5 th 11 Symposium International of PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Dear Colleagues, We have the pleasure to announce the 11th International Symposium of which will take place in Athens, 6-8th of December 2013, at the Aegli Zappeion Convention Center. Last year we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the Hellenic Society of. Over these years the organization of high level International Symposia every 3 years has become a tradition aimed at the continuing education of dentists and an exchange of opinions in Dental Community. Despite the hard times we are facing in our country, we believe the offering of high quality scientific events by experts with international recognition is very important. Therefore, we have tried to keep up the tradition, while also making improvements where possible for the benefit of the Dental Community. The scientific Chairmen of the 11th International Symposium of, Professors A. Konstantinidis and I. Vrotsos, in combination with the Organizing Committee, have tried to arrange a scientific program, which will cover the current state of knowledge in the fields of and Implant Dentistry. To this end, well known researchers and clinicians from Europe and the USA have been invited who will share with you their 'state of the art' knowledge in the above mentioned areas. We would like to point out that the Organizing Committee, taking into consideration the difficult economic situation in Greece, have tried to offer lower registration fees compared to previous events. 8 th 11 Symposium International of CURRICULUM VITAE Lecturer Danae Apatzidou Danae Apatzidou after graduating from the Dental School, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (AUTh), pursued postgraduate studies in the Department of, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and furthermore at the University of Glasgow, UK, where she obtained her PhD. In 2011 she was elected as a lecturer in, at the AUTh. She has been involved in studying the aetiopathogenesis of periodontal diseases and much of her work focuses on modern approaches in non-surgical periodontal treatment. Currently, her research interest lies within the application of new techniques in bone regeneration. She has received research prizes and awards on a national and international level and has been serving as a peer reviewer for international scientific journals. Professor Iain L.C. Chapple Iain Chapple is Professor/Head of, Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Birmingham Dental School/Hospital. He is currently Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical and He has written 7-textbooks, he is Treasurer of the European Federation of (EFP) and UK Oral & Dental Research Trust and he coorganizes the EFPs Workshops. He was awarded the Charles Tomes medal by the Royal College of Surgeons in 2010 and also the Rizzo Research Award of the IADR Periodontal Research Group in He is clinical lead for a hospital specialist periodontal service with a referral base of over 6-million and leads the Periodontal Research Group, part of Birmingham's MRC Centre for Immune Regulation. His team are active in research into neutrophil biology and innate immunity, oxidative stress and micronutritional modulation of inflammation, and on the impact of periodontal inflammation on systemic inflammatory diseases. The group translate their research into novel early diagnostics and therapies. Assistant Professor Ioannis K. Karoussis, DDS, MS, FICD, FITI Ioannis K. Karoussis has graduated from the University of Athens. He has specialized in and Implant Dentistry at the Universities of Athens and Berne, where he accomplished his Doctoral Thesis and worked as a Visiting Assistant Professor. He serves as an Assistant Professor at the Department of of the University of Athens School of Dentistry. He has been honoured with prizes and scholarships during his undergraduate and postgraduate studies and he has been granted awards for his research. He has authored or coauthored several articles in national and international scientific journals and book chapters. Since 2003 he works in his private practice limited to and Implant Dentistry. Professor Phoebus Madianos Phoebus Madianos is Professor of, in the School of Dentistry, at the National and Kapodistrian Univesrsity of Athens. He received his DDS degree from the same University and his clinical certificate in Periodontics, as well as his PhD degree in Oral Microbiology from Gothenburg University. After working as Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina, he joined the Department of at the University of Athens in He is currently the Director of the Postgraduate Program in as well as the Osseointegrated Implant Unit of the Dental School at the University of Athens. He has received international awards for his research activity, including the "Hans-R. Mülhemann Research Prize" from the Swiss Society of in 1997, the "Anthony A. Rizzo Award" from the International Association for Dental Research in 2004, and the "Clinical Research Award" from the American Academy of in He is a member of the Executive Committee of the European Federation of since 2011, and President Elect of the European Federation of since Professor Angelo Mariotti Angelo Mariotti graduated from Grove City College with a B.S. in biology and education and matriculated to West Virginia University where he received a PhD in Pharmacology and later a D.D.S. At the University of Florida, he was appointed to and served as the Director of the Postgraduate Program in and became a Diplomat of the American Board of. He is Professor and Chair of the Division of at the Ohio State University.

9 th 11 Symposium International of He serves on the Advisory Board for the Journal of, as Secretary/Treasurer for the Columbus Dental Society, as an examiner for the American Board of, as an editor for Pharmacology and Therapeutics in Dentistry (6th Ed.) as a consultant for the Council of Scientific Affairs of the ADA. As an endocrine pharmacologist, he has published numerous scientific articles on the actions and interactions of sex steroid hormones on cellular proliferation and growth. In addition to his research and teaching, Dr. Α. Mariotti maintains an active private practice in in the Ohio State University Dental Faculty Practice Association. He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and is listed as one of the Best Dentists in America. Dr. Andreas Parashis Andreas Parashis has maintained a full-time private practice limited to periodontics since 1987 in Athens, Greece, and is an adjunct Assistant Professor at the Department of, Tufts University, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He attended Tufts University from 1983 to 1985 and graduated with a certificate in. He earned his doctorate degree in 1991 from the Department of, University of Athens, Greece. In 2010, he became a Diplomate of the American Board of. He worked as a clinical instructor at Tufts University and Athens University, teaching at the under- and postgraduate level, and as an Assistant Professor at the Department of, Tufts University. Anton Sculean is Professor and Chairman of the Department of at the University of Berne in Switzerland. He qualified in 1990 at the Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary and has received his postgraduate training at the Universities Münster, Germany and Royal Dental College Aarhus, Denmark. He received his Habilitation at the University of Saarland, Homburg, Germany. From 2004 to 2008 he was appointed as Head of the Department of and Program Director of the EFP accredited postgraduate program at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. He has been the author of more than 180 publications. He is on the editorial board of more than 10 peer reviewed dental journal. He served from as president of the Periodontal Research Group of the IADR and is currently president of the Swiss Society of. His current research interests include periodontal wound healing, regenerative and plastic- esthetic periodontal therapy, treatment of periimplantitis, antibiotic and antiseptic therapies, laser treatments and oral biofilms. He has also written a total of 12 chapters in periodontal textbooks and has delivered more than 300 lectures at national and international meetings. He is the author or co-author of over 40 peer-reviewed articles in Greek journals and over 20 articles in international journals. He has lectured extensively (more than 150 presentations) at seminars and meetings. He is the author of chapters in textbooks and of the color atlases Furcation Involvements and Clinical Application of Computer-Guided Implant Surgery. Dr. Parashis was a member of the board of the Hellenic Society of from 1989 to 1999, president for two terms ( ) and from 2003 to 2012 the representative of the society at the European Federation of. Professor Stefan Renvert Stefan Renvert received his D.D.S. degree from the University of Lund, Sweden, in He obtained the Certificate in in 1981 and the Odont.Dr. (PhD) degree in 1984 at the Dental School of Malmo University of Lund, Sweden. In 1999 he became Professor of Oral Health Sciences and Research Director at Kristianstad University, Sweden. He also holds a position as Visiting Professor at Dublin Dental Hospital, Ireland and at the Blekinge Institute of Technology, Karlskrona, Sweden. He is the General Secretary of the EFP. His research early focused on outcome assessments of different treatment modalities of intra-osseous defects and diagnosis of periodontal diseases. His collaborative research efforts over the last years have resulted in numerous publications on periodontal microbiology, guided bone regeneration around implants, periimplantitis and the association between periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases.
