2 2016 annual conference Welcome! 2016 Annual Congress My personal welcome to all of you! Boise, The City of Trees, is our 2016 Idaho Optometric Physicians Congress location. I welcome all the doctors, paraoptometrics, industry friends and supporters who make this congress so successful. We have the opportunity to hear from top physicians in our field. They will cover a wide range of topics from childhood vision anomalies to ocular disease and treatment. The lectures are sure to be pertinent to all modes of optometric practice. We are pleased to have Dr s Raymond Chu, David Talley, Leo Semes and Mark André, as presenters for the OD track. This 3-day period promises top notch education! I would like to thank our Executive Director, Randy Andregg, for helping me secure such a premier education program for our doctors. For our Paraoptometric Section we have a fantastic education program lined up. I would like to personally encourage all the doctors who attend our congress to register your paras for all courses. The information that they glean from this congress will be invaluable to their success as well as yours. We will also have an exceptional Exhibit Hall with our industry partners presenting new innovations and cutting edge technologies. As always, we provide everyone the opportunity to connect with their peers and network with others in our profession. Come and enjoy Boise in September, as the weather should be just right. It is my pleasure to invite you to join the Paraoptometric Section at the Boise Centre this year. The last week in September should bring us beautiful weather with an array of splendid fall colors in the City of Trees to compliment a stellar cast of lecturers. Our program improves with every edition. If you enjoyed the last episode of our congress, just wait until we introduce you to this year s sequel. I am proud to introduce Mile Brujic, OD, FAAO, as our principle speaker. Dr. Brujic comes to us from Northwest Ohio with a wealth of experience and a list of incredible courses to share. Our supporting cast of Juli Dewalt, ABOC and Aaron Melton, ABOC, FNAO come to us compliments of Hoya Vision and Pech Optical, respectively. 3 Doctor s Education and Activity Program Thursday, September 22nd 7:15am BREAKFAST Thursday Raymond Chu, OD MS Dr. Raymond Chu received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the State University of New York, College of Optometry, after earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry/Cell Biology from the University of California, San Diego. He completed a residency in Pediatric Optometry and Vision Therapy at the Southern California College of Optometry at Marshall B. Ketchum University and has remained on faculty since that time. Dr. Chu went on to also complete a Master s Degree in Instructional Design and Technology at the California State University, Fullerton. At present, Dr. Chu serves as an investigator on a number of National Eye Institute (NEI) supported studies, and as a lecturer both in the university and nationally. His research interests include binocular vision, myopia, amblyopia, pediatric optometry, learning-related vision problems, and pedagogy. 8:00am-9:00am The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook, Examining The Infant And Toddler FV Description: To prepare the optometrist in providing full-scope care, this course is designed to provide information on the routine optometric examination of the infant and toddler. 9:00am-10:00am Prescribing for the Hyperopic Child 10:00am BREAK GO Description: Prescribing of hyperopia for reasons other than strabismus and amblyopia has often been challenged, especially in cases of lower levels of hyperopia 3.00D. This course helps practitioners in general practice with guidelines and examination strategies for making hyperopic prescribing decisions in children and adolescents. 10:10am-11:05 Evidenced-Based Myopia Management, What Works And What Doesn t FV Description: Myopia is a global public health issue that numerous measures have been practiced to slow or stop myopic progression. This course will cover an evidence-based approach to myopia management. 11:05am-Noon Commonly Prescribed Medication For Children FV Description: Historically, medications have not included pediatric dosing. Nowadays, more and more medications are including pediatric dosing, and in this course we will discuss pediatric prescribing considerations. 3

Semes, OD, FAAO The author of more than 230 articles, posters, scientific publications and book chapters, Dr. Semes also is recognized as an accomplished educator. He is a graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry where he also completed residency at the Eye Institute of PCO. He is a nominee for the UAB Lifetime Teaching Award (2016), a recipient of the 1993 UAB President s Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as numerous AOSA recognitions. He is among the founders of the Optometric Retinal Society and OGS and has received the Alabama Optometric Association s Educator of the year award in :00pm - 3:00pm Blood Flow in Glaucoma - Insights and Perspectives (Semes) 3:00pm Break GL Description: Much of what we know about glaucomatous damage features a blood-flow component. This course will review the significant deficits in blood flow that contribute to glaucoma damage, assess technology to measure blood flow and present a clinically relevant template for the perspective of blood flows contribution to glaucoma. 