STATION 1 - Types of Blood Vessels 1. Read the description of arteries, veins, and capillaries on the computer screen. Use the information to fill in your Notes for Station 1 2. Look at the different size tubes at your station. Use the tubes to answer the questions in the Activity section for Station 1.
STATION 2 - The Basics of Blood 1. Read the description of Plasma, Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, and Platelets on pages in the textbook. Use the information to fill in your Notes for Station Follow the procedure below to create a blood clot using the materials at the station. Then answer the questions in the Activity section for Station 2.
STATION 3 - Blood Type 1. Read the description of the different blood types on pages in the textbook. Use the information to fill in your Notes for Station Follow the procedure below using the materials at the station to determine which blood types can donate or receive blood from one another. Then answer the questions in the Activity section for Station 3.
STATION 4 - Blood Under the Microscope 1. Focus your microscope under low, then medium, then high power. 2. Once it is focused on high power, sketch what the blood cells you see look like in the Notes section for Station Answer the questions in the Activity section for Station 4.
Name: Date: Ms. Parsons / 5th Grade Science Blood & Blood Vessels Station Notes Activity 1 There are main types of blood 1. Which tube represents an artery? Why? : take blood from the heart to the body organs and tissues. The artery 2. Which tube represents a vein? Why? wall is so it can deal with the pressure of blood being pumped directly from the heart 3. Which tube represents a capillary? Why? are tiny vessels which form a network to take blood through organs and tissues. The capillary wall is very Color in the picture below using the crayons at the station. Pay attention to which parts should be red or blue. so oxygen, food, and carbon dioxide can pass through it. collect blood from the capillaries and the blood to the heart. The walls of the veins are because the blood is at a much pressure.
2 Blood is made up of 4 components: is made of 90 percent and 10 percent dissolved materials, such as sugar, fat, and protein. blood cells take up in the lungs and deliver it to cells elsewhere in the body. Red blood cells are produced in. A red blood cell is mostly made of, an iron-containing protein that gives the blood cells a red color. blood cells are the body s fighters. They are fewer in number and bigger than red blood cells. help form blood by sticking together at the site of the wound. They help produce, which forms a net of tiny fibers across the cut. 1. What do the white poker chips represent? 2. What do the red poker chips represent? 3. What does the coffee filter represent? 4. What starts the production of the substance the coffee filter represents? Use the crayons at the station to shade the red blood cells in the picture below red, and the platelets orange or brown.. Leave the white blood cells unshaded.
3 There are four types of blood:,,, and. Blood types are determined by markers on blood cells. For example, if you have type A blood, you have the marker. Your blood cells have proteins that will attack cells with foreign markers and make them clump together. For example, if you have blood type A, your blood has clumping proteins against cells with markers. Shade in the picture below using the crayons at the station to match the cups at the station: After following the procedure for the activity fill in the table below: Blood Type A B AB O Can donate blood to... Can receive blood from... 4 Name: 1. Describe the blood cells you see: 2. Do they look more like other human cells or bacteria cells? Why? Total Magnification:
