Description Despite major advances in the treatment of headache, many challenges remain, even for the neurologist and headache specialist. The inaugural CME meeting of the Southern Headache Society (SHS), Challenges in Headache Medicine, will address the clinical challenges that confront clinicians who see patients with headache. The advanced curriculum is intended for participants who have significant knowledge of headache diagnosis and treatment, and are seeking an expert s level of knowledge. Topics such as medication overuse headache, post-traumatic headache, hormonal issues in headache, and the use of opiates will be addressed. As the first meeting of SHS, the meeting will be led by faculty comprised of recognized leaders of headache medicine in the South. The meeting is designed to maximize interaction of colleagues, both by allowing dialogue at the end of lectures, and by providing small group workshops. Objectives Upon completion of this conference, participants will be able to: Review broadly the major clinical challenges in caring for patients with headache, and suggested directions for the future Review treatment approaches for, and evidence-based treatment of, medication overuse headache Promote an evidence-based approach to the use of neurotoxins in the management of headache disorders Improve the use of, and reduce the risk of, hormonal therapies for women with migraine Utilize practical tools for psychiatric screening of, and behavioral management of, patients with headache for clinicians who are not mental health specialists Evaluate and treat structural disorders of the jaw and neck, as they relate to headache management Discuss where evidence-based medicine may be inadequate for the treatment of common challenges in headache medicine, such as the use of opiates in the chronic management of headache disorders

3 Credit Continuing Medical Education Accreditation: The Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) is accredited by the North Carolina Medical Society to sponsor continuing education for physicians. Credit: MAHEC designates this live activity for a maximum of 11.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Psychologists MAHEC is recognized by the North Carolina Psychology Board as an approved provider of Category A Continuing Education for North Carolina Licensed Psychologists hours. Full attendance is required to receive credit from the Psychology Board.