3:10pm - 5:00pm Care Of The Patient With Amblyopia (Chu) FV Description: The Optometric Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) contains recommendations on the examination and treatment of patients with amblyopia. Friday, September 23rd 7:00am CE Breakfast, With Mark André, FAAO, The Top Ten Reasons That We Should be Prescribing More Single Use Soft Contact Lenses COPE #47419-CL Description: Single use soft contact lenses have been around for two decades now, yet this modality has not been embraced by practitioners in North America as much as it has been in other regions around the world. This presentation will provide information that makes a compelling case for prescribing single use lenses to your patients wearing soft contact lenses. I will provide ten reasons that support the decision to make single use soft contact lenses the modality of choice in your practice. (A ticket will be required for the meal! To avoid the distracting noise of service, be in the lecture room and seated by 7:00am sharp.) 8:00am-9:00am 9:00am-10:00am The ABCs of Retinal Disease (Semes) PS Description: Whether due to AMD or diabetic retinopathy, recognizing the risks for vision loss represents a significant portion of primary eye care. This course will review the ABCs of these two pervasive retinal disorders. Clinical classifications and management guidelines will be presented. Follow the Bouncing Ball Corneal Hysteresis GL Description: This course demystifies corneal hysteresis and explains its relationship to glaucoma diagnosis and progression. The role of corneal hysteresis in assessing glaucoma risk is described, as are other influencers such as central corneal thickness. 4

5 10:00-10:10am BREAK 10:10am-12:00pm Adventures In The Vitreous PS Description: The vitreo-retinal and vitreo-macular interfaces often present diagnostic challenges. This course will help the attendee sort out progressive and treatable conditions from those that are stable and will not affect vision. 12:00pm - 2:50pm EXHIBIT HALL & LUNCHEON The 2016 Idaho Optometric Association Trade Show opens at 12:00 Noon in EYRIES Hall. Talley, OD, FAAO Dr. Talley received his Bachelor s degree at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and went on to receive his Doctorate degree in Optometry at the University of Alabama School of Optometry. After receiving his Doctorate degree, he completed a residency in primary care with emphasis in ocular disease at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Talley is a member of numerous professional associations and has many publications in the medical management of ocular disease. He has trained Optometric Externs and Residents for 20 years and given over 1000 professional presentations in areas of primary eye care, ocular disease and practice management. Dr. Talley has twice received Optometrist of the Year by the Tennessee Association of Optometric Physicians (TAOP) and the Commitment Award in the annual Excellence in Tennessee recognition program administered by the Tennessee Center for Performance Excellence (TNCPE). He is also listed in Who s Who in Executives and Professionals. Dr. Talley serves as a board certified (ABO) Optometric Physician and Managing Partner of West Tennessee Eye, a large optometric group practice in Memphis, Tennessee. He is responsible for all company activities related to Education, Compliance, Information Technology, Physician Outreach and Third Party Issues. Dr. Talley has also volunteered a great deal of his time for Optometry. He has served in every elected position of the Tennessee Board of Optometry (TNBO) and the Tennessee Association of Optometric Physicians (TAOP) to include two terms as their President. He is currently serving a second term as Chairman of the TNBO. He has also served in many capacities for the American Optometric Association (AOA) to include the Third Party Center Executive Committee. 3:00pm - 5:00pm Clinical Medicine and Technology Trends in Primary Eye Care GO Description: This lecture presents recent developments in science and medicine that will change Optometry. Specific topics to be discussed are The Genomic Revolution, Radio Frequency Therapy, Tissue Engineering and Biomechanics, Anesthetic Alternatives, Wavefront Technologies, Beyond Phaco, Anti-VEGF Therapy, and Sedative Optometry. AS Description: This lecture reviews the basic concepts in dermatology with an emphasis on ocular tissue. She began her career in retail in Eugene, OR. Juli later took a job in a private Optometric practice specializing in Pediatric care. She was later promoted to Optical manager, a position she held for 5 years. Juli began her career with Hoya Vision Care in October 2003 as a Territory Manager; 6 years ago she was promoted to Regional Training Manager. Juli has spoken to several groups across the Northwest and regularly conducts in-office trainings to help customers improve their staff education. 1:00pm - 2:00pm Position of Wear Measurements and Compensated Rxs Advancing technology has given us the ability to use free form surfacing, allowing for far greater precision in spectacle lenses. To provide the best possible vision for our patients, we also need to employ technology in the measurement of the various lens and frame positions relative to the patient s eyes and face. These values, called Position of Wear measurements, can significantly affect the visual performance of the lens. Today we ll review the various measurements, their optical effects and measurement thereof. We ll also discuss how the prescription is compensated for these measurements and verification of the Rx. Do they understand the technology you recommend? And will they want to come back? Communicating with your patients in a way they can easily understand is key. He graduated from the New England College of Optometry in He practices full scope optometry with an emphasis on ocular disease management of the anterior segment, contact lenses and glaucoma. He is active at all levels of organized optometry. Dr. Brujic is on the editorial board for a number of optometric publications.
