Here at American House, we carry on this great tradition every year, so please join us for our All-American celebration this Flag Day. Activities include: Flag raising ceremony and reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance - 11:45 a.m. An All-American cook-out: hot dogs, chips, hamburgers, baked beans and more. 2 2 Information Pedicures With Vickie A pedicure is a superficial cosmetic treatment of the feet and toenails. It provides a similar service to a manicure. Pedicures are done for cosmetic, therapeutic and medical purposes, and can help prevent nail diseases and nail disorders. Vickie from Hair Qtrs. will be doing pedicures in our beauty salon on Wednesday mornings for $40. 3 3 Hearing Loss: Early Treatment Improves Quality of Life An estimated 360 million adults and children worldwide have a hearing disability, according to the World Health Organization, with about a third of older adults experiencing disabling hearing loss. It s one of the top chronic public health challenges facing older adults reducing the ability to thrive physically, mentally, and socially but most hearing problems can be effectively treated with today s advanced hearing technology. In fact, early diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss can go a long way in improving quality of life, helping patients live better by hearing their best. Untreated hearing loss can permanently impact physical, mental, and social wellness, making early identification and treatment an important part of overall health. An Audiologist from Audicare Hearing Centers will be here on June 21 at 1:00 p.m., to conduct hearing tests and replace hearing aid batteries. 5 6 June Is National Safety Month On June 28 at 2:30 p.m. Nurse Cindy from Comfort Keepers will give us some Summer Safety Tips. Injuries are a leading cause of disability for people of all ages - and they are the leading cause of death for Americans ages 1 to 44. But there are many things people can do to stay safe and prevent injuries. We can all use this month to raise awareness about important safety issues like: * Medication safety and prescription painkiller abuse * Sun exposure, risk of dehydration * Preventing slips, trips, and falls Everyone can get involved in reducing the risk of injuries. Together, we can share information about steps people can take to protect themselves and others. Mother s Day Tea Great big smiles from one of our awesome volunteers, Marti, and her young guests. With 50 residents and guests it was a very lively group for Mother s Day Tea. Thank you to Anna K s daughter-in-law Esther for entertaining us on the piano.

6 7 Heart Disease Prevention By: Brian Rosso, R.D. This month I am writing about living a heart-healthy lifestyle. I hope you find the information below helpful in your everyday lives. Visit your doctor on a regular basis. Monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Maintain a healthy weight. Keep your body mass index (BMI) level under 25. BMI levels above 25 are associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease. Your BMI level is determined by using a formula that includes a person s weight and height. Here is a list of heart-healthy foods: salmon, oatmeal, tuna, carrots, spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes, asparagus, oranges, tomatoes, cantaloupe, and tea. All of these foods can be found on the menu at American House. Limit your salt and saturated fat intake. American House offers many heart-healthy food choices on our menu; just look for the picture of the heart. Stay active. Try to do some form of physical activity 30 minutes every day. This is also a great way to manage stress! American House offers many ways to live a heart-healthy lifestyle. You Have a Choice! There are at least eight different hospice organizations serving Northern Michigan. They include for-profit and non-profit hospices. This includes hospices that are affiliated with major companies outside the area, and those that are independently managed right here in our own community. The number and variety of hospice options is a testament to how important hospice care can be to those in need. Even though we may not want to think about end-of-life issues, it s great to know that we have a choice in hospice care, and we should choose wisely, just as we would choose the best possible family physician, or the best possible specialist in the event of an illness. Join Amy Wieland of Hospice of Northwest Michigan at 3:00 p.m. on June 11 as she discusses Hospice Care, what is available though her non-profit organization and answers questions regarding end of life care. Hospice of Northwest Michigan provides comprehensive physical, emotional and spiritual care to individuals and their families during and following life limiting illness. Taking a Look Back With Sue NEW GROUP - Taking a Look Back with Sue. In the group, residents will be taking a look back at all they have accomplished over the years. The group will run for four weeks, with each week focusing on a different segment of life. Sign up with Sue Goss in the assistant s office.
