1 AP Biology Summer Assignment Due date: Week of September 8, Purpose: The following chapters are mostly review from PreAP biology. Completing this assignment during the summer prior to the school year will allow the AP biology class to move through basic materials at a faster pace. You will be expected to understand the following chapters well enough to complete an assessment in the 2 nd week of school (9/4/17-9/8/17). We will be covering the chapters 3-6 very quickly within the first 2 weeks of school. Chapter 1 and 2 do not have concept questions within this packet, but you should be familiar with the material in those chapters also. These questions will be collected at the end of the second week of school. You have two options to complete the assignment during the summer session before the school year: Option 1 Check out an AP biology book during the summer.. You can keep the book for the coming year. You will be getting access to the online textbook at the start of the school year. Ask for Kate Bauer in the front office between June 20-22, from 8:30am to 4:00pm Mrs. Bauer s office at new Timmerman School (412 Swenson Farms Rd, Pflugerville, 78660) Option 2 Use the class web site to access the class note power points. The power points are summaries of the chapters that we will cover in class. They are NOT comprehensive of all details and examples that are in the textbook, but will suffice to explain the basic concepts. You may need to use the internet to help fill in some of the details. 3 Chap 3: Water Chap 3 What are polar molecules? What are polar covalent bonds? Know how polar covalent bonds help water be the universal solvent. What are the four emergent properties of water? Know the difference between cohesion and adhesion. How does water s high specific heat help regulate temperature (on organismal and ecological scale)? Why does ice float on liquid water? What is the difference between hydrophobic and hydrophilic? Know: solvent, solute and solution. What is the difference between acids and bases? (what concentration is tracked?) Be able to calculate concentration from ph and vice versa. What is a buffer? How does it work? How does acidification of the environment change things?
4 Chap 4: Carbon and Molecular Diversity Chap 4 What does organic mean? What did the Miller Urey experiment show? (Eventually we will tie this in to chap 25) What is the role of hydrocarbons? Know the functional groups for biological chemistry (pg 64-65) Chap 5: Biomolecules Chap 5 What are monomers? Polymers? What process builds polymers? What process breaks down polymers? What are the four groups of carbon compounds? Know which groups have a monomer/polymer structure and which one does not. What are the roles of carbohydrates in biological systems? Know the bond type that attaches monosaccharides to make a polysaccharide. Know the difference between and glucose polysaccharides. What is a starch? (Ex: cellulose, glycogen, chitin)
5 What are the main roles of lipids? Know the difference between saturated and unsaturated fats. What is a phospholipid? Where is it used in a cell? What are steroids? (Ex: Testosterone, Estrogen, Cholesterol) What are the 8 roles of proteins? How many amino acids are there? What do they make? What is a catalyst? What is an enzyme? What are the bonds called in a polypeptide? Know the 4 levels of protein structure. What are the main roles of nucleic acids? What do you call the bonds that attach nucleotides together? What are the five nucleotides? Which ones are used in DNA? Which ones are used in RNA? What does antiparallel mean?
