1 SOUTHLAKE DOLPHINS SWIMMING CLUB INC. Vice President s Message: Social News: 8 th May 2016 Mother s Day Classic Fundraiser for Breast Cancer Research in memory of Yvonne Ward, family and friends of SLD affected th May 2016 Club Update Meeting for Parents and Swimmers. More details to follow. 25 th June 2016 AGM and Swimmer Trophy presentation. More details to follow. March Birthdays: Jasmyne Browne Kian Cureton Owen Hewitt Rhys Holmes Llain McNamara Fabiana Velezmoro April Birthdays: Dylan Adrian Abby Barraclough Kayla Dawson Kevin Kalember Connor O Neil Victoria Sandford Julia Stampalia Well folks, the Big Kahuna is away, so he has foolishly entrusted me to write something informative and sensible for this edition of the newsletter. I can only do my best. First off, well done to all swimmers for a VERY successful summer season, millions of medals and PB s are the end result of plenty of hard work in water. Remember - Commitment + Consistency = RESULTS We now have a couple of weeks off before we get stuck in again enjoy the break and try to stay off those electronic devices and get outside for some sunshine. I know Ray will be working on his back swing. Whilst I am waffling on I would like to thank our new coach Dorian for putting up with my pathetic attempts at reciting my school boy French every day I ask him if there is a bank nearby (Est il y a une banque à proximité) and what time is it (Quelle est l'heure veuillez) he just smiles and shakes his head! SATURDAY 14 th May - 10am at SLLC please put this in your diaries. This will be our winter season launch meeting, there is so much electronic communication these days we felt it would be great to have a face to face update from the committee on various subjects an agenda will be ed out closer to the time. This is also a great time for parents to ask any questions of the committee or coaches. That s all from me this time around enjoy the break and see you all soon! Cheers Damo Happy birthday and many happy returns for your special day. 1

2 Upcoming Meets: Saturday, 11 th June 2016 South Lake Dolphins Short Course Carnival Saturday, 2 nd - Sunday, 3 rd July 2016 Albany Short Course Carnival Swimmer of the Month (Feb) Benjamin Wai Timekeeper of the Month (Feb) Mekens-Tite Family Swimmer of the Month (Mar) James Kjellegren-Lewis Outstanding Committee Member/s (Mar) Erika Wallington for obtaining grants for Ipads and Neil Doherty for upholding the many roles within this club; Official, Treasurer and Swim Meet Co-ordinator. Well done to you all, a fantastic effort and support for our Club, thank you. Coach s Corner: Hi from the coaches corner, It s nearly over! Yes I am talking about your holidays. We are looking forward to seeing you refreshed and excited about the winter season. We don t want to be the same we want to be always growing in our swimming. Well looking back over the summer period we think you have done really well with many of PB s, medals at the State Championships and many records established, one very old record was broken - ask Kayla who it was? Just remember now s the time to dress like an Eskimo when you come to training and leave training, keep your body warm, it will perform better and recover better. I know over the holidays you might have been tempted to eat too much, well done if you didn t and try harder next time if you did but it s important that you eat healthy when you start training again. Did you know what you eat can affect your ability at training and also how quick you recover between each session, so if you want great times in training and racing, start eating healthy, the good stuff. An Uncle Toby s bar will be better for you than a bucket of chips, a raw carrot rather than a Mars bar. So we look forward to seeing you next week munching on a carrot or an apple. Take care. Ray and staff. In loving memory We wish to send our thoughts to Greg, Eilidh & Kaite, the Ward Family and Friends for the passing of Yvonne Ward. May her spirit and loving memory be with us always. SOUTH LAKE LEISURE CENTRE REMINDERS! Entry fees apply to all South Lake Dolphin swimmers and spectator s fee for all parents poolside. Swimmers under 11 years old must be actively supervised by an adult. Failure to comply may result in denied entry by South Lake Leisure Centre. 2

9 COMMITTEE POSITION NOMINATIONS Dear Club Members South Lake Dolphins is urgently seeking nominations for committee positions that will become available at our Annual General Meeting scheduled for 25 th June Your committee is responsible for everything that happens with the Club - employing coaches, pool space, club nights, swim meets, purchasing equipment, social events etc. The committee meets once a month, with each member attending to a small area of the Club s operations. No single position is too onerous but collectively the committee becomes a purposeful group. It s also a great way to learn more about your child s sport. Please note: A quarter of the Club s parents need to be on the committee at any one point. Remember, many hands make light work. We are all volunteers and without a committee your kids do not have a club to swim with. Here is a brief description of each of the positions available. The 1 st two positions are required to legally run our club. Without them we cannot continue to run. Please consider them carefully and forward your nomination to me ASAP. I am more than happy to give further details for those interested. Registrar Secretary Assistant Treasurer Public Relations Officer Pennant Co-Ordinator Club Night Co-Ordinator First point of contact for new members to the Club. Attends to registrations of new members Responsible for attending to Club Correspondence, arranging meetings and recording minutes. Organises payment of coaches wages Produces Club newsletter, maintains the SLD noticeboard and our Facebook page. Arranges media opportunities with local newspaper when required. Co-ordinates participation at the Club Premierships held annually. Co-ordinates Club Night and produces club night program for each season. All enquiries and nomination forms to be forwarded ASAP to Narelle Clarke (Club Secretary) narelle_clarke@iinet.net.au Thanking you in advance for your nominations. 9

10 South Lake Dolphins Short Course Carnival Coming VERY soon - 11 th June 2016 Sponsorship The more sponsors we get for the event, the more our kids benefit. Please think of all the possible sponsors you know (business or personal) and approach them to sponsor an event or two. The more sponsors we get, the more money we can channel back into the club for our kids. Please don't leave it to the last minute as we need all sponsorship details by Friday 13th May so the sponsors details can be included in the program. Raffle Prizes We want swimmers and spectators to see our prize table with lots and lots of great prizes to be won - the better the prizes...the more tickets we sell. Some suggested items would include wine, chocolates, gourmet foods, toys, unwanted gifts, gift vouchers etc. For any questions about our raffle you can contact Jenny Holliday on jenniferholliday@bigpond.com Volunteering On the day we will need timekeepers but also help to sell programs, raffle tickets, assist with refreshments or even take some photographs if there are any talented people out there. If you want to get involved see me any club night before I come looking for you Contact: Neil southlakedolphins@outlook.com 10
