2 AP FRENCH HONORS WLA Knwing hw, when and why t say what t whm. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE In an increasingly interdependent wrld, teachers, schl administratrs and curriculum supervisrs must cperate in preparing students fr wrld citizenship. The ability t cmmunicate in languages ther than English is an imprtant cmpnent f glbal perspective. Fstering that ability is the special respnsibility f wrld language teachers. Cmmunicatin skills in a language ther than English prvide direct access t the minds and spirits f the peples f the wrld. The Wrld Language Department f Parsippany-Try Hills believes that secnd language prficiency is an imprtant cmpnent in the educatin f tday s students as they prepare fr a prductive and rewarding life. it is the ability t cmmunicate in meaningful and apprpriate ways with users f ther languages that is the ultimate gal f tday s wrld language classrm. In additin t the practical applicatin f cmmunicatin skills, the benefits derived frm the study f a secnd language are many and cntribute t the attainment f ur gals fr elementary and secndary educatin by: fstering a sense f humanity and friendship increasing a student s adaptability t different envirnments and mdes f acting and thinking furnishing the keys t thinking patterns, cultures, and scial institutins f ther peples giving insights int the human mind and language itself preparing students fr a wrld in which natins and peples will be increasingly interdependent develping skills and habits that are inherent in the learning prcess and that result in creative inquiry and critical thinking helping students t be empathetic by increasing their sensitivity t and understanding f the language, values, custms, and traditins f thers and by leading them t discver and examine their wn persnal values prviding insights int ur value system and an appreciatin f ur civic duties and respnsibilities being an additinal asset t prfessinal advancement.

3 AP FRENCH HONORS WLA R A T I O N A L E The Wrld Language Prgram f Parsippany-Try Hills is a sequential K-12 prgram is based upn specific prficiencies that were identified as a result f a natinal mvement that, in turn, became the basis fr the Prficiencies and Standards agreed upn by the State f New Jersey. It is t be nted, hwever, that these prficiencies shuld nt be thught f as accmplishments f distinct pints f grammar r vcabulary, but as tasks that the students can d in the language. These tasks, in turn, becme the fundatin upn which we use ur scpe and sequence f instructin. The assessment criteria used by the instructrs, hwever, are nt viewed as hierarchical. The same tpic can usually be explred at virtually any level f prficiency in a spiraling fashin. Fr example, the tpic f the family can be discussed differently at varius levels f prficiencies. Beginning students might be able t enumerate the members f their families but say very little else abut them. In the next plateau, the student might give a brief descriptin f family members r mentin sme f their activities r interests, whereas speakers at an even higher level can talk abut their family members in detail, recunt events that the family shared tgether, r talk abut future plans. At an even mre advanced level, mre abstract tpics such as scietal frces that threaten family life, the daily interactins surrunding family issues, r the rle f the family in the target language might be discussed. Thus, the depth and breadth f the discussin and the precisin and sphisticatin with which it is handled will differ frm ne level f prficiency t the next. We are indebted t the American Cuncil f Teaching f Freign Languages, the New Jersey Wrld Languages Curriculum Framewrk and the State f New Jersey Cre Curriculum Cntent Standards upn which we have based ur expectatins. Students begin their study f French in sixth grade and may cntinue thrugh Grade 12. A student may chse t select anther language f study at ne entry pint: Grade 9. The length f study is determined by student interest, career chices, high schl graduatin, cllege entrance requirements and achieved prficiency.

4 AP FRENCH HONORS WLA GENERAL GOALS The curriculum fr AP Spanish Hnrs Wrld Language is divided int instructinal units, with recycling themes based n the levels f prficiency and mdes f cmmunicatin and designed fr students in grades 11 r 12. These prficiencies have as their underpinnings the Prficiencies fr Wrld Language, set ut in the new Jersey State Department f Educatin dcument New Jersey Wrld Languages Curriculum Framewrk (Winter 1999). The curriculum is geared tward the levels f prficiency thrugh the Interpersnal, Interpretive, and Presentatinal mdes f cmmunicatin. Cnsideratin has been given t the Natinal Standards set frth by the American Cuncil fr the Teaching f Freign Languages. The underlying standard fr this curriculum is Standard Wrld Languages All students will be able t use a wrld language in additin t English t engage in meaningful cnversatin, t understand and interpret spken and written language, and t present infrmatin, cncepts, and ideas, while als gaining an understanding f the perspectives f ther cultures. Thrugh language study, they will make cnnectins with ther cntent areas, cmpare the language and culture studied with their wn, and participate in hme and glbal cmmunities. Cnsistent with the recmmendatins f the Wrld Languages Curriculum Framewrk, rather than each step in the language curse having grammatical structures as its fcus, there is an emphasis n increasing prficiency in cmmunicatin n a variety f every-day tpics relevant t the student. Als fstered, thrugh an increased use f authentic materials such as magazines, travel schedules, menus, advertising cpy, etc., are an awareness and knwledge f the culture f cuntries where the target languages are spken. Students learn t engage in a tw-way cmmunicatin in each tpic area, asking and respnding t questins, making cmments and expressing feelings, using given vcabulary and phrase. They als learn such underlying grammatical features and structures that are necessary t make pssible develpmentally accurate riginal cmments within the tpic area. Built int each unit is an attentin t a relevant bdy f cgnates in the tpic area, s that students acquire a great deal f significant, immediately usable vcabulary withut the effrt f memrizatin. Each unit will invlve all mdes f cmmunicatin. In additin, each unit will take int accunt special days in the natinal calendar f the target cultures. The units will be designed, adapted r expanded t reflect integrated themes in ther cntent areas such as Language Arts, Science and Scial Studies, Math and the Perfrming Arts s that students will have the vcabulary t discuss these tpics in the target language.

5 AP FRENCH HONORS WLA T H E L I V I N G C U R R I C U L U M Curriculum guides are designed t be wrking dcuments. Teachers are encuraged t make ntes in the margins. Written cmments can serve as the basis fr future revisins. In additin, the teachers and administratrs are invited t discuss elements f the guides as implemented in the classrm and t wrk cllabratively t develp recmmendatins fr curriculum refrms as needed. A F F I R M A T I V E A C T I O N During the develpment f this curse f study, particular attentin was paid t material, which might discriminate n the basis f sex, race, religin, natinal rigin, r creed. Every effrt has been made t uphld bth the letter and spirit f affirmative actin mandates as applied t the cntent, the texts and the instructin inherent in this curse. MODIFICATIONS AND ADAPTATIONS Fr guidelines n hw t mdify and adapt curricula t best meet the needs f all students, instructinal staff shuld refer t the Curriculum Mdificatins and Adaptatins included as an Appendix in this curriculum.
