2 There is a movement of people who are engaged in discussing new ideas, and are putting ideas into action to improve our community. This movement is TEDxWanChai. WanChai Established in 2011, TEDxWanChai imbues the progressive spirit found in the district of WanChai, and is one of the most established of the independently organised TEDx communities in Hong Kong. What began as a small movement has continued to gain momentum, and now, just a few years later, the TEDxWanChai experience has grown to include a sold-out 1,200 person conference in 2016, a Women-focused conference in the year prior, and intimate salon events for people over the past year. The response to our program has been overwhelming, and we have experienced exciting exponential growth, connecting a community of over 10,000 people across our online communication platforms. As we embrace the seventh year of TEDxWanChai, we are excited about the opportunities that are before us. We have continued to grow and evolve, and our programmes such as the Youth & Diversity Inclusion Scholarship have allowed participants to take their own ideas and put them into action. 3 WHAT IS? TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started in 1984 as a four-day conference in California, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. Today, TED covers almost all topics by speakers from all disciplines and cultures. From science to business to global issues, TED is covered by over 100 languages, leaving footprint all over the world. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman. TED s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self-organised TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities. 4 WHAT IS? In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organised events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organised. (Subject to certain rules and regulations) TEDxWanChai2018 SponsorshipProposal 4

9 OUR AUDIENCE TEDxWanChai s audience tends to be educated, affluent, and curious about the world around them. A large majority has undergraduate degrees, and the audience includes four times as many graduate degrees as the general population. The single largest demographic is women aged 25 54, with a fairly even gender and age distribution. 10 TEDxWanChai 2016: CROSSROADS In 2016, we dramatically scaled our impact. We expanded our main event from 600 attendees in 2015 to a sold out event at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts for 1,200 participants. Our diverse line-up of speakers, acts and experiences explored the theme of Crossroads on the TEDxWanChai stage. In the daylong event celebrating our past and our future, we featured leaders and thinkers, acclaimed artists, environmentalists, entrepreneurs, and many others - each hand selected to inspire, inform and provoke. The talks offered insights into a wide range of topics, from personal stories behind some of Hong Kong s most well-known names to thought provoking talks on financial technology, food supply, becoming a citizen scientist and the art community. 12 TEDxWanChai 2018: EMERGENCE In 2018, we will be assembling a vivid cast of characters capable of stirring the imagination as never before. We are looking for thinkers and doers driving grassroots movements and innovations from the ground up in our local communities. In many fields - including philosophy, science, art, systems theory, machine learning and more - emergence is a phenomenon where larger entities arise through interactions among smaller or simpler entities.
