The New Board of Directors November Run Days Of Calendars and T-Shirts Annual Dinner Notice and just a little bit more What a Line-up!! In what most likely has never happened before... and may not happen again, three of Jim Kreider s famous Berkshire locomotives and their owners lined up during the Fall Meet for a publicity photo. From Left to right: Gil Baerd, Tom Lawson and Gary Mocko. Not in the picture, but just as pleased as punch to see this stunning line-up, was Jim Kreider. As the photo shoot ended and each locomotive chuffed away, Jim stated it was one of the most impressive moments of his life.
2 Page Riverside Live Steamers December 2014 The New RLS Board of Directors! At the end of the November Board of Director s meeting, the tradition of counting the many voting ballots took place. Once everything was totaled and tallied, the result became the motley crew pictured above: (from the front to rear, left to right, top to bottom, inside and out) Brook Adams (Secretary), Joan Adams (Treasurer), A.J Benson (Vice President), Mike Gardener, Jeff Gorjan, Dave Bunts (President), Dave Parrott, and Bill Hesse. Please be sure to thank the outgoing Board members for their service and leadership: Rich Casford, Bob Beard, Jim Kreider, and David Lazarus. The 2015 Annual Dinner and Awards Banquet In a little more than a month, a whole bunch of RLS-folks will make the pilgrimage to the Hidden Valley Golf Course in the Norco Hills for the RLS Annual Dinner. Usually, the dinner is held on the Saturday before the last run day of January (Somewhere around the 22 nd 25 th ). However, this year, we had to move the date up by two weeks due to a conflict at Hidden Valley. The date for the 2015 Annual Dinner will be January 10 th! Every member should have received an RSVP for the Dinner. Unfortunately, because of the new date, Glenn Maness must have your RSVP by January 6 in order to reserve your spot at one of the tables. Don t miss out! And, as always: the more, the merrier!
3 Page Riverside Live Steamers December 2014 November 9 Run Day (photos by Joan Adams) What a great day to be at the club: Very clear skies and lots of locomotives! Unfortunately, Summer thought it would be a great day to visit the club too (for one last time): The midday temperature reached 95 degrees! The day started out like any normal Summer day (except that it was November): Paul Quick heading onto our mainline first and making a few laps before the summer heat settled in. Locomotives out for the day were: Paul Quick s 4-4-2, Bill Phillips 4-6-2, Brad Bluth s , Charlie Kennemer s 2-6-0, the Club s and the Club s There were also a few locomotives out, but not under steam: Dave Moore s , the club s C-16, and Al Bondesen s The day s Hunter engineers were Bill Hesse and John Gurwell. Also pulling a passenger train was Brad Bluth s mighty Challenger (engineered by one of our newer members, Ryan Briggs). Making sure everyone stayed in their seats while riding the rails were Brad Bluth, John Gurwell, Chloe De La Torre, Sam Battelo, and Nick Battelo. Our station Master was Glenn Maness. Our O.S. for the day was Bob Beard. Also, because the park was so busy and we had a bunch of trains running, Marty Berg was our crossing guard at the Hunter Station. It was a great day to be at the park!
4 Page Riverside Live Steamers December 2014 Dues are Due (it s the duty we do) Time, once again, for the RLS end-of-the-year mantra: Dues are due. Regular membership dues are $50 per person, non-resident dues are $25, and Junior Members are $12. Think of the RLS dues as an affordable, year-long Christmas gift to yourself: You get to be part of a really terrific club for less than 0.14 per day! 2015 RLS Calendars The latest edition of our almost-famous RLS calendars are in the process of being cooked up right now. They are being printed on high-quality, thick paper, using quality inks and high resolution pictures. However, there is a caveat: We re going to print only 75 of them this year. For the last couple years, we ve printed 100 calendars and each year we ve had 10 to 20 left over. So, this is your gentle warning: once they re gone... they re gone. Like last year, they will be debuted and available at the Annual Dinner (Jan. 10), and then available at run days and works days until they re gone. The price has yet to be determined, but they ll probably be somewhere in the neighborhood of $10(ish). RLS T-Shirts Maybe, when you ve arrived at Hunter Park for another day of watching/running/ riding trains, you ve seen a number of the RLS members wearing a classy looking RLS Member T-shirt, and have thought, Gee I wish I could be on the Board of Directors. Well, someday (in a year) maybe you can. However, maybe you have also thought, Gee I wish I had a classy looking RLS Member T-shirt like that. Well, you re in luck! It just so happens that we re taking orders for new RLS Member T-shirts! These are the same grey, high-quality shirts (Hanes BEEFY -T s) that state RLS - Since 1966 above the front pocket and also have the big RLS logo on the back. Interested? All you have to do is head to the clubhouse and fill out one of the handy-dandy T-shirt forms. Shirt sizes range from small to XXX-large and the cost is $12 each ($15 each for the XXX Large).
5 Page Riverside Live Steamers December 2014 November 23 rd Run Day (Photos by Joan Adams) A beautiful day met any and all RLS members who made the bi-monthly trek to Hunter Park for yet another steam-filled day. Unlike the previous run day, the temperature was a wonderful, Fall-like 77 degrees! With six locomotives under steam and a few others in the compound, it really was a pleasant day to be out and about. Locomotives out on the mainline: The Hunter (Mike Gardener), two Moguls (Pat O Guin and A.J. Benson), a Challenger (Brad Bluth), and two Pacifics (Jeff Gorjan s and Bill Phillips). Locomotives that remained in the compound were (Ron Wilkerson), (Richard Miller), (Scott Horgan), (Dave Moore), and (Charlie Kennemer). Our Brakemen for the day were Ryan Briggs, John Gurwell and Chloe De La Torre. Our station master was none other than Glenn Maness
6 Page Riverside Live Steamers December 2014 Has Another Year Already Passed? Yes, Virginia, another year has passed! The above picture was taken a year ago as the Hunter train pulled out of Allen s Valley with an unusual passenger. Santa (looking very So-Cal Cool ) took time out of his busy schedule for a number of trips around our park. He also handed out candy canes to all the kids who rode with us that day (Secret Information **Shhhhh** --For those of you who don t know, our Santa is actually Manny Caldera)!
