised support to women throughout Canberra and the surrounding regional areas. Since the establishment of Karinya House in late 1997 through to 30 June 2016, we have provided residential and outreach support to 5,557 pregnant and parenting women. Karinya House, Project Independence and Hartley Lifecare have considered these things and this is the reality they live each day with their clients. These important and heroic charities are giving hope to individuals and families within our community by putting a roof over our sisters and brothers in need. HOPE
