2 The Importance of Vision in Overall Development This seminar will offer a complete overview of developmental optometric care for infants and young children. Attendees will learn how to prescribe for the child s total development, not just for glasses. Several young children will be present for portions of the seminar for participants to see actual techniques demonstrated and applied and for hands-on practice. A thorough background of developmental milestones in infants and young children will be provided. This section will cover the influence of vision on developmental milestones such as movement, socio-cognitive, ocular, and visuocognitive development. Participants will be taken through the examination sequence from preparing for the exam, taking the history, to successfully communicating with the young patient. Dr. Steele will also cover the testing protocols in both administration and assessment. Testing areas covered will be as follows: Oculomotor development Binocular development Performance assessment Vision related to cognitive development Refractive status, including emmetropization and developmental guidance Visual acuity Ocular health Social interaction Retinoscopy A significant portion of the seminar will be devoted to observing retinoscopy patterns, retinoscopy reflex stability, and the child s ability to develop control of looking behavior. This will assist in determining the child s current abilities and provide direction for prescribing. This section will include discussion on lenses, guidance, consultation, and communication. This seminar is highly interactive, with small group presentations and hands-on experience.

3 ABOUT THE LECTURER Glen Steele, OD, FCOVD, FAAO, is a clinical professor and Clinical Professor of Pediatric Optometry at Southern College of Optometry. For 40 years he was in a private practice emphasizing the eye and vision care needs of the infant and child. He is a past president of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development and a past president of the Optometric Extension Program Foundation. He is currently Chair of the InfantSEE Committee of Optometry Cares-the AOA Foundation. He has lectured extensively throughout the USA and internationally in the area of infant vision development and care. Dr. Steele was selected Tennessee s Optometrist of the Year in 1999 and also as one of Optometric Management s Top Ten Optometrists of the Decade in He was the first chair of Operation Bright Start Tennessee, a program to emphasize the need for eye and vision care of the infant. In 2001, he received Southern College of Optometry s Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2005, Dr. Steele was presented with Vision Service Plan s Southeast Regional People First Award. In 2005, he also received G.N. Getman Award from the College of Optometrists in Vision Development for service to the profession and, in particular, a concern for all children. In 2006, he was presented a resolution by the AOA House of Delegates for his work in InfantSEE. He is the 2011 recipient of the William Feinbloom Award from the American Academy of optometry which cited his work with InfantSEE.
