February The Rotary Club of Flemington Inc. Club Number Chartered 29 April 1987 February is Peace & Conflict Resolution Month in Rotary I VALE Audrey June Seddon It is with deep sadness that I advise of the passing of Len s wife of 61 years, his beloved Audrey. Audrey passed away in the early hours of the morning on February 17th at the nursing home where she has resided for the past year. On behalf of President Sam Nicol and the Board, I extend our condolences to Len. Funeral information will be communicated at a later date. Audrey and Len with their congratulatory card from the Queen on their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Audrey at the Fit4Use Store Opening Day.

Meeting Minutes Wednesday February 14th Sergeant Alan Bruno had a hard time organizing members this morning; there was a great deal of chatter and animated conversations as everyone caught up with what had been going on, committee members updated each other on their projects and we welcomed back people from extended holidays. The early start is still catching some out but President Sam finally took the podium at 7.45am. He advised that apologies had been received from Del King who is ill in hospital, Rob Lawrence who is eating Sukiyaki in snowy Japan, Anne Heyes had family commitments and Cody Bettann had work commitments. He then welcomed Fabiola Pantea who is being inducted today and Wayne Berry, an accountant. President Sam then reminded everyone of the following: 1. Saturday 24th February is the Open Day at Donations in Kind and our club is running the BBQ. Please let Allan know if you can assist. All members are encouraged to visit during the day just to see exactly how the new shed looks, the major improvements and the vast quantity and range of goods available for projects. 2. Rotary Club of West Footscray is celebrating their 40th anniversary with an event at the Royal Yacht Club in Williamstown on Saturday night 24th February. He and Lesley are attending. If you are interested please let Sam know. 3. The Women in Rotary, International Women's Day breakfast is Wednesday 7th at Palladium at Crown. Lesley, Beate and Anne M are attending. If you would like to join them, please let Lesley know. 4. Moonee Valley Council IWD breakfast Thursday 8th. The club is again sponsoring a table and Sam, Allan, Lyn and Anne M will represent our club. Both MAC and Kensington CHS have been invited to join us. 5. There are very few places remaining for the District Conference at Warrnambool. Sam and Del are attending If you wish to attend, please register asap. Peter Cribb wll be there on the Saturday promoting the Slides to Sri Lanka project. 6. Board Meeting next Tuesday 20th February, 6pm at Lyn Borghouts home. Thank you Lyn. 7. Next week s meeting our Guest Speaker will be Jessica Lowry who was our sponsored representative at the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra in January. Jessica s older sister was also an NYSF student. 8. The meeting of Wednesday 28th February is at Mount Alexander College at the Breakfast Club. Allan Bruno advised that due to need, the Breakfast Club now operates every day and they have requested our help in obtaining plastic plates, as they are doing away with the paper plates. If you have any plastic plates spare, please bring along to the next meeting or to the Breakfast Club day. Allan Bruno then reported: The club provided the free sausage sizzle at Flemington Community Centre last Wednesday after school. Our club is running the BBQ at the DiK Open Day. Let me know if you can help. We have 2 Bunnings BBQs on the calendar in April at West Footscray and Maribyrnong. Jon Temby then reported on the Papua New Guinea Eco Tourism Project which he has been working on. Communication in that area is very difficult but negotiations and planning is progressing. This has potential for a Royce Abbey Scholarship proposal. More information as it is available.

Anne McMahon reported on the Flemington Arts Festival which will be held from 11th to 22nd October this year. She has had a number of meetings with representatives from various groups, including those at the Community Connects Forum. She is meeting with Flemington Traders, VRC, and Sebastian from MVCC Flemington Community Centre re sponsorship and grant applications. Anne needs a team to help her, please let her know what you can do. Anne will give a major presentation to members at the meeting on 14th. Peter Cribb reported on the Slides to Sri Lanka Project. He has had many discussions with PDG Neville John and the Rotary Club of Columbo in District PDG Neville John is supporting this as a District Endorsed Project and negotiations have resulted in agreement that all work and processing in Sri Lanka will be undertaken by Rotarians and the Sri Lankan Army. We have support from Paul Cotter of the Geelong City Council who will liaise with other councils, explain the process and provide examples of documentation. Approx. 15,000 playgrounds are dismantled across Victoria each year and cannot be reinstalled due to Australian Standards. Peter is looking for members who are interested in working on the team, to liaise with Rotary clubs and Councils in organizing playgrounds which are to be removed to be donated to us for shipping. All work will be by phone or , no running around or physical work. Peter will be at the District Conference t promote the project. Lesley advised that the 1,000 Stories Project is ramping up again due to a need. She had a call from Leone Dodds from MVCC who indicated that stocks were very low at all 3 centres. If any members have access to children's picture story books, please delver to Sam at the O Shop or bring to a meeting. President Sam then called Fabiola Pantea, and her sponsor Lyn Borghouts to the front. He then read the induction speech, and Lyn pinned the Rotary badge and Fabiola s name badge on. Members then welcomed Fabiola with the traditional handshake of friendship or hug. Sam then asked Paul Perrottet and Lesley McCarthy to join him at the front. Paul then announced that he had a special badge to present to Lesley, who is a member of the Paul Harris Society. He gave some background of the Paul Harris award and invited all those who were Paul Harris Fellows to stand. He also advised that a list of the PHF s was on the club website. He then explained that this badge, a 5 sapphire, the first time he has ever seen one, was indication of an $A6000 donation to the Foundation. He then pinned this badge on Lesley and congratulated her. Allan Bruno drew the raffle with several prizes today, some pink for Valentines Day.

