2 About Thurston County PAL Coach Lydell Spry Executive Director Coach Spry is a Certified level III United States Amateur Boxing Coach. He was trained and certified, by Olympic and professional boxing instructors, at the Olympic Training Center, in Colorado Springs Colorado, and is a professional boxing trainer. The Thurston County Police Athletic League is a juvenile crime prevention and intervention program. The program is designed to provide inner city youth and other underserved young boys and girls with a highly structured, therapeutic, and educational life skills program to enhance their understanding of individual reliability, accountability, and responsibility. The organization has existed in principle since 1984 and has served over 1,500 individuals, some of whom have gone on to pursue professional boxing careers and others who are currently seeking advanced academic degrees. Thurston County PAL is the only boxing training program of its kind between Seattle and Vancouver, Washington. With an estimated 205,000 youth living in this area (12% living below the poverty level), the need is great for support like that which we provide. What we do: Proactively interrupt self-destructive behavior and reduce juvenile recidivism Improve the social skills of youth and families Instill civic virtue in the population we serve Encourage at-risk youth to complete their education, take personal responsibility for their lives and impact on their community

3 There are two primary components to the organization s programs: Services Offered: Law-related educational classes ( Youth Academy ) Law enforcement mentoring and tutoring Educational transitional services, GED and college preparation Job skills and interview preparation classes for a successful careers Life skills classes Cognitive, personal and social development groups Parent support groups and referral services Annual summer teach retreat Annual summer boxing camp to learn boxing rules fundamentals, coaching and judging. Competitive amateur boxing for males and females ages 8 to 32 Juvenile and adult self-defense classes and the fundamentals of boxing for everyone from age 5 to senior citizens Athletic Component: The therapeutic value of boxing is both intrinsic and extrinsic. The highly structured daily vigorous regime and routine builds neuromuscular development. Neuromuscular development means the ability of the body to perform the right action at the right time. Boxing develops highly trained nervous system, cable of instant reflexive action, and instills self-confidence and self-reliance. Boxing is also a Martial Art and a positive outlet for physically aggressive youth. Boxing teaches timing, strategy, discipline, and selfreliance all of which translate to improved self-esteem and, as a result, better life choices. Academic & Social Services Component: While the organization s primary focus is rigorous athletic training, its secondary focus on a base level of academic performance and respectful behavior outside the gym ensures that our participants become not only strong self-reliant athletes, but active contributors to our local community. Our affiliation with local law enforcement agencies allows the organization and our participants to interact with local businesses, colleges, clubs, faith-based organizations, schools, and military entities to address the numerous social issues impacting today s youth and families in our area. The uniqueness of this program and our approach is the element of law enforcement involvement with officers volunteering as mentors to youth, and the provision of academic support services (tutoring, homework assistance) as well as instruction in law-related education and life skills. 4 Organizational History Key community supporters: Jerry Clark Jammy Will Tri Vo Scott Cary John Heelan Otis Sistrunk Washington State Employee's Credit Union The Olympia and Lacey Police Departments, and The Thurston County Sherriff s Department endorsed the Thurston County PAL program in May The Thurston County chapter of PAL began official operations in Lacking a suitable training facility and not wanting to give up on the program, Coach Lydell Spry donated his home s garage as a temporary training facility. In the summer of 2009, a vacant warehouse space was donated to the organization. Today, we are actively seeking support to complete the improvements and acquire the equipment needed to officially move in to our new home. Thurston County PAL, Board, staff and key volunteers are currently working with a team of non-profit professionals to develop and implement a sustainable business plan, building our fundraising plan, actively soliciting support from local businesses and individuals, and submitting grants to public and private foundations. We have been fortunate enough to receive many smaller donations from local individuals and a few key donations from those listed along the left-hand side of this page. We appreciate your organization giving us the opportunity to present our request for support to you and look forward to clearly demonstrating the difference your contributions will make in the lives of hundreds of Thurston County at-risk youth and young adults.
