Issue 978 University of Iowa College of Dentistry 1 April, 2012 DSB WEEKLY Christine White, Editor Thao Kieu (D2) to Represent the College Of Dentistry at the 48th Annual Dental Students Conference on Research Several UI College of Dentistry Faculty Elected as ADEA Section Officers Alumna Dr. Nicole Eberle Receives Award as a Member of the Colorado New Dentist Committee Article Features Dr. Ray Kuthy s Research Poster Presented at AADR Meeting Dr. Steven Fletcher Assumes OMS Graduate Program Directorship 1 1-2 Thao Kieu (D2) to Represent the College of Dentistry at the 48 th Annual Dental Students Conference on Research Thao Kieu (D2) will represent the UI College of Dentistry during the 48 th Annual Dental Students Conference on Research, which will be held April 15-17, 2012, at the ADA Foundation Paffenbarger Research Center in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Thao won third place in the ADA table competition during this year s Local Research Day meeting for her presentation, Evaluation of a Caries Risk Assessment Tool a Pilot Study. Thao s co-investigators and mentors are Dr. John Warren, Preventive and Community, and Dr. Karin Weber- Gasparoni, Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Fang Qian, Biostatistics Unit, was also a co-investigator. Several UI College of Dentistry Faculty Elected as ADEA Section Officers Several UI College of Dentistry faculty have been elected as American Dental Education Association (ADEA) section officers in their specialty section. To qualify, a person must be a member of ADEA as well as a member of a particular section in order to be eligible for office in that section. Dr. Marcela Hernandez, Operative Dentistry, was elected to a one-year terms as secretary of the ADEA Operative Dentistry Section. In 201, she will become chair-elect of the section, and in 2014, she will become chair. Page 2 (Dentistry Faculty Elected, continued from page 1) Dr. Cheryl Straub-Morarend, Family Dentistry, was elected secretary of the ADEA Comprehensive Care/General Dentistry Section. She will also succeed to the position of chair-elect in 201 and then chair of the section in 2014. Dr. Larry Squire, Family Dentistry, is chair-elect of the ADEA Practice Management Section. He will become chair of the section in 201. Ms. Marsha Cunningham-Ford, Preventive & Community Dentistry, was elected secretary of the ADEA Community & Preventive Dentistry section in 2012. She will become chair-elect in 201 and then chair of the section in 2014. Dr. Bruce Justman, Endodontics, was elected councilor for the ADEA Endodontic Section. His duties will include serving as a delegate in the ADEA House of Delegates during the ADEA annual session, preparing the section annual report after each ADEA annual session, and serving as section liaison with the Council of Sections Administrative Board. Dr. William Synan, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, is currently the ADEA liaison for the American Association for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS).
Page Alumna Dr. Nicole Eberle Wins ADA Award as Member of the Colorado New Dentist Committee Dr. Nicole Eberle (DDS 04, MS Orthodontics 06) is a member of the Colorado New Dentist Committee, which has won the 2012 American Dental Association (ADA) New Dentist Committee Outstanding Program Award of Excellence. The committee received the award following their Surviving the First Ten Years lecture series on practice management. The series is part of the quarterly study club, which offers guidance to new dentist members, presents vendors who share their expertise, and promotes communication and camaraderie. DrBicuspid.com Article Features Dr. Raymond Kuthy s Research Presented at Recent AADR Meeting A poster that Dr. Raymond Kuthy, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry, presented at the recent American Association of Dental Research in Tampa, FL, was featured in a March 28, 2012, column by Rabia Mughal, contributing editor to DrBicuspid.com. The poster, Reasons Relating to Whether or Not Female Dentists Work Full- Time, discussed the number of weekly hours that Iowa female dentists work, with 2 or more hours defined as full time. The research also addressed factors such as the impact of having children and the influence of contributing to the household income. Co-authors on the research included Drs. Adrienne Jennings, Teresa Marshall, Michelle McQuistan, all Preventive & Community Dentistry, and Dr. Fang Qian, Biostatistics Unit. The research was funded by the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation. Dr. Steve Fletcher New OMS Graduate Program Director The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is pleased to announce that Dr. Steve Fletcher has assumed the leadership of their graduate program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, effective March 26, 2012. As the graduate program director, he will oversee the training and development of twelve Oral and Maxillofacial residents. Dr. Fletcher joined the OMS faculty on July 1, 2011, and he recently became board certified. He is originally from Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. Dr. Fletcher received his BS from Brigham Young University and his DDS from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry prior to be beginning his oral surgery residency. Dr. Fletcher and his wife, Jennifer, have four children and live in Iowa City. In his spare time, he enjoys anything having to do with college football and spending time with his family.