Club Forum President Sam started off with the first item on the agenda. Meeting venue. Jon Temby - fortnightly at quest and alternate at other venues. Peter Cribb - fortnightly allowing for committee meetings on alternate weeks. Len Seddon- is it going to be a problem with consistency Fabiola Pantea - Could we trial alternate venues? Paul Perrottet - is the issue about cost or location? If it is a trial we need to show increased attendance as a success criteria. Allan Bruno has attended a great many Rotary meetings over the years and this venue is very good, with meal comparable to what is served at other clubs. Geoff Cawsey will Quest be willing to give us the same deal if we are not here every week? Beate McManus - do we need to meet weekly, fortnightly is my suggestion Peter Donnellan - agree that consistency is important Anne McMahon - cost is an issue for many people, could we trial fortnightly and some alternate locations Jon - move 6 month trial of forrnightly meetings Allan Bruno - I like the weekly meetings for the company but supportive of fortnightly meetings. An issue with alternate venue is it may not have better food, parking or space. Geoff - Probus comparison, we meet monthly but have activities or events more frequently. Lyn Borghouts weekly meetings allow us all to find out what is going on, who needs help with what and what events are coming up. Costs The $20 breakfast fee plus raffle and Sergeants fines are an issue for many people at 4 meetings a month. In reality, the breakfast cost is for venue hire. Raffle and Sergeants fines have subsidized this cost for a long time. Peter Cribb believes that the raffle and fines should be donated to a cause related to the Rotary monthly theme not used as a subsidy. Lesley Continental breakfast should be at a lower cost. Len Seddon if we are having fewer meetings, that helps with costs. Perhaps the meeting cost should be covered by the Club, fundraising not just to put money in the bank. Sergeants Session and Raffle Allan Bruno do away with raffle and Sergeants session, takes up too much time. Paul Perrottet the purpose of the Sergeant is to help the President run the meeting, and a dedicated sergeant will spend some time preparing for a meeting so as to fine members for appropriate and interesting events and occurrences, not just footy team or no badges. If the Sergeants session is a fundraising objective, people contribute what they can, no expectation. General Peter Cribb we need to focus on service, thank people for their service and encourage others to explore projects Jon Temby more projects encouraged and facilitated by the board. Allan Bruno unless more people are willing to take on roles and responsibility for running the club and projects, we are going to be in trouble. Peter Cribb we need to extend the survey to cover more areas, and gain input to the nature and activities of the club. Sam then advised that the Board would consider all comments at the meeting next Tuesday.

Chris Drenen now a Warragul Rotarian Hi Lesley, On 6 February 2018 I joined Warragul Rotary so my Rotary journey continues. Rosemary and I have been made very welcome by the Club but it helped knowing a few members including immediate past president Peter Dell for 30+ years! In the photo below is President Vaughan Fox and President Elect Ross Dawson. Also in attendance was District Governor Elect Janne Speirs whom we have been great friends with for many years (her husband Charlie was DG at the same time as PDG Murray). Not surprisingly I have been appointed to the Youth Services Committee of the Club. And yes, Warragul Rotary is very involved in youth exchange (and has been for 50+ years) and is currently hosting Charlotte from Germany. DGE Janne invited me to join the D9820 Youth Exchange Committee, an invitation I readily accepted. My last meeting/function with Flemington Rotary was last year s changeover dinner and I did not have an opportunity to thank people or say goodbye. I would therefore like to thank a few people for my time at Flemington Rotary: Vance Hilton for proffering sagely advice whenever requested; Allan Bruno for always being there, especially when I needed assistance (and not just Rotary related); Peter Cribb for asking me to consider the President s role way back then; Anne Dynon for inviting me to a Club meeting; Ted Frank for making me feel very welcome at my first few meetings; PP Phil Templeton for inviting me to join the Club and for every Flemington Rotarian, past and present, for doing what you do service above self! Rosemary and I have settled into Warragul life very well. We love the spaciousness of our new house and yard; there is so much room after 9 years of terrace house and apartment living!
